Is there any trick to avoiding lightning strikes or is it pretty much dumb luck?
I've gotten pretty good at avoiding earthquakes, but lightning doesn't seem to have any kind of telegraph.

The scanner tells you how severe the light ing is before you land.
Before I get the lander upgrades I avoid anything with higher than like severity 3 its usually not worth the fuel/crew

Serious question: the Chrono Trigger cartridge I've had since the early 2000s says "Made in Mexico". Is this a bootleg?
It's normal for carts of that age. I had plenty of legit Genesis games stamped with "Made in Japan, assembled in Mexico" or the like. If you drive a Chevy or a Nissan it's likely it was assembled in Mexico too, haha.

So I have this old tv that I have no idea what to do with. It only picks up radio transmissions and static.
I was thinking of keeping it in case I ever pick up an Atari because it has the hooks in the back. So /vr/ what do you think I should do with it?

Unless you plan on using RGB/component you may as well use that tv. Composite isn't any better than RF. Get an RF modulator if you don't have an RF unit.

Why does the RetroN 5 and similar consoles have to emulate the mappers? They need to run from the cartridges anyway, so why not use the actual chips in the cartridge?

all the retron 5 does is pull the rom off the cartridge and emulates it
Because they aren't real consoles. The hardware emulates the console. Since their console only pulls the ROM data, they need to replicate the proper mapper or the game won't run.
