Why isn't it more well loved?

It's unfortunately one of those games that is doomed to be forever obscure.
>>
it ain't even that good,
>>
It is quite loved, although in a very niche way.
Probably it's bigger problem is the lack of a U/E release, even if now we have the extremely well done hack from Aeon. Another thing is that it's stories are short and won't shine that bright on their own.

But it is very well loved within it's niche of less known famicom releases.

So, i want to update my MAME installation to the latest one, ive been using build 0.131 for years because i just didnt want the hassle of updating and checking ROM versions and all that shit.

But now i wanna try some of the new games that dont work on the version im using so i need some advice here.

Whats the easiest, quickest, safer way of checking if the ROMs i have are co0mpatible with the latest MAME build, and then how can i remove the ones that wont work so i can download them again? i did a manual check and in the latest build im missing around 100 games from the list, obviously i have those games since they are showing on my old build and i can play them fine.

How can i achieve this without doing it manually and checking if the ROM sets just changed their names ?

Get yourself RomCenter. Point it at the latest version of mame you have installed(currently 0.173). It will build a .dat file. Once it's finished(will take time), point it at your rom directory, and let it do it's thing. It will fix/rename stuff as needed, provided you actually have the needed files. It will also tell you 99% of the time if you are missing any needed files for a game.(Doesn't always catch missing BIOS files, like for SF Rush) For "current enough" roms that are mostly compatible with the current set, download whatever you need from edgeemu.

Personally I prefer merged romsets where every single variant and bootleg of a rom is in a single .zip, but you may prefer to go split.
>>
>>3185259
Wheres a good place to get the roms with all variants?
>>
>>3185267
The only place I know that distributes merged romsets is pleasuredome. I'm making my own with RomCenter.

Retro Games that most surprised you and excited you for the future? Either innovative or just showed a totally new perspective on a genre that you haven't seen yet.

Pitfighter. Photographic sprites made me think video games could be totally real.

In 1994 I got a 3do, I played total eclipse and road rash. People were playing super metroid and final fantasy VI and I was playing 3d games. And sure, I also played final fantasy, super metroid I played much later (fantastic). But yeah, 3d games with cd quality soundtracks. Sure, the 3do sucked balls on hindsight, but if it was 1994 and you saw one your inner kid would wet their pants.

Full Throttle. It was like playing trough an actual 2D animated cartoon!
Then, shortly after, the 3D craze happened with all its blocky brown and bloom and both 2D gaming and the animation world suffered.
I liked it better when things were more varied and of higher standard on the 2D front.

This thread is dedicated to those among us who are actively working through a series they neglected growing up. DISCLAIMER: Not my image. I know some are missing.

I am working through Final Fantasy. I am on #5, just starting, right now. Having an emulator that supports fast forward is ESSENTIAL, I feel.

I want to hear what series other people are working through in order, since you're all old-bros here, and are able to undertake long adventures, such as Dragon Quest, etc.

I just started Breath of Fire last night because my friend gave me his copy of Dragon Quarter, and I realized I'd never played any in the series.

The localization on the first one is pretty terrible. However, I hear that they get increasingly better as the series goes on.

I just beat the second boss, who was actually moderately difficult, and now I'm trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do next. It's grind heavy, but I like to watch movies while I grind in these old JRPGs.

I'm going to play Rogue Galaxy after I finish this series, then I'm going to play through another series. Probably Dragon Quest or the Persona series.
>>
>>3184927
The grindiness is super abated by a fastforward button in your emulator. The PSP emulator for Android has one, and it means you can turn on auto, watch TV, and just hit X over and over again to farm and grind.

The translations is a big issue, though. For example, when Playing FF2, I had the choice of about 20 different fan translations. I went with the official PSP port in the end. FF2 was my favorite BTW...

I've never done any Breath of Fires. Are they different from the DQ/FF genre in any meaningful way?
>>
>>3184927
Breath of Fire 2's official localization is pretty bad.

After finishing my second playthrough of DQ1 I decided to give this a go. I loved Dragon Warrior 1 (played it first on GBC then on NES.) It's a simple, but very functional open RPG that allows you to wander and dick around all you want...but I can't get into this game.

