I thought Amy's look from back then was much better, the red on pink is too monotone for my tastes.

It's okay. Basically a lesser version of Fighting Vipers.

I can never remember how to perform special moves in this game

and yet I can never bring myself to set the game to Automatic.

I've also never played as Bark or Bean.

Just played through Sonic 2, it was always my favorite in the series and the only one I've ever played through to the finish

I think I'm gonna try to tackle Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles finally, which one is more fun to play all the way through? I haven't played either in over a decade

Also, Sonic games rating thread I guess

What game(s) are you really good at and what's your practice routine? How do you stay motivated? I've read Full Extent of the Jam, all the sirlin stuff, plenty of FGC articles, even some of Alex Kierkegaard's articles (Arcade Culture is a great essay in spite of its author) and I'm curious about people's strategies and philosophies.

Third Strike mostly. I'm always playing that and a second fighting game I'm usually switching between. Like, I would try to get good at kof 98, then grow up of it and try Real Bout, then Last Blade, Garou, Rival School... but Third Strike is the only one I never drop so my skills stay somewhat solid.
>How do you stay motivated?
I'm into fighting games. I have a brother. He's into fighting games. Now guess what.

Nice. Always loved fighters but never got any good at them. Never had a group to play with, tried to get one going in MvC2 when it hit XBL, I went 20-0 the first night and nobody wanted to play after that. Whoops.

Only game I ever got any good at was Pop'n Music, up to the level 40 mark anyway. I got into the music so much and the feeling of "playing" it that I just played for hours every day for at least a year.

First was better than the second.

I wish there was more strategy in the world building part, and it's quite short, but a fun game.
>>
Great concept, mediocre execution.
Everything about the game was a tad too simple. Still an enjoyable experience overall.

Second has way better action stages.

I never really hear people talk about this console.

Transbot is cool. I also used to play Hang On all the time too.

Yeah quite a few. It's library isn't on the same level as the NES, obviously, but it is a cool little system. Zillion, Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy III, Golden Axe Warrior, Sonic 1 (not just a port of the MD game) and SEGA's Disney games are all excellent and well worth owning.

These are always fun, don't think we've had one in a while.

Describe games you can't remember the names of, others will try and guess. Be as descriptive as possible.

This game has the absolute worst fucking beginning, jesus christ.

I picked it up since I started Lufia 1. Will play 2 after I'm done 1, but I wanted to test 2 out since I bought it. I played a bit of the beginning.

>go to shop
>get slapped by blue haired girl
>immediately able to play

Nice. Not sure what to do in town, but I save at the church and try to leave. This old man tells me to go to a southern dungeon, sure I'll do that. As soon as I get in, I go through the most atrocious fucking tutorial ever. This fucking half dead geezer wouldn't shut the fuck up about such obvious things. Is there where gaming started to go downhill? Why did they feel the need to go so in depth with the teachings? Lufia 1 plastered tutorials on the wall, and even if they were obscure, the game was not hard to understand.

Gonna go back to Lufia 1. Going to keep my file saved after that stupid dungeon in L2 so I don't have to go through that stupid tutorial shit again. What a fucking joke.

When will /vr/ ever get over this thing where they try and old game expecting it to blow every expectation out of the water and then make salty posts about how much it sucks when it doesn't?
>>
>>2803501
He'll probably stop it when people stop praising games as the second coming of Jesus. This is what happens when games get hyped. It's not unreasonable to expect a game to knock your socks off when it has a stellar reputation, which Lufia 2 does have.

A better question is when will people like you get over making contentless posts to complain?

Baraduke for sure, it's been one of my favorites since Namco Museum on PS1, but all it's known for now is that Baraduke got pumped up by DigDug and shot Mr.Driller out her vag.

How does /vr/ feel about the first Blood Omen? I got pretty far when it came out but never finished because I lost my copy while moving. Is it worth going back to? I mostly want closure but haven't bothered checking to see if it has aged well.

Great game. Both are good for the story but the first one has better gameplay imo.

Mechanically it's a decent Zelda imitator, much darker of course. I don't think the combat and dungeons are that interesting (puzzles are mostly just hitting switches and avoiding spikes) but it's got so much style it's still cool.

The voice acting for the first LoK is still GOAT in my book. I loved how there were voiceovers for every item, new enemy, major locations, and sometimes just as you're wandering around in the world.

>Everything that is top down+fantasy = Zelda clone!!
Stop this shit already.

recommend me a game like DQ2. I want a game with some non linearity in it but still with some clues. I also don't mind grinding a little bit. Also I want a game where if you wander the wrong way you get your ass handed to you by overpowered monsters. I heard every DQ from 3 on are linear and I have played 1 through 3 already. Would it be a good idea to try a wizardy or ultima game?

OP here I think DQ2 is my ideal game. Enough challenge and non linearity but still manageable , played it on NES 3 years ago. Ive tried FF4 and FF6 and I think they are shit
>>
Ultima sound like a good next step for you. I guess the games are more about exploring than fighting though so keep that in mind. Not sure Ultima is the series I am thinking of but if it is then leveling up actually end up hurting you in the long run as there is very little point in it.
>>
Wizardry is pure dungeon crawling. Ultima doesn't have much in the way of overwhelming enemies in the overworld.
Might and Magic might fit.

Retro games that you think had some interesting ideas that were never really seen again in future generations.

Pic is Sentient which was actually a pretty meh-tier RPG/Adventure game that came out in 1997. I've been looking at it again recently and its 'thing' was the player was able to communicate with pretty much everyone in the game (in a traditional sort of 'ask about X/Y' sort of way), but with a little facial expression in the bottom corner which let you go about your business in a jovial, sad, angry (etc) mood, which would have an effect on the NPC response. Every NPC would also do this, and the fucking nightmare fuel mid-90s character models would literally smile or frown at you depending on their demeanour.

Unfortunately the application was clunky as hell and reviewers at the time panned it. I've not seen many games attempt anything similar since.

I think the advent of 3D environments in games with the Saturn/N64/PS1 meant that it was a time of more scope for creativity as developers got to grips with what this new technology would actually mean for games. I also think we're going through something similar now with the availability of tools for basically any guy with a text editor and some coding knowledge to make an indie game.

Also Three Lions which came out around the time of World Cup 98. Different from FIFA and ISS Pro in that it did away with shit commentators completely and had the manager of your team shouting stuff on the sidelines. There were different languages for different teams, too (even though they only had around half a dozen phrases).

It was a kickass football game too. Since then FIFA has been the mold for pretty much every game in the genre and commentary is now mandatory, no matter how shit.
