You know those macros that boards make. Like /v/ will have a 'patrician-core' and what have you. I wanna make a 'hard-core' one for /vr/, basically make a list of hard (but fair - mostly anyway) retro games. Games that if you beat you can be considered a decent player of video games. You can include a difficulty setting if you want for a specific game.
Unfortunately I can't shoop so hopefully somebody else will have to take the helm.
So what's it gonna be /vr/? What will be our 'Hard-Core' list? can be across all genres of course

Can someone tell me why Paladin's Quest is so highly praised on the Internet? I mean, maybe I'm just a pleb, but I genuinely don't see what's so unbelievably amazing about this game.
It probably was the first JRPG for a lot of people, which is usually the reason people overrate mediocre games like FFIV or Earthbound
I've never seen much praise for it though, as far as I am concerned people seem to agree it was mediocre at best

Contrary to what legitimate autists will say, people love different. This was "different" (read: new) to a lot of people as >>3329301 said.
When casuals played videogames in ye olden days, they weren't expecting deep stories or varying choices. You just jump/shoot on enemies and get points. The first "complex" game these people come across they will praise heavily as some huge milestone in gaming, which is why "timeless classics" like Earthbound become so overrated.
So yes, it's just people going "Look at this new toy! It's got more buttons than the older toys!" and thinking it's the best game ever.

Say I'm on OSX and I want to modify some .n64 ROMS, simple stuff like replacing textures and soundfiles. What are my options?
I would probably do a search at romhacking.net. I'm an OS X user myself, but you might want to use a VM for that kind of thing, Windows has a lot more ROM editing utilities available for it.

Is the snes mini valuable? I found this snes jr at about 30 dollars. I already have a normal ntsc snes.

Playing through it for the first time, seems like a great game. Feels like spells don't scale very well though, early on, my casters were rekking most mobs before they could even reach me, now, at level 11, they pretty much buff and debuff, and the melee classes do the bulk of the damage. Some of the enemies are extremely rage inducing. Umpani trackers are capable of killing some weaker characters in a single round, forcing a lot of savescumming.
Fuck Wiz8. I despise any RPG with level scaling in it.
