Should I play this? Does it fix the silly censorship the NES version had? (Pentagrams replaced by triangles, church replaced by clinics). I also heard it doesn't dumb down the gameplay like the GBA version did.

>Nintendo censorship!!
It's even come to /vr/, god dammit
>>
The GBA one is preferable but at the end of the day the games aren't very good. Start with FF3 on the NES
>>
>>2850493
^ this. GBA isn't "dumbed down", they just made the leveling of stats and magic much less tedious, which is a GOOD thing. There's also the added "Soul of Rebirth" story after you beat it. But like the anon above said, at the end of the day they're really not very good. If you only plan on playing it just for the sake of beating it at least once, do the GBA version. Doing the PSX version is just ripping yourself off of many hours of time that could have been spent on a better game.

Hey /vr/, How d you feel about reproductions of NES games that are just way too expensive to by original? I was thinking of doing this for games like pic related because i'd rather pay for the labor involved to re burn an eprom, and that person would likely be a real /vr/ trooper and get the game for substantially less, even though it isn't a very expensive game.

Why not just get a flash cartridge or emulate?
Reproductions are shit and the people behind them scum.

I enjoy having some kind of physical representation of the game with its label also. Seeing it on a list on a menu screen along with a bunch of other roms half heartedly tossed on there because why not sucks the fun out of it for me.
>>
>>2850521

that sounds really autistic

I was at my local game store the other day and saw this game called Rush n' Attack in the NES section and I was wondering if it was any good. I asked the clerk how good it was. He said that the game was okay. I also checked a game review on Youtube and it said the same thing. Now I would like some extra opinions from any of you guys who have played the game before.

Where can I get the original Warcraft games?

It looks like Blizzard only sells the recent games and don't give a fuck about their classics but I'm still having problems trying to find a physical copy...

Is my best option piracy?

They haven't sold WC1 in nearly two decades now. They didn't even sell it in the box with WC2, SC and Diablo 1.
For WC2 you should try to get the Battlenet Edition.
>>
used to love the 'head to head' box art of the old warcraft games. Anyone got a good copy of the pirate themed one?

I need some more games with a deep story and the lore spans several centuries. Are there any more out there besides Xenogears?
38 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
SaGa Frontier's 2 plot spans several generations, divided between two major protagonists. The game doesn't adequately explain the backgrounds of certain key characters or concepts though. There are a lot of things you'll discover only by reading the Ultimania guide published at a later time.
>>
Is xenogears worth playing at this point?

I'm curious to try it but I feel most 90s era jrpgs haven't held up too well.
>>
>>2843875
Yes. It's still a good game, and doesn't need quality of life improvements beyond platforming sections that cannot be done while an encounter is loading.

With the confirmation of System Shock 3, I think it's time we discussed the first two games.

Did you like 1 or 2 more? Personally I preferred the first because it focused more on SHODAN, whereas The Many took too much of the spotlight in the sequel. Also the hacking levels were leagues better in SS compared to the rather lame minigame that 2 had. I think the music and level designs were better in the first as well.

Three was confirmed? That's both a nice and terrible thing to hear. Hopefully they will give it the work deserving of such a pedigree.
>>
>>2842678
I hope they make it more linear with awesome graphics
>>
>>2842682
Some of the people working on it worked on the originals (as well as Thief and so on) so there is a faint glimmer of hope. But they are unproven in their current form.

Terri Brosius is essentially confirmed, since she's doing voices for their other game. Eric was involved with the recent SHODAN soundpack for Dota 2, so maybe she can drag him into this.

Mine would be Super Mario RPG HD with an arranged electronic/orchestra soundtrack, and 2d character models by Chris Niosi.

Why? Because of that Rawest Forest flash?

I don't hate Kirbopher but his art isn't great. It would be completely out of place for a Mario game.
>>
Kirbopher is my favorite artist and animator ever. That's just my opinion, though. I agree, it might be kind of out of place for some of the game but Chris' art is amazing!

You must be underage as fuck... SMRPG is perfect the way it is.

LCD games are retro. Some of them, at least.

Are there any that /vr/ still plays... or collects?

I have a few of these. Anyone doing mods on LCD games? I think it's easy to do backlight and speaker mods, and a total conversion of the LCD screen to LED.

Has anyone ever imported one of these? I remember there being a chocobo Tamagotchi-style mini-game in FF8, and being disappointed I couldn't play it.

I'm not 10 anymore, and no longer into virtual pets, but was there anything worthwhile with this peripheral?

You already mentioned everything the pocketstation was good for.

For what it's worth, the FF8 PC release came with a Chocobo's Journey app that replicated the pocketstation tie in.

Well I found this cover art, but I have no idea what it's about.

RRT4 (US ver) lets you trade cars via IR on the pocketstation
A lot of games that did use it are JP only though.

Best retro review websites you know of?

No youtubers or HG101 please - both of them are cancerous and the latter is literally the IGN of retro video gaming.

moby games and game faqs - for the search functions, I don't read message boards
tasvideos.org, SGDQ/AGDQ speedruns on youtube
mamedb, proggetto emma
vimm.net, emucr - for emulator news
warosu - for the /vr/ archive :)
>>
>>2805110
Not really about retro game reviews, and there's no new content any more, but sydlexia.com has some decent articles on retro games. It focuses more on just retro games, tv and pop culture in general.

What makes HG101 retro IGN? I don't think anyone's paying them to make the retro games look better than they are. I'll agree that there needs to be more retro review sites though.

Previous thread(s) - >>2828308

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Are the PS1 Ace Combat games worth getting into? I've played the PS2 and PSP games and I'm craving more of them. Have they aged well?

>>
Man AC7 is going to be a disappointment.

Play Ace Combat 3 OP. Playing with a Negcon controller is a bliss.
>>
AC2 is a lot like AC4. AC3 is deep. Air Combat is harder and more arcadey.
>>
>>2851542
AC2 for the PS1 has an absolutely brilliant soundtrack, as does AC3. AC2 has a lot in common with AC4.

Project Nemo will be be finished soon and AC3's superior JP version translated.
