I've been meaning to ask on the Neo-Geo forums but I'll ask here first if anyones got some input.

My MVS cab is a 2 slot cabinet, that has a 4 slot board in it. Its obviously been replaced by the previous owner, and he got it from a place in vancouver (pacific vend stickers plastered everywhere).

Now this thing has some wonky as fuck behaviors.

>Slot 1 displays images incorrectly
Previous owner says the contacts were dirty. Its displaying I guess shifted bits, so there are obvious lines with incorrect graphics. I hosed it with contact cleaning but I haven't taken it out yet.

>Slot 2 doesn't have sound
>Slot 3 appears to be perfect
>Slot 4 has really low sound
>If multiple games are in, Slot 3 doesn't have sound

Among a few other issues.

Is it possible its not getting enough juice from the power supply? Theres absolutely no sound if I have multiple games in. Occasionally it will also skip games, but if I remove a game from the board it sometimes works.

Supposedly 4 slots are just wonky. I'll probably document everything wrong with it and make a post on the Neo-Geo forums later.
>>
Came across a rather niffy CIC mod for the NES that involves soldering 2 wires to the board.

If anyone wants any information on this, I'd be happy to help.

Could a faulty limit switch on a Sega CD(2) lead to damaged gears and the sled attempting to go further away from the center than it should, or could damaged gears be mimicking a faulty limit switch?

Bought an "as is" Model 2 and I'm trying to get it up and running correctly.
Reads discs, but seems to take a bit long to load at times (I have no "properly working" point of reference so I can't really say on that one) and tracking for audio at times.
These are often times accompanied with grinding noises coming from the sled; The reason I'm not sure it's a limit switch issue is because one of the gears is a bit chewed up and that the grinding noise happens both when the assembly is near the center(what a limit switch problem would cause) as well as it pushing all the way out to the very edge.

If it is a limit switch issue (and as such need new gears or something along those lines) would someone be able to point me in the direction of decent instructions on how to go about either repairing said switch/bringing it back into proper alignment, or if it would be possible to replace the switch?

I have some video of the drive in action, but I still need to cut out the useless junk and/or possibly retake it as it the focus is debatable at times.

TFTD could look spectacular with a modern game engine.
>>
It's hard, very, very hard. Why? The devs were responding to feedback from UFO Defense players who complained that the game was too easy because it had the difficulty bug that nobody knew about. Certain additions to TFTD such as melee weapons were due to player suggestions as well. "Some of the aliens have melee attacks, so the player should also be able to use them."

UFO Defense never gets that hard even on Superhuman and it's almost a breeze once you know what everything does and when it does it. Knowing TFTD intimately will just help you survive a bit better.

>flying Chryssalids
>maps with bazillions of tiny rooms in them
>flying suits don't work on land
>more enemies can use psionics
>tech tree is a lot more complicated
>TFTD equivalent of laser rifles has ammo clips so you can't fire it ad infinitum
>all ranged weapons have fewer rounds in their clips than UFO
>two part base missions
>unscheduled cruise ship and trawler attacks that can happen at random with no prior warning
>mixed alien crews
>all alien bases have Lobstermen and Tentaculats manning them
>Lobstermen are damn near impossible to kill
>only Lobsterman commanders let you beat the game unlike UFO where any commander can be captured

I'll make this quick, my 8 year old son is a genius at math, He's at an 11th grade level, so I took him out of his school and i'm now homeschooling him, Since He knows math, We now do Video Game class and thats pretty much it, He has to research an old game then beat it..

This months game is Donkey Kong Country, He has to research the whole story, all the characters, all the names of everything, then he has to beat the game..

Got an emulator going now and hes loving it..

What should next months game be? It has to be from 1990-1997 and on the NES/SNES

I was thinking Mortal Kombat, any ideas?

Valiant
or
Valiant Vaccinated + Trailblazer?
>>
>>2858198

Vaccinated can be run with any gameplay mod, not just Trailblazer.
Valiant by itself is still the truest experience, though.

So, should I buy an Atari 2600 or an SNES?
Explanations are highly appreciated.
I, personally think I should buy an Atari atm.
If I decide to buy an Atari 2600 I'd buy the edition as in the picture.

Atari 2600 for arcades 'sit down for 5 mins and play a game' although I played HERO on the 2600 for almost 8 hours the first time I played it

Snes for jrpgs, arcade ports, and a few weird shmups but also megaman X, PILOTWINGS and more.

Snes is more expensive than the Atari overall, upto you is the depth of what you'd like to play, I own both.

Why was Leon's uniform different from every other officer in the RPD? Other than Kevin from the Outbreak games, no one else dresses like that. Neither of them are SWAT, nor STARS. Was this shit ever explained beyond "they're protagonists so they have to look different"?

