Is this ad actual USD prices, or is this maple or kangaroo dollars?

I was was a kid in the 90s, and recall new Super Nintendo games priced more like $50-$60. And games tossed in the budget bin at KB toys were more like $19.99. I seriously do not remember $80 games ever and I was totally a Super Nintendo kid.

That's Maple syrup land money.

US didn't see prices like that till N64.
>>

Makes more sense now.
>>
>>3009275
With that said I don't think there were 80 dollar games. Sure they went up to 70 bucks for the N64, but not 80~90. That was probably one of the advantages for the PS1 during that time, they probably paid 50 bucks for their games instead. I had a N64 during that period though.

What are some games you discovered through Classic Game Room or other video reviews? I found a new respect for a bunch of shmup titles that I never would have heard of before. I never grew up with sega consoles in the house so I never heard of the Thunder Force series for one.

I have /vr/ to learn about games from, so I don't need to waste time by looking at any reviewer.
>>
He's probably the only reviewer on youtube that i genuinely respect. Im a great Atari fan, and the dedication he puts to his videos is awesome. And the most important thing: he barely reviews mainstream shit that every dork loves to talk to.
>>
>>3007278
Calling what Mark does "reviews" is incorrect. Mark does "first look"'s. Calling what he does a review is fucking laughable, because he often gets information blatantly wrong.

>game has high score table
>you're always putting in your initials even though no one else will ever get to see it or try to beat it because your friends are a bunch of plebs who hate arcade games

Just end it all.

Most machines only kept scores for a day, isn't it?
>>
>tfw your initials actually are ASS and Capcom censored them

>>3016987
I'm specifically referring to home ports of arcade games where you get to save your score, but yeah.

It's a picture from the Genesis version of Aladdin, from an emulator, and stretched to an ungodly 5120x3584 size. You can tell because the dithering isn't working the way it would on a CRT.

just got this, heard it was a good arcade style sportan. I haven't got the first clue about basketball, how do I get good at it?

you could try playing the fucking game
>>
>>3016651
You really don't even need to know the rules of basketball to play NBA jam, it's that simplified
>>
>>3016659
Says absolutely nothing. Your shitpost was not needed, shitposter.

OP, the key to winning at Jam is being aggressive. Practice knocking over your opponents, and learn to do it when they're vulnerable, like when they take a shot.

Fire mode is activated only when three shots physically go through the basket. This means that you can prevent an opponent's fire by goaltending (jumping up and grabbing the ball on its way down) on the last shot. You can also use this to your advantage when trying to obtain fire for yourself. If an enemy is about to make a shot that would disrupt your three-in-a-row, jump up and grab that shit so you can still make your third basket. This should tell you that when you want to secure fire or remove someone's fire that dunks should be your priority.

Do you guys have any tips for getting good at this game?
I've been playing regularly for a few months now and I'm still having problems with stuff as simple as setting up chains.

Is there any hope for retro collecting? Is it too late?
18 posts and 1 images submitted.

Too fucking late

Get a flashcart or if you are too cheap get those modern multicarts like the Coolboy Real game ones, or the red NES one
>>
No. Emulate, buy flash carts, and collect non-game items like artbooks and guides.
>>
At some point the bubble will surely burst, just like with comic books and baseball cards.

Anyone ever play the original LOK? I've only played Soul Reaver, but a shop I frequent has this game. Is it good? Should I bother?
23 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I liked it, but it's very different from Soul Reaver. It's more like a top-down Zelda game with vampires.
>>
>>3016168
That's what I've been noticing from images and people's descriptions. I'd be down with that.
>>
I loved it. The cut scenes are pretty cool albeit cheesy. The spells/powers were pretty brutal, just an all-around cool adventure game with spoopy atmosphere.

I want to play DDR at home

What is the best DDR mat I can buy that isn't an actual DDR floor
24 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Basically your best bet is to either buy a used cobalt flux or build your own out of 2x4s and some plexiglass.
>>
flat soft pad, plywood, vinyl covering (think office chair wheel carpet mat), 2-3 cardboard squares taped to plywood under pad for each arrow, staple gun and duct tape the shit of it to wrap it up good
>>
flat soft pad: 2nd player tier
foam soft pad with raised buttons: good enough tier.
hard pads: asian girl tier.

hey /vr/ I built an athlon64 3200 retro rig with a voodoo2, it works great but currently I use a 16:9 LCD monitor so it's not perfect for all 4:3 content. There are plenty of 4:3 LCD around but I also found a few 4:3 CRT monitors, the best one being a samsung syncmaster 793df s. Is it really worth getting the CRT over an LCD? My inner nostalgia wants to go for the CRT but I'm not sure if it's the best choice.

>>
>>3015393
If you can get it to output 240p to it, then yes.
>>
What's wrong with the 16:9? A pillarboxed 4:3 image on a 16:9 monitor is as large as a 19" 4:3 monitor's and you have the extra width for things that support it.
>>
>>3015407
everything is stretched to 16:9 by the lcd monitor and I can't bypass that.

Do anyone else wish games were never advanced past the late 1980s / early 1990s level? Imagine if we had 40 years of progress what kind of advanced ideas would have been invented. Graphics make people lazy t b h

Nah, I love retro games but I also like a lot of modern stuff. I do love reading about hardware limitations and how developers overcame those obstacles though, and I think limitation fuels creativity. I love the modern indie scene because of this, these beastly machines and great work pipelines but a limited team thag cant just throw money at the problem.
>>
>>3014803

That's not what's holding games back.

What's holding games back is that they try to tell a story the same way as a movie, which doesn't work. Look at games like Silent Hill, or Thief, for games that tell a good story the video game way.
>>
If we didn't have advancement in hardware then the whole industry would stagnate and then we'd just have the Atari crash all over again.

How/Where do you guys buy your retro games/consoles? I have been thinking about starting a collection.

>I have been thinking about starting a collection.

You're a decade too late unless you're made of money. The ship was starting to sail in 2008 and since the turn of the decade it's been gone for good.

good thing I have everything I'd ever want to have
>>
Just get yourself a nice 20-ish game collection and emulate/flashcart everything else.

Anything bigger is just autistic.
>>
>>3014357
Kinda this. 20 games isn't much.

If you have a large collection of games you're not autistic for it. You're probably an asshole or have problems though.

I don't think a janitor nuked the last thread considered he/she was deleting shitposting there, I think the thread got deleted due to receiving multiple reports.

Though I could be wrong though and we might just have a schizophrenic janitor after all.
