This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Star Wars trilogy arcade was nerve wracking as a kid
>You can fail each and every level

Pic related was intense as fuck. The game starts with you shooting tie fighters, then Darth Fucking Vader is trying to strike your ass down in first person view.

How hard is this game?
I remember trying to play it a few years ago and it literally blew me the fuck out.
Do I just suck or what?

In terms of where to go? You just have to pay attention to what people say mostly.

Hey /vr/, I just picked up Final Fantasy I-II Dawn of Souls today. Which one should I start with first? I or II? Which do you think is better?

i think ff1 is objectively better, story and game-play wise. FF2 story is like completely impossible to follow and the combat/leveling system in it is garbage.

The DoS version of FF1 is radically different from the original game. Enemy stats are toned down, items are made cheaper, characters have MP instead of spells-per-level, etc. You're essentially playing the game on cruise control.

As for the story, FF1 is very minimalistic. You're sent out to gather four key items before taking on the final boss, and your characters are just blank slates. The game definitely emphasizes gameplay over plot.

FF2's characters are more developed and have identities and backstories. You can nonetheless develop their skills however you want. FF2's plot follows a consistent series of quests, as assigned to you by Fynn's princess, Hilda. Guest characters constantly join and leave the party under various circumstances as you progress.

FF2's mechanics were considered pretty experimental at the time, because your stats and skills leveled up individually as they were put to use, as opposed to your characters gaining traditional experience levels like in most other FF games. The system is similar to, say, Morrowind. The more you swing a sword, the more likely your strength and sword skill level are going to increase; the more you take damage from attacks, the more likely your HP will increase; and so on.
>>
>>2843172
I suggest going through 1 first, if only because going through 2 first will make going back to the first game feel like a terrible chore.

In some ways I think the DoS version of 1 is among the best because there's absolutely zero need to grind ever and you can blow through it quickly. The setting and story are a little neat, but the gameplay of the first game is extremely boring. No matter your party set up, at least 90% of the actual gameplay is just having everyone in your party attack.

FF2 is very much a love or hate kind of experience. Unlike almost every other JRPG, your actions in battle all matter. >>2843580 describes it well. It makes for a very unusual type of RPG where if you want a powerful mage, you get them by training them in magic constantly, in every fight you're in. Some people love it, others hate it. You'll just have to try for yourself and see.

I bought a NES emulation system from amazon, an original NES controller and SMB3 for my bro for xmas. Should I give it to him or keep it for myself?

give him the system
>>
This certainly needed its own topic.
>>
Well if you bought it for your bro, I assume you think he would like it. Or did you really just buy it for yourself and use your bro as an excuse to purchase it?

what are some 3d mech battle games that don't require you to manage 29,281 parts throughout the game and can just have fun battles?

>that don't require you to manage 29,281 parts throughout the game

The worst you get when it comes to that is Armored Core which is really not much harder than any other game that has character customization.
>>
>>2842565
Obvious choice is mech warrior series, also virtual on.
>>
Virtual On but you'll need the twin sticks. GOAT arcade game though.

What are /vr/'s favorite puzzle games? Recently I've been playing Emeraldia by Namco. In addition to the standard unlimited mode, there's an Adventure mode, where you have to clear a path to drop fish off the bottom of the screen. It's a very fun game overall, and making large chains of blocks is very satisfying. What puzzle games do you like?

There are way too many action puzzle games that involving matching or forming lines. I prefer those that at least try to break away from those overused mechanics.

I own one. Bought it at Super Potato when I was in Tokyo.
Pretty much the best famicom console I own
(compared to an original Famicom or a famiclone)
Plus you get the built-in disk system.
Only downside, the controller cords are too damn short.
>>
>>2842225
shorter than the original famicom?

I want to play pic related but don't have an SNES and I'm not getting it any time soon.

Should I emulate it or play it on PS1?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2841853
PS1 versions sucks ass due to bad porting and terrible load times. If you want to pay for it, play the DS version. Otherwise just emulate on whatever.
>>
Don't play the PS1 version, the load times are absolute bullshit and the animated cut scenes don't add anything to the game.

Get the DS version or just emulate the SNES version.
>>
>>2841853
The DS version is probably the best, so if you can buy or emulate that, go ham.

Let's talk neat extras in console ports of arcade games, /vr/: bonus levels, characters, and specially creative new game modes.

Combat School in Metal Slug was fun (infinite shotgun runs and whatnot), but my favourite would have to be Edge Master Mode in Soul Blade

You know, I used to love Tekken Force until I realized the engine only supports 2 enemies at once and half the stage is a boss fight that's just a normal tekken match and you have to repeat it three times because of the copper silver golden key bullshit and all you get for it is a broken overpowered joke character.
Then I realized Tekken Ball is really where it's at.

Cleared both modes of the Origins version.

Consistently voted "Worst Final Fantasy Game Ever" for some reason. I guess most people put it down long before they could ever finish it. I didn't see anything wrong with the game.
