Is /vr/ a dadgaming board?
The reason this thought was brought to my head is because so many people prefer the older entries in /vr/ franchises to more recent ones, people prefer the old Castlevania games to SOTN, people prefer the classic Puyo Puyo games to Fever, early FF games to the later entries, classic Gradius trilogy to Gaiden, heck oldschool shmups to later shmups in general, etc. etc.This is all beside the fact /vr/ shits on non-retro games, but this thread is not about that.

As gaming stopped being niche, it grew more popular, budgets increased and companies needed more people buying, which meant games stopped being good overall

This is an interesting thing to think about. I love both retro and modern games, but many series that have been around for a long time have changed into different kinds of games that may not appeal to people used to what the series used to be.
But even though I hate what's happened to Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider and Castlevania specifically there are still other games that now scratch those itches. Or new itches I never knew about.
Why did New Challengers sound worse than Turbo? For comparison:

arcade went from FM based in HF to Sample based in NC and much more synth sounding.
SNES adaptations just followed each style
Which would you say are the must-play games in the Donkey Kong series?
I've been playing lots of games from classic series that I never bothered with in my childhood, so I don't know anything about the Donkey Kong games bar that they're platformers.

Megaman 7 regularly sold for 40-80$ in 2010 and it isn't even that rare.

Phantasy Star Online 2 does it. It's quite subtle because when shit gets bad you're not listening to the music.
Help me out, /vr/. I want to get into this series and the steam sale seems like a good opportunity for that but I don't know where to start.
You can start with VI, VII or IX. Those are probably the best starting points.
Avoid the VI HD edition though, it's grotesquely ugly. Can you get the regular one on Steam?
Yes, they are all excellent purchases. Don't worry about the emufags telling you are doing the wrong thing. Squeenix is still a fantastic company and you should support them bringing old games to new platforms.

I went to play Harvest Moon on the SNES today and was shocked to see my save file in slot 1 was gone. HOWEVER. The save file in slot 2 was still there. How is it possible to lose one save file and not the other? Obviously the battery still works if the 2nd save is there.

I don't think you can delete the save files in HM for SNES. You just save over the old ones.
You probably didn't put the cartridge in all the way and screwed you save files. Had it happen to me plenty of times with other games

What engine is Witchhaven based on?
Only ever had the demo (providing this's Witchhaven 2 and not the first) loved that demo. All the spells and different potion effects and stuff made it feel hella different, though an entirely meleefocused fps was hard to work in those days. Used to love this sword/morning star combo you could whip through stuff with.
People seem to really hate the first.

I love gen 3 & 4 games, but I'm just awful at them. I don't think I've beaten more than 5 games from before gen 5. Should I give up or are there any easyfun games out on gen 2, 3 and 4 systems?

It depends how you define 'easyfun' games.
The second gen is about getting 'easyfun' - you pop a cartridge, turn on the power switch and play till the end of your try. Gain more points than you did - pure arcade fun. If you want some more complicated second gen fun, you should try Intellivision, Colecovision; their games generally are more complicated than Atari 2600 games, but still they are easy to play.
At the other side you MUST read manuals. As for Atari 2600, game modes are represented...
