So I've played most of the Civilization series. SMAC, III, IV, a bit of V. But I never really got much into Civ II.
Where exactly should I start? There seems to be a lot of options for playing Civ II. Vanilla, Vanilla + expansions, Multiplayer gold, Test of Time. Which one is the best to play, ToT looks pretty nice, are there any problems with it compared to vanilla civ II?
Also, what a about mods? Any essential bugfixes or patches, any good gameplay overhauls, or nice graphics mods? I'd like to know.

I've heard a few people recommend freeciv. Most of my experience with Civ2 is the PSX version though, so I've got no clue what the ToT version is like. I can't even really find what it does.
I've never played Test of Time so I can't comment on its quality. I've played the rest though and vanilla Civ II is probably the best place to get started. Multiplayer Gold sets all AI to be permanently hostile which isn't much fun and the two expansions are a mixed bag but fun to mess around with now and then.

I heard about the multiplayer gold thing, yea. I mostly play SMAC so the main reason I'm even wanting to play civ II is because I'm looking for something more laid back and easy as kind of a break, hostile AI sounds like the opposite. What do the two expansions add exactly?

No, maybe it's because I grew up with a Famiclone (that looked exactly like the japanese Famicom), but when I first saw the NES I thought it was bulky for no reason. It has a stat system so it's a RPG. How many of the stats actually work isn't important, as long as you get the illusion of choice.

MC had McKids which costed us money.
7UP had Cool Spot which costed us money.
Kellogs made a great platformer which was free.
Haribo (Hariboy's Quest) made a point and click adventure which costed us money.
McCain fries made a fun point and click adventure which was free.

That's kind of an ironic opening choice there, OP. The devs were actually concerned with making a good game over product placemen, so McDonalds ended up not backing that game because it didn't plug McDonalds food enough in their opinion.
Anyway, Biker Mice from Mars is one of the worst offenders ever. It is absolutely riddled with Snickers ads.
So I've been playing this game for 20 years, playing and finishing it every few years at least, and I had no clue about the electrocution method for beating this guy until yesterday.
I had been just blasting away with missiles like a fucking chump. Am I retarded? Did everyone else know?

The quickest way to kill Draygon is with a shinespark, but it's not easy. I see speedrunners flub the quick kill all the time.
A costly misstep, because Draygon is one of the two bosses in the game that can very easily kill you on a speedrun (the other being Phantoon). Basically, everyone hates Draygon.

VF5FS has solid netplay on PS3 and is $15 for a digital copy, beyond that you will be really lucky if you can either emulate the earlier VF games successfully or convince the PC ports of VF1/2 to let you play online on a modern system

What used to scare you as a kid? I ran to shut the power off on my SNES to avoid having to see this game over screen. I played Mortal Kombat 3 and nothing in that game scared me as much as this screen for some reason.
