DKC: 9/10
DKC2: 10/10
DKC3: 7/10

What are your reasons for why DKC3 was so inferior?

For me:

>enemy design is uninspired and generic compared to the other two
>no real "theme" (no pirates)
>music isn't as good
>animal friends aren't as fun/useful

Two words: Kiddy Kong
>>
Kiddy Kong sucks mostly.

I honestly don't understand why people rank DKC1 higher than 3. 1 was fun and all, but very mediocre with repeating bosses and poor level design. 3 has the best bosses in the series and varied levels. People can say they're gimmicky, but this actually started in DKC2, where few levels didn't have their unique gimmicks. 2 is the best one, no doubt, but 3 is close behind. The atmosphere doesn't feel as exciting, though, and I think that has a lot to do with it. But it's undoubtedly better than 1, unless you hate Kiddy Kong so much that your entire view is skewed.

What are some games that could have been decent or good were it not for some key design flaws, making them unfair or frustrating to play?

Alternatively, what are some games that are good, but have extremely exploitable mechanics that make them too easy?

Post a game you believe fits either profile, and what you would fix about them. I'll start with a well-known game to kick us off.

FFVI is a pretty easy game from the get-go, but it becomes a total joke once you get the end-game equipment and spells. Atma Weapon+Offering obliterates everything, as does Ultima+Quick, not to mention the numerous exploits like Wind God Gau. Hell, Quick alone is almost impossible to balance from its design.

For starters, I would honestly remove Ultima and Quick, made it so Atma Weapon doesn't ignore the Offering damage debuff, and make the end-game monsters and bosses harder. Also make Magi Master not be vulnerable to Berzerk. He was supposed to be the game's super boss, kinda, after all.

Why doesn't Gorman do any research when making videogame comics?
He pretty blatantly doesn't play most of them but gets upset when people call him out on that.

You could easily make a funnier comic with Cyan tickling the train to death with a Fenix Down, since that's what a lot of people do.

Anybody else fan of the SMT series? Which one is your favourite though?

Will be online in like 3 hours to answer anything.
>>
Favorite retro is Soul Hackers followed by SMT 1.
>>
Innocent Sin because Steven Seagal, homoerotic sexual tension, gaijin integration, rumors and hipster literature references.

Too bad Eternal Punishment was kinda meh and more anime-like.

It looked interesting enough to try. I have it on my "to-do" list.

Totally agreed my friend, This and another I bought in the same night are what I consider my 'formative RPG"s.

I liked the simple yet different battle formula and most of the characters, the music really awesome as well, there's just a lot to like. It's been a long time since I played but I can still remember most of the big moments.

>>2807467
You could do a lot worse. So the game's rather linear, alright, I can deal.

Can /vr/ help me remember the name of a DOS first-person shooter from '94 or '95? The full game was never released for some reason. In the first level of the shareware version, you start off trapped in a prison cell with yellow, stone walls. If I remember correctly, you had to make a bunch of noise by smashing wooden barrels so that the guards would check on you and you could attack them. This is all I can remember right now. I know it's not much to go on.

By the way, pic unrelated. I thought the game was Strife. It's not Strife. But I do believe it has a one word title.

I guess I should also mention that the game combined sci-fi and fantasy elements. Like, your prison cell resembles a medieval dungeon. But the guards look like robots and fire plasma guns. I think there's magic involved, too.

Was it real time combat or turn based?

Can you remember who developed it or published it?

Thanks anon. I've been trying to remember what that game was for years now. Haven't touched it since I was super young.
>>
>released in early 1990

That shit is only a 90s game by the loosest of definitions.

Was the Sega Saturn really that amazing that it's worth getting even now, or was that just some old embellishment?

If it was, how can I tell if it is the original or "good" version? Is the box different?

Like with any other console, it's only worth getting if there's games on it that you want to play.

The reason it became so precious to modern collectors is because it was a relatively obscure console in the west that many people missed back in the day, which actually got good support in Japan, it's the PC Engine of the 5th gen.

I forgot to specify, I was talking about the controller

I often hear how it's one of the best
>>
>>2807092

Oh, yeah definitely, I can confirm that.
I think it's my favorite controller period. The size, the shape, the d-pad (best thing on it), the buttons, the shoulder buttons... it's perfect.

The model 2 or the japanese one is the way to go, the model 1 american/european model is different.

Mechwarrior 2 is one of my favorite games. I play it quite a bit.

Recently, I tried beating the game using only a Firemoth and no starmates. Some missions (like the fourteenth mission of the jade falcon campaign) were a real pain in the ass to get right, but it was a lot of fun. I'll never use a heavy again.

Right now, I'm trying to do the same thing on hard. It's going about as well so far, as I'm a lot better at using the Firemoth now than I was when I started.

GBL is, unfortunately, garbage. Mercenaries is fun but I can't seem to get it to work acceptably on my computer.

Nothing like cruising at 312kph in a MASCd out Firemoth.

I sleep with my Titanium Trilogy cds next to my bed. Honestly Mercs was and is my favourite game of all time. Ill leave the goddamn cave before the patrol passes if I please.

I bought Doom on Steam and it's cool and all but I have a really hard time with the controls. I'm using the default with WASD is U/D/L/R and the left and right arrow keys to turn. Shift is run and Ctrl is shoot, and that's a real problem for me because with WASD I can't shoot with my left hand, and it's hard to touch right Ctrl and maintain accuracy while turning with the arrow keys.

So how can I remap shoot to another button? Preferrably the Up arrow. With Steam I don't see how to do this since you click play and it launches right into the game and once it's going you can't change the controls. You can choose between Ultimate Doom controls and classic controls, but neither fix this problem since they both use Ctrl to shoot.

Play it with a source port, like GZDOOM, or Zandronum
zandronum.com
http://devbuilds.drdteam.org/gzdoom/
Just put the DOOM.WAD file from your steam version folder and put it in the same folder as the source port you're using
>>
>>2806385
Alternatively, if you want to enjoy Doom as close to the original as possible, you can try Chocolate Doom.
https://github.com/chocolate-doom/chocolate-doom

This source port has an easy to use setup tool right out of the box. Just pop in your DOOM,WAD and play.
>>
>>2806385
I have no idea what that means. I'm fine with running the Steam version, I just watch to change how to shoot. As you can tell I'm not very computer literate.

Not retro.
And I wouldn't call any King's Field or Souls game "lively", exactly.

At the end of stage fucking three the boss is impossible. If you get your arm torn off in the beginning, which is bound to happen 80% of the time, you can't hit him, as he just tears off your body.

Lagoon for snes. Fun game similar to Zelda. It came out early in the snes life so the graphics aren't the best for snes game, but not bad.

>>2804849
Fun game but yeah boss fights suck for the reason you stated though you can still attack without arm. You can rip arm off other borgs but not sure if you can remove torso too.
