I received a box of old games today from my brother, containing an old Korean Genesis among other things. I thought you guys might like to take a look.

Shot of the bottom. I don't know what the cover on the side is supposed to be protecting, and I don't want to force it.
It feels kind of cheap and light, but I've never held an actual Genesis so I can't compare it.

Games like Warlords 2? I used to play one back in 1994-95 but can't for the life of me remember the name. It was very similar but the units were different.

I remember capturing certain cities and using them to build highly defensive bug/beetle-like units. If they were defending a city it was really hard to take it. It's possible they were Warlords 2 spiders since it was over 20 years ago and I can't remember much else.

Love this game but it plays like absolute shit on Archive.org. A shame because it's a great one.

What are some retro games that have famous musicians in them?

Picture related is Gak, who stars in Final Fantasy VIII.

Why is the NES so highly regarded? Especially among hipsters? It’s equal or usually inferior to the Famicoms in every way but game carts being able to be taken apart easier.

Is it a left over from the 90s like a lot of retro myths? I used to like the NES till the 2000s when I learned more about Famicoms.

The cart connectors sucks. It’s just plain terrible. A neat novelty at best.

The controllers are uncomfortable and inferior to the Famicom and Famicom/NES dogbone.

The NES consoles takes AC and has the rectifier circuit inside the console. Terrible design that causes excess heat and poor efficiency. From someone that mods these pieces of shit it’s a bitch to get at the caps in this circuit since they’re incased in a metal shielding box.

Then you have sound difference. A game like Zelda II sounds completely different on the Famicom disk system.

The famicom looks like a cheap piece of shit.
>>
>>3258482
Because it is, duh.
>>
>>3258467

Because the people you're talking about grew up in the west, so they had an NES and therefore their memories and nostalgia are tied to it, you goddamn idiot. They don't care about the Famicom because they're not enthusiasts.

At last we've plumbed the depths of this nigh unfathomable mystery. We can go home, and rest easy.

Is there any hidden gem that not even japan discusses it? Or games that never get a (fan) translation are not even worth?

I played Fire Striker with a friend and it's kinda fun. It's like breakout except instead of controlling a paddle, you control a character who can walk around and the maps of course are more complex.
>>
>>3258142

Yeah Fire Striker is sick.
>>
For which system? A lot early computer games were innovative for the time and were received well by fans and critics, but are rarely discussed today. Betrayal at Krondor, for example.

Does anyone here really like Mortal Kombat 4, as in they highly regard it as a really good game?

I'm sort of meh about it. It should have had more classic characters, in my opinion.

I had it for the PS1 and played quite a bit in order to get all endings and get familiarized with the characters but I'm also meh about it.

As far as 2D to 3D transitions go it wasn't bad but didn't set the world on fire either, it's squarely in the middle.

My interest with the MK series was at the lowest with MK4.

It went like this for me:

MK: I'd hear kids at school talk about it because of the violence but didn't pay much attention, I was into SFII mainly.
MKII: by the time MKII released I was hyped and found the gameplay and fatalities to be better than that of the first game. Became a huge fan of MKII and would play religiously every day, I also remember lots of kids came to my house to play it because I was the first one at school who got it.
MK3: I was hyped as fuck but when it came out it was a bit disappointed, still fooled me into thinking it was at least as good as MKII, at the very least I had a lot of fatalities, animalities, etc to learn and in the end I still had fun with it.
UMK3: things started to get clusterfucky with the franchise. Still a cooler version of MK3 with more characters and the return of scorpion.
MKTrilogy: It was like ice cream mixed with steak. It was good to have all the characters in one game but something didn't feel right.
MK4: must have played it only a couple times, I gave MK a last chance but it failed to hold my interest.

Where can I get cheap games in europe?

I've seen lots of thrifting and dumpster diving in the US, but is there such a thing in europe?

My brother tells me there's trading at GAME stores, but I'm looking for cheaper stuff.

Any fleamarkets or thrift stores to recommend?

I'll be mostly in the barcelona area, with some excursions to best europe for bitches and chernobyl (yes, I'm doing the stalker thing)

We're screwed, our best bet is to look at some local websites, otherwise it's straight to ebay or other international sites.

I once bought a Super Nintendo plus ten games and a Sega Master System plus eight games for five euros from a British expat thrift shop near a big British Army NAAFI in Germany. Quite frankly I should have gone back there again and bought everything because it was ridiculously cheap.

I don't believe video games age, however it seems whenever a new improved games of the same series is released, people put the former game away and focus mostly on the new game, like Mario Bros. was to SMB, or SMB to SMB3, or Wolfeinsten to Doom, or Smash 64 to Melee(Although this one isn't retro).

>>
If the new version does indeed surpass the prequel with certain "objective" improvements (I would classify graphical improvement as subjective, since you're dealing with aesthetics in that regard, but improved controls, fixing a bad camera, improving the frame rate, etc would qualify as objective improvements, I think), I would say the prequel is "dated." Doesn't mean that game isn't worth playing.

That said, I'm also in the camp that a great game doesn't "age." Some games just nailed it, and the sequels are simply a new coat of paint on the old formula. Tetris, Robotron, Defender, Ms. Pac-Man, Doom 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Wipeout XL, Super Mario Brothers 3, Link to the Past, Contra come to mind as games which had sequels that didn't really "improve" on the experience and fun factor of the preceding releases.

Doesn't mean the sequels aren't worth playing nor does it mean the sequels are inherently worse games, just that you can easily jump between the games and not think one is "dated" compared to the other.
>>
>>3255982
Do you expect people to play the same thing over and over when there's new versions coming out or something? Even if there weren't improvements just new levels or whatever people would still play the new games because they got sick of playing the old ones. And since there usually are improvements it's a no brainer. Or I guess a small brainer because the guy with no brain can't figure that out.

Why was the SID chip for C64 so fucking God tier awesome?

It's too bad the SID was grossly misused by Yuropoors who made fart wave chiptunes. I do wish more game music had sounded like this.

If I remember correctly there is a mod available for the pc version that restores the original graphics. Under the hood the game is literally just the GBA version though, it actually contains the rom data of that game.

""Final Fantasy VI is sort of unique compared to the other Final Fantasys on Steam," said modder Christopher Cooper, who goes by the handle Krisan Thyme online. "Square actually have a copy of the original Final Fantasy VI inside the Steam release of Final Fantasy VI, and what they do is reference the original copy as a database to pull information such as cutscenes, where sprites are located, how the map is constructed, item stats, AI. It references all the stuff out of the original game, pulls it out, and constructs it in the new engine. It's pretty cool stuff, honestly."

if you go to the romancing saga 2 thread/SaGa general you'll find other people are playing it RIGHT NOW even

anybody here bought one of these? 35 bucks seems ridiculously low. i've been looking around for a jamma compatible cabinet for a while and i've found one roughly in my price range. might pick this up for metal slug, dodonpachi, etc if anyone's had positive experiences.

DOSbox.

Some are good enough to move games from floppies and CDROMs to drives and images, configure for the specific game, and make adjustments to execution speed as needed for optimum play.

The rest of us go out and get it from someone else who has already done all the work.
