how am I supposed to play this game? I get to around the 5th guy and I can't hit anything for shit or doge anything. The controls are literal dogshit
In the arcades you were supposed to use one joystick to strafe and the other to rotate, and combinations to jump, dash and shoot iirc.
This was the actual first game with target lock-on before Zelda and Tomb Raider

PS, if you're trying to trade I'm pretty much only looking for GameCube games and a copy of Splatoon for Wii U
What does /vr/ think of this game?
>>3020082
Never got around to playing it for some reason. Amazing soundtrack though.

It's the hardest one, isn't it? best castlevania game.
Pretty fun. Simon walks like he's really gotta dump ass though.

Secret of Mana is cool for the first time when you're 10 y/o playing it.
SoE is a never ending classic.
>Not SD3
Yeah SoM was an unfinished game, but SoE wasn't the best one either.
What does /vr/ think of this game?
That's not a game. That's a manual, OP.Game series is great and Obduction seems to be coming well together
It and the sequel Riven were both amazing. Still have my Win9x copies.
>>3019758
Myst was a Windows 3.x game though, not 9x.
Best Thief mission?
For me it's First City Bank and Trust, the number of entrypoints really adds a lot to the replay value.
Song of the Caverns. Comfy location, excellent ambient loops and pretty challenging overall.
>>3018019
This, it sums up everything I like about Thief and has some great NPCs.
In 2, my favorite is Precious Cargo for the unique location/theme.
>>3018519
The only issue I have with Precious Cargo is how linear it feels compared to the other levels, it doesn't loop back on itself.
The titanic deliberation
SUPER C
>>3017553
Super Contraas in the arcade version, not the watered down NES reworking.
>>3017553
This thread made me try Hard Corps for the first time. It's hard going, coming from the SNES version, where you can hold R to stay still and fire. I figured out you can switch to that mode by pressing A + B but it's still a bitch to get used to. Plus it makes ducking while firing a little less straightforward.
I like it so far though.
Was there every any real strategy for side-scrolling beat-em up bosses like pic related? surely there was more than "keep hacking at him til he dies and you have enough quarters"
Depends on the game, my fammie.
In most snes puncher walkans you can just spam your desperation move and shave away half his life bar in one or two lives, then just play normally. My favorite conveyor puncher boss fight of all time is still Rolento.

first for bring back carmack
2nd for graf shit flingingIt's news to me.
How do you guys feel about the people who take retro game roms, put them on carts, and sell them? How about people who do the same for romhacks? I know they don't lie about thier product, but it just feels so immoral, and it can't be legal right?
>>3022454
Why should what other people make and sell and buy affect you at all? Do you do these things? Does it ruin the legit games you have in some fashion?
>>3022465
What kind of question is that? I see someone selling these things for $40 per at a booth and I'm not allowed to have feelings for this?
Well they went through the trouble of burning the chip and soldering it to the cart and printing the box and labels, so that definitely takes effort.
But the key element here is the game itself. They didn't make the original game, nor did they hack the ROM. Selling something that someone built as a labor of love on top of a Nintendo game they love is double-immoral, and as far as Nintendo IP is concerned, probably illegal too.
ROM hackers distribute IPS patches for free - no original ROM data is passed around and no price is paid.
That's just my opinion though.
Which version of this flawed yet underrated game is the best?