Wasn't he a trainee or rookie or some such?

Looks like a tactical uniform, really. The extra padding in the elbows, and the vest pouches somewhat support that. If memory serves, most of the officers you encounter in the games I have played were just in their dress blues.

Better graphics, resolution and soundtrack, it's based on the megadrive version so if you played the snes you'll find the level design a bit weird.
The only way to run this thing on a modern os is to install windows 3.1 on dosbox and mount it to cd-rom drive, pretty annoying.

My first 3D console was an N64 and a copy of Ocarina of Time, yet I admit its library was infinitely inferior to the PS1

Why can't other N64 bros admit it?
39 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>Why can't other N64 bros admit it?

I don't think anybody on /vr/ is contesting that the N64 had a smaller library. That's beside the point, though. People enjoy the platform for the quality of games available for it. I've also felt it worthwhile to invest in a WonderSwan Color, even though it has comparatively much fewer games than the GBA. There's no other way for me to play the Makai Toushi SaGa remake. Plus I did think the WSC remakes of FF1 and 2 were much more solid than their GBA counterparts.

Anyway, I owned both an N64 and a PS1 at some point during my youth, so both have a lot of nostalgia for me. N64 mostly for Ocarina of Time and Smash Bros., and PS1 for RPGs.
>>
Arguing that a library is inferior is a completely pointless exercise. If my favorite games of all time were Super Mario 64 and OoT, then the N64's library would be superior to the PS's.
>>
PS1 had a bigger and better library but it's hard not to admit that the N64 had a disproportionately large number of influential games.

Don't read guides, don't listen to people. The game isn't the hardest, so you can forge your own way through it pretty comfortably.

There's a ton of random shit that can happen though (and stuff that you won't see coming and can't exactly prepare for), so multiple runs are definitely better.

Seek out the side quests

>>2865225
Dude he was asking for advice

Do you know how pissed I was when I worked so hard to get Kiss for fucking Frog and he gets killed by Lavos eggs in the 1992 segment - fuck you I'm doing him a favor

Overrated:

FFT - What if war was fought by a blond Mary Sue with plot twists by those who never played Tactics Ogre and an ending that completely removed the ramifications of war and would be inexcusable for an /a/ ending

Baldur's Gate series - epic beginning that ends up being a chase for a boss that left MC behind and a sequel that left most of the interesting questions on the downfall of a party out of the player's hands and just hand waves it in the beginning as evil mage = bad ass, oh and ass pull story power creep where game becomes about the unlikely rise to power about guy with comedic companions /did not finish playing

Suikoden 2 - politics and betrayal potential ruined by buddy buddy ending cheapening everything in war

Xenogears - Freudian plot potential ruined by hand waved second arc that just shoe horns love interests in

Silent Hill/Clock Tower/Resident Evil - Horror Game that only makes sense if characters were Mary Sue not in terms of combat but being a magnet for a plot device monster

Underrated:

FF8 - What if Squall died theory existential dream theory

Shin Megami Tensei series - three way morality choice that leads to a real face off against a god like being with Ass Pull system that at least explains why the MC can reach that point at all in the end

Saga series - actually has the guts to tell adventures where companions don't stay in one place. More organic than Suikoden/Baldur's Gate and immediately gives players choices on who to choose

Tales of Destiny - surprise Leon ending if initially defeated only

X-com series - companion loyalty simulator

Lunar series - actual implications for hero prototypes getting old

Hell Night - Horror game where MC is not Mary Sue exception while also being Mary Sue

Romance of the Three Kingdoms series - MCs are actually possible to be grunts in war if wrong tactics or stupid decisions are made. VI actually shows events have to align for history to actually repeat itself and nobody is a CRPG/JRPG hero

What are some essential game translations?

Dunno about essential, but there were a couple of games like Mother 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3, or maybe Terranigma? Haven't really kept track of what's gotten rereleases on actual official platforms.
>>
>>2863970
Just look on RHDN for fully completed translations that appeal to you.
>>
>>2864129
I have been ones I got so far were

Romancing Saga - SO HAPPY ITS DONE
Romancing Saga 3 - Has some glitches but I loved it before
Gunmans Proof - Tried it out before but want to actually beat it
Live a Live - Same as above
Dragon Ball Z Super Saiya Densetsu - Want to try out the new translations instead of the crap I played back in the day

Aside from the obvious, (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Megaman) what's good on the NES?

I just got an Everdrive 64, and am pleasantly surprised to see it can emulate the NES. I was a PS1 kiddie, so I have no experience with 8 bit gaming.
