The jumping in this game is fucked.
I played for about 40 minutes and every single death was from not pulling off a double jump. This stage in particular with the waterfalls, but also on the alleys after it. I don't think I have ever seen a jumping mechanic that needed to be timed so precisely. Even fighting games don't require such frame perfect accuracy. I can beat Shinobi 3 with no problem but this is kicking my ass for all the wrong reasons.

It's second nature after a while
or PROTIP: use that jumping magic, it makes you jump high for the rest of the level
>999 shurikens

lol what a casual little shit
Was it really that bad?
It wasn't great. It wasn't just this ad but this ad made it even more apparent that he was kind of testing on his laurels and didn't have the same artistic drive and vision on this project.
>>3083619
At best, it's incredibly mediocre. At worst it's a broken mess.
The gameboy port/spinoff is pretty fun, though, it's a totally different game.
>>3083678
I think that Episodes 2 and 3 are legit great.
Episode 1 is an abomination (except for Episode 1 DM, where it's fantastic), while Episode 4 is the definition of "mixed bag".
I've been playing some cool retro games for the last few days and am on Final Fantasy. And what the fuck is this green stuff. Is it supposed to be grass? bushes? slime? srsly
>>3082814
it's a gigantic bed of moss. it's going to destroy the world unless you defeat chaos and the fiends.

That's actually the plot to a non-/vr/ game that I like a whole lot called 7th Dragon.
Does anyone else feel like Super Mario World was a little too generous with 1-ups?
>>3081717
The problem started with SMB3.
>>3081717
Well, it's one of those Mario games where getting a game over can actually undo some of your progress - unless you obsessively rerun ghost houses to save every time you pass a level.
Generally speaking the difficulty of SMW is largely quite low, save for the extra stages. A skilled enough player will probably be able to beat the regular game without needing to pick up any free 1up shrooms and just getting by with 100 coin freebies, so perhaps the fact that they're there at all is being overly generous....

They were playing with things, trying to find a balance between bullshit and fun.
My favorite place to grab a bunch of lives was on top of Vanilla Dome, there was a level where you got a grey p-switch that turned all these koopas into sliver coins. You could get like 60 lives in a couple minutes.
Why is this game so perfect?
It's not. SRPGs are total snorefests.
>n64
into the trash it goes
Got this game for my birthday. Got bored to tears after just 20 minutes of playing it. Traded it for DK64. I don't care if OB64 is an uncommon & pricey game today, I don't regret that trade one damn bit.
So I just checked out the website for the first time in months and apparently it's out now. You can buy the PS-IO for $150AUD.
http://ps-io.com/store/psio-cartridge/
It's a bit pricey and requires soldering shit to the board before it'll work, but I still want one. I just don't want to spend that much for one. Has anybody bought one?
Alternatively, if you want to store a collection of PS1 image files and play them "authentically," the next best thing is modding a PS3 with custom firmware and using software that allows you to...

>Sony's official PS1 emulation, so it's a step up from kids who emulate PS1 games on their computer.
Are you implying that in-house emulators are guaranteed to be -better- than independently developed emulators? That is not the case; Mednafen has higher compatibility than Sony's own PS3-emu or the PS2 sofware emulation layer and that's a fact.
Regarding PSIO, I still have mixed feelings. Some say it's super great and others not so much. I don't know...

Only for selected pre orders.
Is memorizing the level cheating? If you know what happens every step of the way it is boring and no longer a game. Memorization isn't true game skill.
ITT: 6th genner plays a retro game for the first time.

ITT: People who can't actually refute that most retro games are all memorization so they just throw insults.
What are some spiritual successors to Quake 1, seeing as Quake 2 failed in all regards as a sequel?
Mods and unofficial sequels are acceptable.
Unreal.
>>3078335
Wasn't there some really well-made total conversion made from Quake that was almost like a whole new game?
>>3078356
There was Malice, a commercially released total conversion. I thought it was awesome when it was new, but really it's not as good as the original Quake.
Do you also consider the NES/Master System as the dark ages of gaming? No the eras before that weren't the dark ages, those were even worse, those were bronze and prehistoric ages.
I skipped them completely because I consider them irrelevant. I started with the NES era. I played about 80% percent of the relevant NES library and I despise them.
It was no fun playing them. It was torture. Okay 5-6 titles were fun. But that was about it. Mostly it was hell. Now I focus on the SNES era the and then after the PS1/N64 era - the one true eras - and I feel so relieved....

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.

City?
Please forgive me for not knowing what I'm really talking about but the picture on my Trinitron is tilted slightly, just enough that it's noticable. Is this normal or should I look into fixing it somehow?
On another note am I always supposed to see overscan in stuff like Genesis games or is that unusual too? Once again I'm sorry for sounding like an idiot.
Revisionist history time gents. If you're born after 92/93 don't bother coming in.
What bothers you the most?
>The 5th generation invented 3d
Is the one that gets me.
No one who has ever played the first Starfox game believes that.
5th gen is when 3d became more plausible for platformers and stuff though.
Everything about the Saturn and 3D. People who think that 3D was added because they were afraid of Sony, that it's an afterthought and that it sucks at doing 3D, that the best parts of its library are all 2D games, etc...
>>3060074
I hear it a lot when I'm talking to casual players and the subject comes up. Generally when I say I'm not into indie games since they usually like to talk about them.
It comes up on /vr/ all the time too when someone says 5th generation is the start of modern games too.
If you could only own 10 genesis games, what would they be?
