Hey /vr/ I purchased Mischief Makers on N64 today. While testing it, I saw the game has a gorgeous sprite based style just from the intro, and it's a perfect example of why we needed more 2D games in the 5th generation of consoles. I feel like gen 5 is the perfect sweet spot for 2D games - consoles like the saturn and n64 were capable of 3D, but when they stayed in 2D, the result was for some gorgeous games; unfortunately developers solemn left in the safe zone that was 2D games. Symphony of the Night, Yoshi's Story, & Guardian Heroes are some notable examples. Post some 2D games from the 5th generation worth playing.

There's tons of great looking 2D games on Saturn and PSX. The N64 is really the only console that had a vast majority of 3D games.
>>
I don't have much to add but thanks OP. I agree completely. Mischief Makers and Guardian Heroes are two of my favorite games of all time. Treasure really made the best games.

A game which has all the fun sucked out of it by its bullshit difficulty. I could only ever beat the tomato-hucking level.

Wait, I just realized I'm talking about Virtual Bart. But what I said applies to that game too. Both the SNES Simpsons games are pretty awful.

That was Virtual Bart.

Sega updated all of their MD/Genesis games on Steam to launch from a 3D hub designed to look like a 1990's bedroom. More than that, they've added Steam Workshop support, meaning people can upload "mods" (i.e. romhacks).

https://steamcommunity.com/app/34270/workshop/

So far, most of them are just garbage sonic hacks, but somebody figured out that you can just upload an entirely different ROM and call it a "mod", even if that game isn't for sale on Steam. Currently, Contra Hard Corp is listed as a mod for Sonic the Hedgehog.

I would never pay for ROMs, but maybe this will help popularize romhacking and inspire people to get into it.

Whenever you buy a physical game you're paying for a ROM.

Lets have another of these threads aye?

So best bargain I think I've ever received. Picked-up 3 Sega Saturns (3 boxed one slightly broken), all PAL of course (Live in Australia) for 150. Guy throws in all his old games too, didn't complain just took them home. Inside were, Nights into dreams, ALL of the Panzer Dragoon games a few platformers. All for under the price you pay for a single boxed Saturn in Aus.
Any recommended titles other than whats listed /vr/?

Sorry that should read 2 boxed on broken

Sega'sconsoles were huge in Brasil in the 90s, i miss those days.

I got a box of around 15 NES games at a garage sale in 2009 for $3.50. Some of the games included Contra, Double Dragon, Double Dribble (CIB), Duck Hunt, Kung Fu, and Elevator Action. I only had had a few NES games at the time so this really jump started my collection.

I personally likes the remake better, even though the nostalgic part of my brain tries to override that.
>>
Original all the way

Until 3DS is playable on my computer
>>
I generally like the remake. The original was too dark sometimes in the dungeons. I remember getting stuck in the forest dungeon because I didn't find half of the exits in the center room.

The remake could have been less cartoony, but the 3DS can't deliver realistic graphics like the N64 could at the time.

I missed using the old inventory screen too.

I just tried playing Ultima 9 for a bit. It was, well, not great. How the hell did this series get 9 games?
54 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Because they were fucking great until 8 came out. That was okay, then 9 sucked.

Fuck off.
>>
Because every game sold more than its predecessors.
You might be asking why they stopped after 1999 and the answer is EA.
>>
What's a paladin?

Well I finally got to the end of Space Harrier on 1 credit and killed the super special hidden 3DS-only end boss.

Which is the next best thing to Space Harrier? Because maybe it's time I played a different game a bit.

1) Space Harrier 2? Seems too choppy

2) Star Fox? Seems too slow

3) Galaxy Force? Seems too hard

4) Master System Space Harrier? I'm waiting for the 3DS one

Also is it possible to blow up that big ship in pic related? And what's up with that one robot that start grey but then it turns into a blue robot?

>>
They ought to do a 3DS version of Space Harrier 2, like they did with Fantasy Zone 2. The levels were solid, but the mega drive just couldn't really handle the game
>>
Night Striker is a pretty good choice, and I believe the first 3ds collection of 3d classics that got a physical release in Japan had Space Harrier 3D as a bonus game
>>

Try Super Thunder Blade, After Burner II.
You could try Panzer Dragoon

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Me? I would say around 2006. I got the Wii at launch, and that would remain the most contemporary home console I would ever get (never got the HD twins). Never got any DS or PSP games past 2007 (with the exceptions of the DS Chrono Trigger port and borrowing Kirby Super Star Ultra from a friend).

I did end up getting the 3DS, but I only own around eight games for it.

During the second half of last generation, when I got the Wii, is when I started looking more and more toward the past because contemporary stuff was interesting me less and less (Wii itself was basically just a continuation of the Cube, so I was fine with it). I got lots of titles off the Wii's Virtual Console and PSP's PSone Classics.

I also bought Super Nintendo games, PlayStation 1 games, Game Boy Advance games, single Nintendo 64 (Dr. Mario 64 of all things), a single NES game (Zoda's Revenge), a single Game Boy game (Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters) off of ebay during the HD twins generation.

Prior to my slide retro fagdom, I used to buy NES and a few SNES games from GameStop during the the first half of the last decade. I also got the Virtual Boy of all things.

I like old shit, and I can't talk with anyone my age because all the normies are getting married or having full time jobs, and all the people who still play games grew up playing games with a high definition than my TV. Freaking Wii is the most recent thing I have, and no one in the wild has played that in years, and the only ones playing the 3DS still are those that play Waifu Emblem 1 and 2 and other animu shit.

So when did you become a retro fag and why did it happen to you? How do you cope with the fact that almost no one likes playing or discussing oldshit in the real world?

I was playing some PSX games on my PS3 and noticed they seemed to look like garbage, I tired hooking it up to an old CRT I had and it looked significantly better. I don't know much about this stuff, how can you tell which consoles will look like shit on an HDTV? PS2, Dreamcast, and Xbox seem to look fine to me... is it basically just any console before that generation?