The party system, while it's cool, just adds so much unnecessary tedium to the game. In the first game, if you ran into monsters that you out-classed by a long shot, you could finish the battle in two button presses and move on, getting the gold, xp and most importantly not interrupting your exploration, which is what made the game so great in the first place. In DW3 if you backtrack you have to fight 7 slimes or 4 ravens and 3 slimes, which just means 2 or 3 minutes of menu shuffling and text scrolling until you defeat them. You can't walk 2 or 3 squares without triggering a battle either so you are pretty much always in combat, shuffling through menus. It makes exploration a lot less appealing and a lot less fun, which is a shame because from what I've seen the world is like 10 times bigger than the first game. Not to mention the whole thing where you select a monster that's already been killed and your character just attacks thin air. What a waste of time. Does the game get better? do you get spells that can attack multiple monsters at once, is there a way to deal with large groups of low powered enemies easily? or should i just say fuck it and try a different game. I like the aesthetic of jRPGs, I just don't like how they waste your fucking time for no reason. Are there any other jRPGs that are kind of similar to the first Dragon Warrior, where you can wander about on your own and not get bogged down with tedium.

If I don't like DWIII are any of the other Dragon Warrior/Quest games worth playing? Kinda bummed because I really enjoyed the first one
>>
I only have experience with the GBC version of DQ3, but mechanically this should be the same. Boomerangs will hit all enemies you see, while whips will hit all enemies of a certain group, which can definitely let you deal with weak enemies really fast, depending on your level. You also do get spells later that allow you to hit all enemies, but I haven't played too far into it so I'm not sure how many different spells there are. But if you really have to try a different game I suggest 8, and possibly even waiting for the 3DS release of 8. I found exploration in 8 very rewarding, plenty of treasure to find, lots of difficult enemy encounters you can find just walking around in the overworld, and the combat goes by pretty fast in 8 too. The 3DS port which comes out later this year in the west takes away random encounters tho, so if you think they can get a bit annoying that should help as well.
>>
>>3184658
Play the SNES or GBC remakes, they address your complaints by automatically retargeting if an enemy is dead and adding whips and boomerangs, which attack a group of enemies and all enemies. There are AoE spells in the original, but it takes awhile to get them.

Go to fantasyanime to grab the FFV GBA version with the sound restoration prepatched. No load times, best localization and extras as well. Enjoy, and remember that you're not having fun unless you're breaking the game and mastered all the jobs.

Anyone else prefer Gran Turismo 1 over 2, even though GT2 is way more complete?

>more stable framerate, resulting in a smoother experience
>much better music (PAL, US, JP version, you name it)
>way less grindy, better flow advancing through the game
>prizes felt more sensible and balanced, given that events were presented in a mini-GP format, instead of gifting you a mega-expensive car for winning just one race
>even though it lacks many non-japanese cars, most western cars in GT2 were suboptimal given how ridiculously expensive they were compared to japanese cars
>it's me, or does GT1 feature better physics? car feels a lot better to drive and don't feel on the limit like in GT2 (it might be that GT2 overuses that brake sound). I don't know what it is, but I enjoy racing more than in GT2
>looks less ugly, GT2 went overboard with blurry textures and the new circuits lacked aesthetical taste (looking at you, tahiti road)
>3 licences vs 5(+1), making less of a bore to start a new save
>IA doesn't act as if you weren't there. God, GT2 have the worst IA of all time, cars crash into you all the time.
>you can skip replays and load times are better
>Hi-Fi mode

IMO GT1 is the better videogame, while GT2 is a better experience for car lovers. Do you agree?

Now I feel kinda bad I went straight into GT2 because everyone talked about 2 and it seemed to be the kind of sequel that one ups the original in every way.

Fuck.

All Gran Turismo games are shit. Too "realistic" to be fun. I'm sorry but I don't want to have to actually be a professional race driver to be able to play this anal shit.

>one wheel touches some grass for < 1sec
>you may as well give up because you've lost the race even if you were a third into lap 1

Also: for all its "realism" check out that damage! Make your mind up - is this a "realistic" game or not? Because I hit a wall at 80mph and the car was fine.

I'm drawing a complete blank on being able to find anything out about this game, has anyone here played it all?
There's nothing on YouTube, a few eBay sellers have it and there's no translated versions on any ROM sites.
Also, should I care? If anyone has played it, is it any good?
