Agree it looks stupidly inconvenient. Even a lot of old cocktail cabs manage to fit most of the controls under the glass. You could have just copied one of those and had something that actually functions as a table.
To function as a coffee table it needs to be lower, which would put those controls on the ground. You need controls even with the top at the lowest. These should slide or fold out so the table can be used as a table.

This really is a weird design though, super narrow panel, ugly marble paper that clashes with the rest of the box, and also the speaker/bezel combine to look like a funny face.

But hey, he did it and it's his so I'm not the person to tell him he's wrong. Just curious choices here IMO.
