15 KB,
I know that those old Game Doctor style resurfacers which used a crank to rub a layer off discs to take out scratches worked fine on other systems but would outright make DC games not boot from the start-up menu at all.

I tried that back in the day with a copy of RE:CV though curiously it would still read it if you booted the other disc and swapped it when prompted to do so in-game, but what about those commercial resurfaces?

Instead, they use a fluid to fill in scratches which again seems like it should work but DC's are pretty finicky about reading its...

Repaired hundreds of CDs/DVDs with one of those bad boys when I worked at a video store.

The only ones I couldn't get to work again were the obvious ones (huge scratches, cracks along the spindle-hole, stains, etc.)
>>
>>3033220
The old game doctors were supposed to be used with fluid too. If your games didn't boot, you were using it wrong. It's like sharpening a knife with a whetstone: you're not supposed to just scrape it dry.
>>
>>3033271
From my personal experience, these things are murder on discs. I had one of the discs I "repaired" explode in the drive while I was using it.

I promptly went out and found a place that has a professional resurfacer, that can put the protective layer back on.

37 KB,
So what the hell went wrong? Why did it take 15 years to get Duke Nukem Forever released? What the fuck was 3D Realms doing all that time?

(Game began development in 1997, so I felt it's reasonable to ask this here.)

Whoa shit, I've actually got that exact same magazine in a box in my parents' attic (assuming it wasn't thrown out.)

Also DNF was already in development for at least a year when this mag came out, possibly two.

They don't actually spend 15 years making the game. Like Team Fortress 2 and Doom 4, they keep scrapping it over and over.

This, they insisted on using the newest and prettiest engine available and since the textures and models for the older engine didn't look good enough, it was start over from scratch.

What do you want to talk about, OP? I think the games are pretty good, and I haven't had one complaint about the visuals. Always a good looking game. I'm just at a loss because I can never figure out which version of each game is the best.

I came across this old SNES cart board. I don't even know what game it is - can anyone help me find out?

Which way into the SNES does it go? PAL fag here (if that makes a difference). I want to see if it works.

Clean the pins, parts/chips side faces the back of the console.
>>
>>3032613
Pretty much every single Nintendo cart has chips facing the back of the cart.

>I dont know what game this is
The only way to know is to plug it in.

Literally thats it. A shitload of games use the exact same board and chipsets and the only difference is what rom is written to the mask rom.
>>
>>3032619
>The only way to know is to plug it in.
I'm worried about blowing something if I get it the wrong way around. You're sure the chips should face backwards?

Before I try I'm gonna get some alcohol and clean. >>3032618

If someone came up to your with an Earthbound 64 cart and said he would sell it to you but it has to be at a good price.

How much would you give him/her?

Nothing? It's a port of RR Revolution with a new "on-rails" drift physics engine, but you can choose to have the old physics instead.
The soundtrack is kinda small compared to the disc versions but it's still pretty awesome. Also it was developed by a western Nintendo studio themselves.

i suppose the music is kind of shit compared to SOR1&2 too.

i played some anime futuristic beat em up with a really long japanese name a few months back, any idea what it was ?, i don't wanna download a full romset again just to find it

i THINK it was based on an actual series too

Boring level design compared to SMB3. The levels had a lot of empty space, and few platforming challenges.

I don't want to argue about WHAT is considered retro, I want to talk about WHY the different opinions of "what is retro" exist.

I don't know what's right, and I'm not saying anything is right. I just want us to talk and make each other think about things, maybe you'll manage to sway some opinions either way.

Discuss.

And here's how I understand some viewpoints:

> Constantly 15 years before today's date
Because stuff gets old. The SNES wasn't a "retro console" when it came out, it was the latest and greatest of its day. One day in the future, a bunch of faggots will post here saying how antiquated having a physical controller is, and reminiscing about their retro PS4.

> A set date, usually 1999, 2000, or 2001
Because the games...

Also, is retro gaming about the attitude and "spirit" in which the game is made? There are plenty of indie developers today making retro-styled games which mainstream AAA players will never play. Could something like Fez or Shovel Knight ever be considered /vr/?
