I have a modded ps1 and a bunch of blank cds.

What are some games that benefit more from being played on a real hardware and CRT tv than emulated? I played most of the ps1 classics but still feel free to suggest all kinds of stuff. I have next few days off and could really go for some ps1 vidya.

Too bad that dank shell is all scratched up, I'd still buy it for 4.99

Depends on the hardware you're using
if you're going all out with a high quality CRT, stereo receiver with some nice headphones/speakers or just standard stuff
honest most 2d stuff looks pretty amazing either way
>>
Lightgun games?
Mednafen is pretty advanced as far as fifth generation emulators go. It's not like you can't emulate to with a CRT either.

Other thread about carrying the actual device made me wonder-- did it have any good games for me to emulate?
I use linux, but I also have wine, so if there's a "best" w/r/t emulation, let me know.
Best games?
You helped me learn Game Gear is good, let's hope for a repeat.

The state of emulation is pretty poor. Thankfully the hardware and software is overlooked and cheap for the time being.
>>

I'm curious too. I've looked lightly Ito the Lynx library on several occasions, and nothing ever really appeals to me. It was much easier for me to get into the Game Gear, which has a lot of good games.

What are some good games where you fly forward and you shoot enemies in front of you?
Especially those ones, which where made for the 2D hardware.

Space Harrier 2.

There is After Burner and G-Loc, I think one of the Gradius games had it as a bonus stage. I believe there is also Panorama Cotton but you are a flying girl there.

Yes yes yes!!!
I found it 2 years ago on an old harddrive and played it from time to time. I thought nearly nobody knew it

Yeah it's awesome. Try aleste and other compile games if you like it.

I loved it when I was a kid, but then I started playing arcade shmups, and I realized it's just euroshmup trash (euroshmup being a genre defined by health bars, shops, and inertia, nothing to do with country of origin).

So, I got a pic related at long last (I basically skipped that entire generation of consoles) and I'm wondering what I should play. I've already got Parasite Eve and Wild 9, and I have a stack of 99 Taiyo Yuden CD-R's ready to burn. It's been modchipped. I've only got 99 because I was missing disc 2 of parasite eve.

Besides the obvious "Symphony of the Night" and "Final Fantasy 7" and maybe "Tomb Raider II", which games should I play? What are your favorites?

Threads like these are never really useful, because the only replies you'll get are indiscriminate lists of AAA titles, without any explanation as to why those particular games are recommended, or what they're even about.

>What should I play?

You should have asked, "WHY should I play your recommended games? Tell me more about them."

If you could drink his name you would get drunk, hes young but not a punk. The continents at war but it no one can beat him to the floor. His armor is perfect white and he will always do what is right.

Pick a ruler theres more than one, to rule the continent make your army stong. Fight like a dragon its the only way to defeat the evil within.

Think about one of your favorite games.
Got one? Good.
Now name something(s) you don't like about it.

I'll start:
I have been replaying pic related lately and I'm having trouble understanding the reason behind the game having your allies being controlled by AI after you start the final chapter. For most part this isn't a big problem as the AI is actually pretty good and fights just as you'd do but after learning certain spells the spell casters go full retard and do nothing but cast useless spells over and over again. Obviously the best example of this is Cristo a character with good stats, equipment and healing magic casting BEAT over and over again when it will never ever hit anything.

That's why you play the DS remake, anon

Though frankly it's my least favorite out of the DQs I've played anyway (1,3,4,5)

Contra Hard Corps

The Jungle stage. The boss of it is long and tedious, and there isn't much you can do to speed up parts of the battle because he's not damagable while moving to the next phase.

On top of that, in a game that has branched paths, it is one of the few stages you MUST play through each time, unless you take the secret ending in stage 3.

Hey /vr/

I want to build a retro gaming pc but the lowest machine I have is a 900mhz pc. I was thinking of installing freedos on it but am unsure if I will run into compatibility issues. I'm worried that I won't be able to play older games cause the cpu is too fast.

Anyone have success building a retro gaming pc ?

I'm not sure but dosbox runs fine on my 3.7 quad core. can you not undervolt and slow the clock speed on old machines?
>>
>>2934420
There are CPU throttling utilities like MoSlo (and many others) that you can use for games that require it. Games that were written using Turbo Pascal (Jazz Jackrabbit 1 and Chasm: The Rift come to mind) refuse to run on machines over 200MHz, but Borland issued a patch that you can use to fix that. Its called TPPATCH.EXE.

How old of games (or what kind) of games are we talking?

Also, specific specs?

Maintaining DOS systems used to be somewhat of a hobby of mine, and I still dabble from time to time.
>>
>>2934420
Yeah, I put together a PII400 a few years ago. IDE hard drive, genuine SB16, DOS 6.22 not Windows, the real deal.

Every time I use it I spend more time fucking around with configsys/autoexec and what combination of TSRs works with what game, than actually playing the game I want to play. Sound quality sucks because that delicious OPL3 is hidden behind a cheap shitty op-amp.

The most important thing this taught me was just how fucking great DOSBox really is.
