So to celebrate my new CRT VGA monitor, I decided to play some PC98 games. I installed Doukyusei and started playing for a while. It's pretty nice so far but I don't know if should be playing this or the Windows port.
Windows port butchers the art (like so many Japanese Windows ports) but seems to add some more things. Any input? Should I stick to the PC98 or bear with the Windows or any other version?
Which Windows port? There's several of them.
The recommended one is the DMM which is faithful to the PC98 original aside from offering multiple save spots and a map.
I don't think they butchered the art. They recolored the images instead of running them through a filter.

The first Windows port (the voiced one) butchered a lot of scenes and broke characters' personalities. It's about 75% as good as the original. If you want a voiced Doukyuusei, the Sega Saturn port is the best for that.
The DMM "Original Version" >>3300136 should be the same as the PC98 and DOS/V, just with recolored art, though I've not gotten around to playing it yet to confirm personally.

I had this game when I was a kid. I remember playing it all the time and just thinking it was the bee's knees. Recently I saw it at a garage sale and bought it for.75 centsturns out that the game is actually shit.
It's slow, has terrible slow down problems. The plot is generic and seemingly irrelevant. Music is mediocre at best. The combat is odd, enemies have weird hotboxes and it's just not a good game 5/10 at the very best.
I would argue it is not in the slightest underrated....

At has an extra processor, It's 12.5 mhz, the genesis is like 8mhz, so quite a bit more powerful.

I have a lot of money because I don't waste it on 400 dollar pieces of plastic with circuit boards in them from 1990. Same goes for these games. Metal Slug is 1300 dollars. Anyone who pays that is likely a poor person living in a 600 square foot apartment with a bad job.

When I finally decide to get one, I'll probably get which ever one has the highest compatibility. It'll probably be the most expensive option, but it's not like I can't afford it.
Get the cheapest clone like China ver everdrive works with pretty much all games (except DSP and SuperFX games) works fantastic.
Pic related is a solid option. It goes for 40 bucks on ali express. I've had mine for 3 weeks now and haven't found any compatibility issues that couldn't be fixed by a rom patch.
