How good are you at Puzzle Games
25 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
I'm decent at sliding puzzles but I utterly suck at Tetris and all its variants.
>>
Very bad.

I'm the opposite. Good at Tetris but can't do sliding puzzles, Sudoku or Rubik's cubes. Shit at Puyo Puyo too.

I barely played any video games before I got a PS2. Just a few computer games like Ski Free, Chips Challenge, and some arcade things if I went to the bowling alley.
Time to play some stuff that looks really interesting. I fell in love with this wallpaper and it turns out it's from a video game, but I'm looking for several games with either this style or this tone. Any recommendations? It doesn't have to be a good game, just have this night city setting.

I really, really love the original game. The famicom version specifically.

Huge nostalgia boner for it. I also love pretty much every other game in the series including the SFC platformer.
I never got into Stinger much though. It was pretty ignored when it came out in the US, I think. They should have released TwinBee 1 instead.

Anyone played TwinBee 3? I think it's the most underrated game in the series.

Also, TwinBee on 3DS is pretty cool. I'm glad they went for the Famicom version and not the arcade... I always thought the Famicom ver. was better looking and sounding than arcade original. Best thing about the 3DS version is that you can adjust the rapidfire turbo, and the 3DS circle pad is really fucking good for shooters. It's a shame the 3DS was not exploited with the genre, it's far better than using the d-pad or nub of the PSP. Anyway, I recommend the 3d classic version of TwinBee on 3DS to anyone. I remember I got it for free with the bonus nintendo points that came with my 3DS.
X68K version is pretty nice too. Basically a 16-bit version of TwinBee.

Twinbee 3 was my first twinbee game, and still one of my favorites. Definitely the best of the famicom trilogy, in my opinion. I have a lot of love for pop'n twinbee though, especially that stage 4 music.

Wowee look at that, I suddenly made the game actually fun to play with only 4 major changes, to bad Konami didn't figure this out during the testing phase.

How do you know when the piranha plants come up?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Two things
If you're near the tube, they won't come up again until you move 1 or 2 blocks away from the tube
And its probably 2 or 3 seconds, i don't remember, haven't played Super Mario Bros. since forever
>>
By not being a fucking retard
>>
It has to do with your current score. If the last digit in your score is a multiple of three, but the total score isn't divisible by the square root of 65535, then the piranha plant has only a 16/256 chance of emerging from the pipe.

To what extent does /vr/ import?

Does anyone else here ever import games that were otherwise released in your region, only because the import version is actually more affordable? I find myself doing this more and more lately. It doesn't frankly matter to me since I have some rudimentary understanding of Japanese, although less text-intensive games tend to be in English regardless of region.

not retro but shadow tower abyss is pritty gud
>>
For PCE and Sega Saturn, I mostly import because it's cheaper. Buying PCE has also got me to a play several Japanese language RPGs (action RPGs though) which I doubt I would have played otherwise. Stuff like Brandish, Popful Mail, and the like.

Often times buying western-released retro isn't worth it given price gouging, especially if games aren't text heavy to begin with.

Fan translation is better and you don't have to buy it at all.

Sorry for making another Saturn thread, I would've posted in one of those but they all consist of console-war shitflinging.

I'm about to buy my own Saturn, should I go for the Model 1 (oval buttons) or Model 2 (round buttons like picrelated)? I know the difference isn't as drastic between revisions compared to the Genesis, but I want to get the best I can for my money. More specifically, which model has the better laser to read burnt CD-Rs?

>I know the difference isn't as drastic between revisions compared to the Genesis

this is where you are wrong, the model 2 is a cut-down Chinese made cheap piece of shit. go for the model 1.
>>
>>3303412
>More specifically, which model has the better laser to read burnt CD-Rs?

If that's your main concern, model 2s have been released later, so they have the least beat up lenses.

There isn't really a big difference between the two though.

model 1 actually are more prone to damage due to internal capacitors leakage, doesn't happen with model 2.

Sega makes me want to puke.

Ugh, fuck.

How is it that people have working 3DOs, Saturns and other early optical media consoles? Shouldn't the optical units be burned out by now? And how are the games even in working condition decades later? Optical media is very prone to oxidation. Although the quality of the media plays a large role in this, I can't imagine discs manufactured so long ago will continue to hold up for much longer. (Come to think of it, shouldn't audio CDs from the early '90s also be suffering from degradation by now?)

The lasers can go kaput but as long as optical drives are still manufactured (and they aren't likely to go away for a long time) you will be able to replace your drive mech.
>>
>>3303143
Because Saturn has a great optical drive compared to the shitty PSX.
>>
>t. someone with no vintage cd hardware

I'm a little suspicious this might be bait though due to specifically mentioning disc formats that do have notable oxidation.

Why is this game so highly regarded? It was just a The Great Escape clone. A great one sure, but it's not like it invented the wheel or something.
>>
>>3302464
Actually it is quite open for its time. It brings together elements from rpgs and point & click together.
>>
>>3302473
Just like The Great Escape. But don't mind me, I'm a Spaniard myself and I actually like the game. I guess I'm just tired of underages talking about La abadía del crimen like it was some sort of revolutionary holy grail that put all the other software from that era to shame.

ITT: Games that only sucked because of a few flaws

There are bad games that cannot be redeemed at all, and then there are games that only sucked because of a few flaws. Let us discuss those games. I'll start:

The Adventures of Dr. Franken. I love many things about this game like the art style, the enemy design, and the funky music. But they screwed it up by:

>making Dr. Franken move too fast
>the fucked up controls
>some of the level designs sucked

If not for this, it would probably have been a pretty good game.

If there was a limit in the agree-o-meter, i would reach that limit
>Multiple characters, each one has their own loadout of weapons
>You can either bro-op or call for 10 seconds a CPU player to help you, which has a fuckton of commands to go by, like he would cover you from behind or go foward
>Music was as excellent as other contra titles [ So excellent, a piece of it made it to Contra Rebirth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJFR3s2LweI ]
>Had a mix of side scroller and top-down levels, as fun as Super C or Operation C's top down levels
>Gradius-like upgrade progression, which was cool.
>FUCKING SLOW DOWN RUINS THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME.
Seriously, i played this game a lot of times and i can say that if the fucking slowdown wasn't there, the game could've been on the same tier as The alien wars or Hard Corps

Why is it so ridiculously rare and expensive?

The character has a cool interesting concept and the PSX game is great, but was that just it.
