I've heard that Super Mario Bros. 2 jp, AKA: The Lost Levels wasn't initially released outside Japan, because the publisher thought it was too hard.

Is this actually a true fact, or just speculation?

if I remember correctly it also had to do with how outdated the game looked by the time it would have been released in other regions. It was almost the same game as the first one visually and Nintendo thought that it wouldn't sell because of this.

So why was it much harder too?
>>
>>3281268
Because they wanted to use new gimmicks in the limited engine.

No Virtual Boy thread? Aww come on guys. Did anyone actually have one of these things when it came out? I didn't purchase one until ~2010 when I learned of it. I think this console (portable?) makes a great shelf piece, as many people don't know what it is. Especially when they hear that it was from Nintendo!

So, what are the best VB games?

Teleroboxer has the best virtual feel to it in my opinion. But looking past just "how good at a virtual feel it is", what games are good?

I found pic related in my games library.

I managed to unlock the secret stage after the first level but it's balls to the walls hard.

Can anyone give me some basic hints?

I equipped my ship to generate a wide bullet carpet to clear the screen but maybe that's a wrong approach?

Which secret level, Windy? There's like four for the first level. Bubbles is very easy, Holes has some tough spots and Windy and Soh Jinn are demanding.
Don't you normally exit the secret level upon getting killed in full mode?

Oh damn, didn't know there where more than one.

How do I find out what it's called? The map screen only says "unknown".
>>
>>3281015
I know the one you're talking about. It gets really hard close to the end with tons of shit everywhere. All I can say is, practice. Try some different tactics.
When that part first begins where it becomes bullet-hell and the screen is completely full of enemies I try to got left and right while dodging the bullets and killing as much as possible.
If you stay in just one spot you're going to get annihilated. Keep moving.

So can someone tell me how to git gud at this game?

Or do you really have to just keep grinding for hours at a time to get to the next boss?

Get the following abilities on every character:

>Squire: Move+1
>Chemist: Auto-Potion
Throw away all potions lower than the highest rank (Potion < High Potion < X-Potion)
>Chemist: Item
>Chemist: Throw Item

Congratulations. You've just set yourself up to be virtually unkillable, and in the event someone does die, you can easily ressurect them.

Pro-tips:
>Armor is grossly outclassed by clothing.
Armor sucks a big limp dick in this game. Clothing usually has useful statuses starting in Chapter 2. +1 PA, or +1 speed is well worth the -20 or so health.

>Keep Back up saves every time you're about to enter a castle

This is going to help later on as there are a handful of levels that are considered "ridiculous" and you get locked into a situation where you have to do the battle, and can't go shop or fight random battles.

>Don't bother mastering classes
It's not even close to required. Get enough JP on Archer and Thief to unlock Ninja, then dump them as they're garbage jobs.

I would just try and get enough JP to learn Move+2.

>Recruit all the special characters you get
Mustadio isn't particularly useful but having him in your roster is required for the sidequests.
>>
>>3280670
inclined to disagree about mustadio. later you can steal (or buy?) guns that shoot elements that do a lot of damage, and he can cripple enemies.

everything else he says is dead on, but i'd consider keeping a save file duplicate for ALL battles.

Just starting to get a decent start on an N64 collection and was wondering how you feel about replacing labels and such for personal collections.

I don't plan to resell or anything, but want to keep a consistent look to it. Thoughts? Or should I just put the effort into finding decent quality originals?

>>
If you just want to play some good games, just print out some new labels. If you're trying to build a beautiful 'collection', you probably don't want loose carts anyway. I just buy carts to play, so I typically buy the shittiest ones I can find and leave them as it, but that's just me.
>>
>>3280490
For personal collections you can do whatever the fuck you want, go ahead and print out shitting dick nipples and paste them on every cart i that makes you happy. I personally am more utilitarian though, if the game works and it is clearly marked I'm not too bothered.
>>
>>3280490
If it's for your personal collection why does it even matter what we think? Personally, if I ever have the money for an N64 I'm just going to get a flash cart, but if prices ever plummet and I find myself with N64 carts, I plan on getting end labels for them

>Michelangelo sporting his trademark o̶r̶a̶n̶g̶e yellow duds whilst performing a move that's sure to break even superhuman bones(he's is swinging from 6+ stories high- he's fucking dead!)

>April is an 80s tranny

>Shredder is a recovering cosplayer, tormented by visions of bizarre turtle-like green teenagers stalking his every move

>Raphael vies for "dumbest weapon form"- a title currently contested by Zoro(one piece) and Death the kid(Soul Eater)

So I recently picked up a PS from goodwill for $7, and I still play my old games from when I was a teenager, but for years I have played them on my PS2.
Is it actually worth me finding shelf space for this PS1 or is just playing them on my PS2 just as good?

>>
PS2 is the same thing. If you have an SCPH-90000 (slim with built in power) you can set fast disc mode and speed up loading, personally I think that feature alone makes it worth it. Plus you get a DVD player, all the PS2 games and the consoles are dirt cheap. That plus a modchip is godlike.

The original is only needed for a few games that don't run on PS2 (Tomba, FF Anthology, one of the Mortal Kombat games come to mind) or if you insist on nostalgia.
>>
>>3280312
All PS2s have fast disc mode.
>>
so I take it one of the reasons the PS never shot up in value was because there has been other ways to play its library, with little to no difference in game play.

Is there any reason why there are two difficulty options in Cadillacs & Dinosaurs? One has eight settings and the other has four. How do they work? Other Capcom games like Final Fight and Captain Commando had this shit too.

Maybe it's for the loop? Like, once you've beaten the final stage the game starts back at the first stage again. Maybe it's for that.

None of those games have multiple loops though. I remember one of the former Capcom designers said that one difficulty option affects "lucky patterns" and other is for "unlucky patterns", whatever that means.

Why do some HDTVS make noises when displaying scan lines? My UHDTV is changing pitch when I zoom in and out of scan line patterns. It seems also to be NES era specific problem as some games during that era use similar patterns for backgrounds or skies, so the tv is squeeking even when no crt shader is applied in those games. Is that why old tube tvs make those high pitched unbearable noises? Is it because of scan lines?

>old tube tvs make those high pitched unbearable noises
No, that was the flyback transformer. Has nothing to do with scanlines.
>>
>>3279776
I think noise is effected by contrast so if the screen is all white do you notice more noise?
>>
>>3279836
no, gone. only when white and black are really close to each other.

This might not be the correct board for this, and if it isn't I can delete the thread. I'm looking to emulate the appearance of n64- ps2 era graphics. I appreciate how you can tell the difference between ps1 and n64 games, and ps2 games and gamecube games for example. Each console had it's own visual charm. I want to understand the process that went into designing for each of these consoles so I can try and emulate some of the "looks" each console was known for. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful for that.

I had trouble formulating my thoughts, I want to emulate the look of some of the older consoles in terms of making 3d graphics. know each consoles look was dependent on a lot of factors, and I was hoping some people could help explain some of it. (types of hardware, certain tricks or techniques used, etx.)
