Hey /vr/, I just played through this and I absolutely loved it. I never played anything like it

Training characters to eventually turn them into a crafting currency, pretty much everything being optional, challenging platforming and puzzles in the hard mode dungeons, COOL AS FUCK BATTLE SYSTEM

The battle system really is deceptively simple, but actually practicing and timing your juggles out and maximizing damage is such a huge benefit. I really like how skillfully timing your moves gives more exp than just button mashing.

Anyone else play this? Whadja think about it?

I don't know shit about these games beyond that Yoh & Kou Yoshinari did art for them but your description got me interested. I'm generally interested in JRPGs with fun gameplay that aren't entirely driven by things that other genres do better.

Every time someone says "this game has bad gameplay but look past that and enjoy the story" I fucking tune out and yet every time someone praises the gameplay in a JRPG I get interested.
>>
>>2835125
Ha, I'd actually say it's pretty opposite of that. Almost all of the story and cutscenes come in what are essentially short stories of how characters end up dying.

It almost feels like a semi open world dungeon crawler or something. Very few of the areas you go to are really related to the story

Combat is kinda like xenogears, but each button represents a party member and everyone can attack at once. The skillful part of it comes from timing your attacks just right so you can juggle the enemy which causes them to drop gems that give percentage exp increase at the end of the encounter.

The game as a whole just feels so unique

Yeah I'm gonna add this to my list of JRPGs to play, thanks.

Mind you, I think it only sucked for magazine reviewers and people who don't know how to fucking play Mortal Kombat to begin with but goddamit, I liked this game so much I was able to beat it at least once a day.

What are the best multiplayer shooters on N64? Can be multiple right answers, framerate and controls matter, as do game modes, player counts, variety of game modes, etc.

I figure goldeneye and perfect dark are on the list. I also thought quake 2 was okay even if quake 2 itself isn't much IMO.

Yeah JFG is good. Turok 2 had a release that was strictly multipler, cant recall the name right now and too lazy to look it up. Conkers Bad Fur Day was fun. DK64 had something as well. BattleTanx series. And how can anyone forget the Vigilante 8 series, though that is with cars if you dont mind that

Turok Rage Wars. I loved it as a kid, but word on the street is that it's a pointless mess.

This is a bit of a stab in the dark, but does anybody know worthwhile /vr/ roleplaying games that put their emphasis on the roleplaying, and not on the fighting or their own narrative? Games that try to give you NPCs that interact with your character based on, well, your character. Games that not only give you skills, but maybe even traits, that might backfire on you. Games where every action you do, down to what stuff you buy in a shop, what selfless deeds you do, or how long you hesitate to do something heroic, is judged, and influences the game. Games where you genuinely enjoy playing a non-perfect character, instead of minmaxing to "beat" it.

What's a reasonable price for a working American SNES? eBay (I presume this is where you're supposed to buy retro games) has a wide range of prices.

I want an SNES to play Chrono Trigger, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, FF6, and Super Metroid.

whatever they're going for... if you're using ebay.
Make sure you have something worthwhile to plug a console into otherwise just use an emulator
>>
$20 at a yard sale. eBay is highway robbery. Good luck tracking down those games, too. Reseller scum tend to stalk out second-hand outlets and buy them up before any serious players can, then they just sit in some empty storage unit because no one in their right mind is going to pay that kind of money.

I'll be honest with you, I don't like playing this kind of game on a console emulator.

I wanted to be able to play with mouse as well, but I guess there's not a single version that let's you do that, right?
>>
>>2864683
I think Mac Wizardry had that.
There's also the Japanese Windows game but it seems impossible to come by nowadays.

If you're fine with keyboard controls there are the Japanese computer releases from the 80s, particularly the PC-98 one, which are more or less identical to the C64 and IBM port with higher resolution text and graphics and the extra options for Japanese text.
Apple II is obviously the original but it's a bit clunky compared to the ports.

I owned a Turbo Express as a kid and had around forty games for it when I sold it in the later mid-90s because I discovered Magic Engine. I liked it when I had it, at least.

One of the 5th gens best games. I honestly didn't find it all that great the first time but I replayed it a few years later and now it's one of my all time favorites. Try it again but go for "A" grades on all stages. It takes some practice but the game really shines once you git gud. Also if you didn't use the 3d controller you didn't play the game the way you were meant to.

So /vr/, I need your help.

In the 90's my parents bought an PC which included demo-CD, which had a car combat-like game, where you drove around in a futuristic arena-like environment. A futuristic car game that isn't about racing, but built around death matches. The story was the same as running man (the Arny somewhat-classic): You were a prisioner in death row and instead of rotting in jail they put you in a futuristic car in an area to duke it out with some other racers.

All I remember from it was that it was somewhat early-ish 3D. Advanced enough to have something in the pixels, but "early" enough to have a burning man sprite go out of the car sometimes when you destroyed one, and if you shot and killed said burning man, you would earn a "mercy kill."

It was almost like a blocky prototype version of the Extreme G bikes... but for PC, not the N64 of course.

If anything, I remember it had 3D-ish lasers and that after you reached your killing quota, you had to drive to the center of the map to leave via a bright andshiny tube. If you didn't, this arena-wide laser would pop up and destroy absolutely everything in the arena, including you.

Also, it bragged that it had a Playstation port "coming soon". Not sure if that ever materialized.

So far I can tell you it isn't Hover, Death Track, Twisted Metal, Carmageddon, Destruction Derby, Mega Race (or its sequel), nor Necrodrome.

Pic not related.

There were no player portraits in the HUD. And the vehicles are too big. And there weren't any roads (like I said, it was an arena game)

A long time ago, I started a thread where I posted all the games that Gamest elected as the best releases from their respective years. However, they also did separate two stand-alone books covering the games they considered the best games of all time: one published in 1991 and a second volume in 1998. I'll naturally start with the 1991 list. Keep in mind these are arcade only and Japanese centric.

No. 13 is Tower of Druaga by Namco, which the video for some reason skips. I'm kinda surprised Genpei Tomaden ranks above it, even if only by one slot.
>>
Also, No. 1 is supposed to be Legend of Valkyrie. Adventure of Valkyria was the earlier Famicom version.

I prefer raw pixels, but this at least looks better than scanline filters in my opinion.

I'm just trying to play the original pacman on my phone, but the "official" app is actually slightly different, the timing is off so the patterns don't work properly. I found MAME4droid, and I found about 10 different "puckman.zip" files, but none of them are complete. In particular, they are all missing the "namcopac" files. (Here is the MAMEdb link which shows the complete set of files: http://www.mamedb.com/game/puckman) If anyone can point my in the right direction before I kill myself that would be much appreciated.

Good fucking luck. My best friend and I pirated the shit out of arcade games in, like, 2001 or 2002 as 5th graders with 100% success rate but I can't for the life of me get shit to work now.

All I can suggest is downloading a torrent with the entire set already included.
>>
>>2868791
Yeah I'm not at my computer atm, and I don't really want to torrent a while set to my phone, but I'll definitely do that when I get home if I can't find it.
>>
>>2868785

This is why phones aren't for gaming. Get a used PSP or something dedicated to just that.
