David Brevik just released the Original Diablo Pitch Document from 1994:

I haven't played Diablo I, but the document states that they will sell expansion packs (mostly like Magic expansion decks). Was this a real thing?
>>
haha wow they really wanted some greedy pokemon type thing with gotta collect em all

Why is it that so many 8bit and 16bit era video games had timers even when they served no specific purpose?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Design taken from arcade games. Gotta keep those coins coming.

Even if the time limits are too generous to ever be a threat on consoles they still serve a purpose. They are just badly designed for that purpose.

The only scenario I completely agree with your thought is when console games put a time limit on things like character and stage select screens.
>>
>>3297123
most games on a timer gave you bonus score for extra time you had left.
>>
>>3297209
This.

Example: The original Castlevania.

Why dis so many Japanese games seem to be completely in English?

I got a Japanese copy of the original Wario Land today, all the options, level names, and everything else are in English. I've noticed it with a lot of games, it's always ones with hardly any text, but still, why produce the game in a foreign language? The only thing I can think of is to save on translations, but since Japan was the largest game market it seems odd to me they'd cater their games to other markets. Since there was so little text n those games would it really have cost much to translate it?

>>
>>3296239
Because Japan was not the largest market? The entirety of Americas and England's market (the largest English ones) alone is like 5 times Japan. Have you never looked up countries economies?
>>
English characters are more legible in lower resolutions plus they're considered stylish
>>
There are a couple of considerations:

1.) English slogans are trendy, and some basic English is taught in Japanese grade schools. I guess developers figure all-English menus might appear exotic? Or maybe they're just trying to exercise players' knowledge of the English language.

2.) "Gray imports." In other words, it made games more import-friendly. The country does get a lot of tourism.

No.

I think Italians did, because "Sega" in italian means masturbation, and australians, because they're retards.

No because I was privy to this gem of an ad.

Hey dudes, so I just go an Everdrive for my Gameboy.

What is everyone's favourite must have play game for the GB/GBC? I've already filled it with a couple of hundred roms but that's a bit overwhelming. Anything I should try to play first?

Yo, /vr/, I have a pretty specific problem.

See, I have really good intuition, generally regarding stuff like making fast calculations, logic problems and orientation in terrain.
The problem is, our education system (teachers being like "I don't care if the result is correct, you must prove how you got it or I will fail you") has made me supress it, so I subconciosuly try to ignore it at every step (and later get mad where it turns out my intuition was right all along and I just wasted time overthinking shit). I've been trying to get back to using it, and I thought of using games to train myself to use it again. I noticed games with complex levels and worlds make me use terrain orientation skills to imagine them in full - and it's much easier and faster than e.g. going hiking in the woods.

So, /vr/ - what are exploration-focused games with huge, complex worlds and levels that you recommend? Mind you, they need to not have any kind of in-game world maps (which is why I'm not asking /v/, since modern games handhold you so hard in that department - and besides, all I'd get in replies would be shitposts) because if I can just see where I am, it defeats the purpose - so most metroidvanias after Metroid 2 are pretty much useless for my purposes.

I'm currently playing through first Legend of Zelda and both Dooms (since you can ignore automap in them), I'm planning to also get on Wolf3D and first (and second) Metroid - but that is about as much of such games as I know.

Generally, I'm talking about the kind of games where it would be a good idea to use a graph paper for maps, stuff like that?

Duke Nukem 3D has some truly massive levels, with a good mix of complex indoor and outdoor environments and some decent puzzles. I'm pretty sure I figured out how to get into the submarine on luck alone.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but it's a game I can recommend regardless.

Sandopolis Act 1 is actually a good level.

Act 2 is boring, too much switch trickery, takes too long to go through, it's in general not really good.. what do you like about it, OP?
>>
>>3295180
Seems like people hate it because it's too maze-like, plus the ghosts (they're pretty easy to deal with, never understood the issue with them). I like maze-y, more intricate levels. Also ambientation is great, ramps up the difficulty. To me it maks the "Oh shit, real S&K starts now" moment.

About to play this for the first time. Which character should I pick?

Most everyone will tell you Claude. The stuff and characters you get due to him being the main character are better.
>>
>>3294787
I disagree. Claude might have the better unique story scenes, but he doesn't have the better extra character. Dias isn't better than Claude or Ashton, but he's better than Leon out of sheer virtue of being a KM user. Mages are only good up to a certain point, then KM users outdamage them by a ton. I like to keep one for interrupting across screen, but Celine's just as good of a choice for that imo.
>>
>>3294826
To be clear though, you'll have no problem beating the game with any combination of characters, especially on normal. I've done runs with every combination, and 2KM/mage/Rena into 3KM/Rena is just the optimal run. Definitely recommend it for Universe though.

I've been playing Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness on the SNES recently and it's a lot of fun even though I suck at it. Have been meaning to revisit Genghis Khan II recently as well.

What other historical sims have you enjoyed? I enjoy the macro-level stuff (esp. politics and the like) more than the actual combat, so if you could recommend games along those lines, please do.

Have you tried Cosmology of Kyoto? It's rather slow, but it is impressively atmospheric.

Also, while not retro, have you tried any of the Paradox Studios grand strategy games (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, etc.)?

What do you guys think of Chrono Cross?
Was it a worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger?
What were people's reaction to this game back int he day? It feels like such a distant sequel and sadly I somehow missed out on it back then so I'm curious what people though of it.

Why do devs do this?

Tomba had the same problem.
>>
>>3292547

The tech was new and console manufacturers were pushing it as a main selling point, practically(and in some cases literally) forcing developers to switch to 3D even if they didn't want to.

It worked for Mario 64 but most 2D games failed to translate well and live up to their predecessors.

There seems to be something very unique about a lot of sprite art for the earlier generations of gaming systems. They look very well done in ways that haven't really been replicated since.

Was wondering if anyone knew anything specific about sprite artists' processes back then. What did they do differently than people do today with all our conveniences? Are there well known sprite artists that designed for specific games? How come today's "pixel art" aesthetic rarely pays homage to the greats in this medium?

I know the excellent designer Kazuma Kaneko preferred spriting characters first before drawing them traditionally, before moving completely to digital media. I can't think of anyone else whose process I've heard about.

This.

Way back further, during the NES days, programmers used to have to manually put in the character art via code instead of just drawing it on-screen. Not sure when that changed.

But yeah, most "pixel-artistts" don't actually draw. They're not artists, they just go with what looks good enough.