I've always played the Genesis version, but the Saturn one looks WAY better (especially the intro, man, I miss old-school Sonic). Shame about the bland color palette.
Fun fact, there's a romhack of the Genesis version that has no flickies.
They are the same, only the special stages are different.
>>3015350
As someone who loved the sonic gamaes it boggles my mind how many apologists exist for the shit entries in the series, especially the shitty saturn ones.
>Celes is an interesting case, although you might not notice it at first. She's virtually identical to Terra, being a heavily armored mage, although her special ability quickly becomes useless due to a huge design flaw. "Runic" causes the next magic spell or lore to be nullified. Unfortunately, it's almost always the player casting those spells, not the enemy, so Celes will frequently absorb that Cure 3 you really needed for someone else.
This article states that the way Runic works is a design flaw. Do you agree? Personally, I disagree; to me, it's simply a design decision (which carries a neutral, rather than a negative, connotation). It has pros and cons like any other design choice, right? Who's to say it's flawed, really? Aren't most people who do say that basing their belief on an assumption -- that it must be flawed since, in their subjective opinion, this design decision's cons outweigh its pros? That's a silly position to take, especially since it implies that a flawless game would contain only primarily positive design decisions. It's important that not every item or ability is perfect, or the game will become bland, boring.
For example, suppose that Runic did work properly (according to the article); suppose it only absorbed harmful/enemy spells. The ability -- one of the game's mechanics -- would become simplified, stripped of all subtle nuance, making it less interesting. Far less thought would be required of the player in order to use it effectively in combat, devaluing strategic play, lowering the skill ceiling, and making battles both easier and less engaging.
The only way I would agree Runic is flawed is if I were presented with evidence that it does not work as originally intended.
I'm sure if I asked which article you were talking about, the name of the site it's being hosted on would immediately confirm my suspicions that it's not even worth responding to.
>>3016026
I think OP's referring to this:
http://thegamedesignforum.com/features/reverse_design_ff6_4.html
>>3016014
By the same logic, you could argue that the way reflect works is a design flaw, which is an idiotic argument to make. As it is, Runic/Reflect offer powerful effects that force you to alter your strategy to compensate for their weaknesses, which is exactly how they should be.
If you want to talk actual design flaws in FF6, I'd say the esper/spell system that allows every character to learn every spell is pretty terrible. And there's all the exploits and stuff, but glitches shouldn't really count as design flaws.
Are these games any good?
4, 5, and 6 are fantastic.
9 is a trainwreck.
The rest are okay.
0 (Akalabeth), 1, and 2 are archaic and primitive. Skippable if you want to.
3 is a simple strategy rpg
Escape from Mt. Drash is a mediocre curiosity with good music for its time.
4,5,6 are the true core of the series with the best gameplay, plot, and worldbuilding. 5 and 6 have been remade as total conversions of the PC game Dungeon Siege.
There are a couple of adventure game spin offs. Savage Empire and Martian Dreams. They're ok.
The console ports of Ultima games suck with the exception of Master System and Playstation(Jap only).
Ultima Runes of Virtue on the gameboy is a nice zelda-ish game.
7 and its expansion are great except for the combat. The best looking game of the series so this is where you should start to acclimatize yourself to oldschool graphics.
Ultima underworld (UU) 1 and 2 are must plays: the Skyrims of their times. They are first person with no party.
8 is shit
Ultima online is still going strong on official servers but like all MMOs is a waste of life.
9 is such utter dogshit that some people who were exposed to it quit gaming forever, took up real life sports and never looked back.
There were a couple of browser games that closed down a few years ago. Nothing of value was lost as all browser games are garbage.
Ultima 3 NES looks pretty sweet.
So why did Atari introduced the 7800 a year after they launched the 5200? Why didn't they just try to push the 5200 a bit more?
I thought the 5200 was launched in 82 and the 7800 in 86.
What I want to know is why Atari never bothered upgrading their hardware.
2600:6507(gimped 6502)
5200:6502
7800:6502
Seriously, what the fuck Atari?
>>3015868
What should they have upgraded to?
Make the 7800 a consolized ST with a 68000 like the 5200 was a consolized 400? Switching to a Z80 seems pointless and a x86 inappropriate at the time.
They also had the XEGS which obviously had a 6502 as a consolized XE.
The last one was great, here is another.
I'm currently on my third attempt at finishing this game with OpenXcom, it used to kick my ass as a kid but I'm FINALLY winning, though I just just lost my first base to retaliation (undefended).
Do you guys have any advice for air combat in the mid to late game? Which ships are worth researching and building? Interceptors with dual plasma cannons seem to be able to take down anything smaller than a battleship, but a lot of craft they just can't catch. Also where the fuck do I get ayylieum from, I need it to build EVERYTHING.
Just equip your Interceptors with PCs until getting an Avenger. Don't bother with anything else.
>>3008362
And from then on, Avengers are the best, with just using Skyrangers for troop transport?
>>3008372
Keep the Skyranger for reconnaissance (like searching for alien bases) because it doesn't need Elerium for fuel.
