FFT is my second favorite strategy game on consoles, and my favorite SRPG with grid-based combat.

The only game that I prefer over it is pic-related. It plays very differently though.

What do you guys do when the rubber domes in your controllers start to disintegrate? The rubber cups in my old Saturn controller are getting really bad, mostly in the D-pad. Pressing on it feels really squishy and just unpleasant. Are there known substitutes or am I stuck buying another controller that will probably have the same problem?

Nope. No one has ever bothered to make replacements. Try buying a third party controller?

I see some Ys threads once in a while but never a Xak thread. Does anyone played all of them? Do you think it is better than Ys?

Only played Xak 1 and 2 for the PCE-CD so far.
Pushing monsters into walls was kind of fun but the balance was off. The platforming in 2 was annoying.

Ha, I think there can only be a handful of ultra DIE-HARD Xak fans that consider the series better than Ys.

I've played all the PCE releases of the Xak games (only barely 3; I only just started). And while there are certain things I like, they have their share of problems.

As the other anon says, the balance in Xak 1&2 is really off - it lurches between "everything fucks you in one hit" to "you're an unstoppable badass." The PCE port fucks up the MSX originals by forcing you to grind to hurt some bosses (who won't take damage unless you are a certain level). The downside is that by doing this grinding it trivializes the rest of the game, to the extent that the final boss dies instantly. And so does the Xak II's final boss.

The combat revolves around pinning enemies against walls and watching their health bars deplete. It's kinda fun and satisfying, but I don't think it's what the developers intended. It's a weird take on the Ys bump system where... you just hold a button to bump into things.

The platforming is also a lame inclusion because it is so fucking easy to die in Xak II, because the platforming segment(s?) use wonky perspective to make it difficult to judge where to jump. Fail? Hope you saved right next to the area to try again!

Then again, I don't know if the PCE port was handled by Micro Cabin or Telenet (the kings of garbage).

Fray in Magical Adventure is actually my favorite thus far, despite being incredibly easy. It at least feels like it was balanced around being an easy spinoff game. It was also developed/published by Micro Cabin themselves, which may have something to do with it. It's colorful, has variety, and is a pleasant playthrough - I hear the PC versions are different and likely worth trying.

All that being said, there's quite a bit I like about Xak I&II! The first moreso than the second, since that seems to have more creative locations and a quicker pace. As fast ARPGs go, I found them fun if flawed (in the case of the PCE versions).

Is the in game art more like >>3274258 or >>3274921 because the 90's anime style looks cool but the cover the OP post alone makes me want to try this series. Is there a suggested starting point.

Is it possible to create a device that would let you link handhelds remotely?

It would be dope to play online with people, I never get to use system link anymore.

Err... for the gameboy, there is a hardware mod that allows you to connect online to trade and battle for pokemon....
>>
I think you're only going to see support for it if through emulation
>>
>>3273717
Well, pokemon red and blue on the 3ds have added wireless functionality, were there that many gameboy games that even used the link cable? I remember playing pokemon and Yoshi cookie through it, what else was there?

I always liked Crash's sharp angular design.

Do you think Sony will try to bring Crash back from the dead this E3?

Seems like a good way to generate more empty hype after the tough act it has to follow from last year.

What will it take to make Crash work in the modern era?

If they can rape it with DLC and QTEs then of course they will.

honestly hope not. The games were shit back then and the 90's 'tude mascot is dead as fuck. Just a bunch of fags hoping their childhood furry interest can be validated at E3

Why are Doom1 maps so superior to Doom2?
Almost every map in the original Doom is a masterpiece, it still hasn't been beaten in my experience.

Holy fuck this game is hard. I only owned 1 and 3 as a kid, I played a bit of 2 at friend's houses and always struggled with it but just assumed the particular level I was playing was hard. But now that I'm playing it as an adult, I realize the game starts hard and gets harder. The first world is harder than any of the worlds in DKC and DKC3, and the bosses of each world always whoop my ass a few times before I figure them out. I can see why people think this game is the best in the series, I'm just not sure I agree. I enjoy a good challenge but this game is almost too much. DKC3 will always be my favorite I think. Maybe my opinion will change though, I only just got to Gloomy Gulch.

I played the first one a lot and loved it (back then).

How do 2 and 3 compare?
>>
>>3266238
Never played 3 but I thought 2 was better than 1.

I recently went back and played 1 though and it was god awful to play. I can ignore controls that feel pretty bad usually as I usually just get into a "it's 19xx and this is how things were" mindset but it just felt AWFUL

There's nothing wrong with Syphon Filter controls as long as you turn the invert aim off. They are pretty intuitive and respond well.

Not my personal favorite though

If you did not experience Ultima Online between the launch in late '97 until the birth of Trammel in 2000, then you missed out.

>truly no other MMORPGs available until like 1999 when Asheron's Call and Everquest came out
think about it - that means if you wanted an MMORPG experience, you pretty much had to play UO
>full loot PvP, and thieves that could actually steal things out of your pack
>player housing that could be looted entirely
I had a month's worth of gathering and hording looted in front of my eyes while I was dead.
Not long after...we did the looting.
>stepping out of town was extremely dangerous
>even in town you could be a victim of theft, deceit, or clever PKs
>thousands of people fighting for territory, monster loot, and just survival
>PvP wasn't just for fun, but a necessity to protect yourself, your friends, and your house
>there has not been true griefing in a video since then
it was without a doubt the most brutal MMO online experience that ever was.

But it was short lived. The developers realized that mindless PKing and griefing was actually hurting their player base, and they ended it with Trammel. RIP the golden age of online gaming.

the things you say weren't the things that made it great, but yeah... nothing comes close to it. I'm sure there were some more balanced communities out there than the one you describe, I used to play in a more balanced one (not official). Didn't play much though, any game that forces you to play non-stop is a no-no. I had friends that dropped out of uni for playing shit like that, even it was their fault and not the games, the premise remains: games that force you to play non-stop and forever to not stay behind eventually become shitholes.
>>
it took an expert to actually steal anything expensive from your pack. and we all trapped our bags and walked away from anyone standing close. also you revealed before entering house if you think someone is hiding to walk in your door.

people that talk about these points a lot are either underage and didn't play or perhaps was just really bad players and got tricked and pked a lot.

great game tho, it's how mmorpgs should still play today.
