HOLY FUCK

Why is this games interface so terrible?

Early full-3D before everyone knew what they were doing. Before this there was Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 I think, other than that I can't think of any other full 3D FPS type games before this. Quake, Unreal, Duke3D, those all came out two years later or longer. Heretic is close, it came out the same year, but it was more of a direct FPS than FPS/RPG hybrid.

Because back in the day good interfaces were not discovered yet.

We saw Mega Man without his helmet many times. How come we didn't see the same with X?

What do you think he looks like without a helmet?

It's bloody marvelous.

The Atari 2600 is 8-bit.

And we actually have an 8-bit Ecco game.

What are some comfy easygoing NES games?

To me Kirby's Adventure will always be the definitive comfy NES game. Nothing else comes close.

GRADING.jpg

What would /vr/ think of a unified grading system for retro games? Perhaps something like what coin collectors currently have.

I'm sick and tired of seeing shopkeepers trying to sell games with obvious defects for full price. This is just another facet of the growing price inflation problem that we see, and I think some kind of system could help curb that problem. Eventually, a unified system could be expanded to things like consoles and controllers.

Now the argument could be made that all that matters is the game itself, and while I would disagree with that as an absolute statement, the working condition of the cartridge should have a higher impact on the grading.

What kind of categories would you classify a cartridge with, and how would you go about scoring it objectively?

I think a decent start would be.

1. Sticker condition

Is the sticker faded? Is it scratched? Are their any signs of peeling? Are their signs of water damage? How much of it's gloss/luster does it retain? Is the manufacturers sticker in good condition?

2. Cartridge condition

Is the cartridge scratched or discolored? Are their any gouges or noticeable markings? Have the screws started any form of corrosion?

3. Working condition

Does the game work? Does it work on first boot every time? Are there known problems with it saving? Are the pins in good condition, and lacking any corrosion (erosion or chemical).

Yes, I understand that the collecting community already has a tendency to be elitist douchebags, and this might further that problem, but I'm getting sick and tired of games in shit condition being listed for full price.

Any grading system is bad for electronics unless it's made by actual enthusiasts and NOT collectors.

Otherwise cap replacements, battery replacements, and other preventive maintenance/repairs would downgrade a game.

Fuck anything like VGA.

Why?

Hey /VR/, I just bought Fighters Megamix and NiGHTS today at a flea market for 20$. Nothing to brag about at all, but is there anything you guys found from flea markets for cheap or were surprised to find there?

I had to check the cinemassacre youtube to see if you were trolling, but there isn't a James and Mike Monday video on these games so I guess someone actually did pick a game up at a flea market.
>>
The only retro thing I can buy at the fleamarket now is cast iron cookware
>>
>>3303620
Not a flea market find, but coincidentally I found this copy of NiGHTS at thrift store for $3 fairly recently. It's a not for resale version, which I'm guessing is probably because it was sold with the system? I don't know if that makes it more rare or less valuable or whatever, but it's a nice find.

Hi, /vr/. I'm currently playing all the Zeldas chronologically and just finished A Link to the Past. Since I don't own a N64 and I'm a bit too poor to afford it, what would be my best bet for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask: the Gamecube ports or the Virtual Console emulation?

Hey /vr/! I wanna start retro gaming on the cheap and I have a couple of questions.

If I build a cheapo emulation box with 240p output then is it worth getting a decent CRT? Or is there no point when I'm not using native hardware?

Is there anything specific I need to look for when purchasing a CRT? I've been looking at preowned broadcasting ones. I'll probably grab a cheap 14" one to sit under my monitor, what do you guys think?

Dust Man, who was created by the manga artist of One Punch Man.
>>
>>3300870
Yes. Almost all of them.

We should define retro by consoles that were about gaming, and consoles that became multimedia systems.

I would argue that the 6th generation was the last generation to focus on gaming, and beyond that, consoles became focused solely on multimedia.

It was breathtaking at the time. If you as a "modern gamer" *ptoi* play it now you'll experience a mixed bag of advanced visuals and surprising detail combined with what you will probably consider stiff controls and stilted dialog.

The game was solid even before Nintendo characters starred in it. It was destined for success, although from what I understand it was actually a semi-budget title, they never expected Smash to become as popular as it was. I remember there was little hype before the release.
