The fact that threads like these cause such a shitstorm is just a testament to how great the series is. You can make a good argument that any one of the Mario games is the best, and it seems that almost every game has equal support, as opposed to Zelda where most fans back ALttP or OoT. Each game manages to have its own flavor that some love and some don't, which results in such diverse opinions on what the crown jewel truly is.But seriously though, Super Mario 64 is the best.
In lieu of the other thread, what are some of the best box arts you've seen for video games? Pic related in my opinion. I'll dump a few to get it rolling.

Are they trolling us with this collection? It's one thing to only put like 9.5 games in a collection in the first place. Why the fuck would they choose to make one of them Altered Beast?
Is there anyone out there who likes that game at all? It's slow and boring as fuck and even looks like shit. Both Streets Of Rages are way better if they wanted a beat em up in there.
On top of that, why when they've already done Fantasy Zone 2W would they waste time doing regular Fantasy Zone 2 for SMS? It's not even a good 3D port. Does anyone out there understand what the heck they're thinking with this?

Obviously no one is expecting them to port Moonwalker, but there are much better games they already ported they could have included instead. Gunstar Heroes, Space Harrier, Shinobi 3, Sonic 2, Outrun, Afterburner 2, even Ecco The Dolphin all would have been better choices than Altered Beast.

I only had Sonic Triple Trouble and Tails Adventure, it was alright. I had an ac adapter so I didn't have to waste batteries
When it comes to the NES's soundchip, what do you think about the triangle wave?
For those who aren't aware, basically the NES has 3 channels in its sound hardware that can produce tones: two can produce "bleepy" pulse waves, and the third is a smooth-sounding triangle wave that's usually used for bass. I've always wondered why Nintendo chose to include this in the NES's soundchip. On one hand, it makes the NES sound different from other consoles at the time. On the other, dedicating an entire channel to this sound makes little sense, as it's not a versatile sound at all, and the lack of volume control basically forces it to be used for basslines.
Do you think it was a good decision for Nintendo to use this sound instead of something else, like another pulse wave? Also, post examples of good (and bad) uses of the triangle wave in NES music.
it works well for bass, and is going to be more audible through shitty TV speakers than a sine wave

It actually would've been harder to implement a sine wave into the NES at the time.
The NES's triangle wave had a very course amplitude resolution, it looks more like a series of stairs than an actual triangle. That's what gives it those characteristic metallic harmonics as opposed to triangle waves sounds generated by many other synths and such.
How about a Final Fantasy VIII thread? It'd be sweet to have a good thread on it and if people that weren't a fan could just hide the thread or something because I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. But

I'll start, I enjoyed the garden settings and the various missions like the Edea assassination the most. Favorite characters would be Squall or Chicken Wuss. As for GF's, Diablos is by far my favorite. I most definitely beat all the optional bosses, and as typical as this is, Liberi Fatali is my favorite track from not only this game but all games.

Triple triad is definitely my favorite mini game in any RPG.
Characters are definitely hit or miss with people, I like them but I see where you're coming from.
There's a lot of GF's so it'll be hard to choose.

What is the worst?
Double Dragon V for Sega has to be the worst. Shit gameplay, zero storyline and really moronic characters without distinctive skillsets.
IMO, fighting games without a "moves list" can all fuck off.
The Justice League game for SNES/Genesis.

I'm thinking Super Mario Bros on NES.
My son's first game was Mischief Makers because that's the game I was playing at the time. He grabbed the controlled and fucked around with the controls, having carefree fun. I think he was 2 or 3 at the time.
I don't think I would have ever thought about what game would be his first, it just happened naturally.
I'd just let him have free reign of my collection. Let him explore on his own.

That sounds like a good idea and really nice thing to do until you come home and see some of your cartridges are broken from being stepped on, discs are scratched and no longer readable, or some stuff is straight up missing after he invites his new friend over to play games after school.

I think a lot of people don't really understand what memes are. The Retron 5 for the wife is one, but it's much bigger and more obvious than most. The best memes are the little ones, odd opinions or bits of carefully crafted falsehood on certain things that spread and grow the more you mention them. Then before long you see other people saying them and it becomes part of the board culture.

When i was a kid i had some strange third person sci-fi shooter. The main character had somekind of sunglasses and weared them backwards. When you completed the game , you unlocked new characters. I cant find the name on the internet, does anyone have a clue how it is called? And why does nobody knows this if you google for it, it was a pretty fun game.

AES is affordable... the games are not. Cabinet would be cool, but no space. this is attractive to me, but are all the negative reviews true? is there any hacks or shit to fix it or do anything cool with it?

It's literally emulation. It's literally running games off Final Burn Alpha. It's a waste of money.
Get the MVS cabinet and the all-in-one pirate cartridge with every game on it, if you absolutely MUST own an actual Neo Geo.
That shit was so bad, SNK ended the contract with the company making those in less than a year. Dont bother buying it unless you want the controller.
