video game budget 2.jpg
76 KB,
For a long time I've been playing only retro games. I thought it was just nostalgia.

But I realized I was right all along. Look at the chart. This was made in 2005. GTAV cost $265 mln. Destiny cost $500 mln. Great games used to cost under $1 mln to develop. Video games cost more than movies now.

Video games went from small studios with ideas to Hollywood level blockbusters where any step away from the formula is considered death. Thank you, I'd rather play Heroes of Might and Magic III all over again.

The video game industry now has more money involved in it than the movie industry.

I remember when I first got my 360 and after a while realized what a huge step down most games were with a few gems here and there. I haven't kept up with modern gaming at all since, there's still an almost endless amount of games I've never played, why continue being a good goy when I can just drink from the endless fountain of free roms and emulators

OP here. Are you me? Exactly this. X360 killed it for me.

1. Top Hunter, Roddy and Cathy

The incredibly lush backgrounds, the foreground/background alternating gameplay (Never seen that done anywhere else except Wario land VB) and the sheer variety of gameplay. Mechs! Guns! Arm stretching! Pogo sticks! Levers that drop rocks on enemies! Power mode! etc. Huge stage variety too

2. Crossed Swords

What other third person over the shoulder 2D beatemups even exist? Satisfying combat, a different magical spell for every stage (with wildly different effects like turning enemies into scarecrows) and gorgeous environmental...

King of Fighters '98
>cast, fighting engine

Metal Slug
>just plain awesome, more fast paced and straight forward than the sequels also easier

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
>awesome combo system, awesome cast, awesome fighting engine

The only one that HAS to be in my top 3 is KOF 98. I could probably switch either of the others out with Garou or Metal Slug 3.

I don't like fighting games even a little bit. Arguably Neo Geo isn't the platform for me. But it really did have a number of brilliant, creative little games outside of the fighting genre.

What is your favorite retro video game soundtrack? I think Final Fantasy VI has the best soundtrack in all of gaming.

In the basement if you remember there is a locker where you get to choose between a machinegun and 2 more inventory slots.

What you don't pick up carries over for the B scenario with the other character. I recommend not opening that locker and leaving both for the B scenarios.

Press X everywhere, there are tons of hidden ammo that you don't see on screen.
>>
Don't kill every enemy, it's a waste of time. Just run around them. Don't bother carrying a bunch of health items unless you really need them, the game throws health at you a lot.

Save the magnum for bosses, use the shotgun on everything else and ditch the handgun for the shotgun around the time you get the magnum.

If you hear a licker (rattly breath, sounds like Butthead) walk and you won't trigger it. Otherwise run, they're literally no threat until the lab where you're in a tight corridor.

Claire sucks.

127 KB,
Masters of Monsters (pic related) is a game I enjoy watching more than actually playing. Just set all players to CPU and it usually takes the game a few hours to sort itself out.

Are there any other retro games with demonstration or CPU vs. CPU modes like this?

Tried it. It's so damn ugly. And I find the capture the towers mechanic boring. Ogre Battle had more variety, though it was more of an early RTS.

Why are System Shock and Deus Ex such amazing games?

Because Spector produced SS which was made my MIT graduates, and because Eidos and Romero gave him as much time and money needed to make his dream game. That doesn't happen very often.

Because they are games first, not interactive narratives

Is this the Epic Mickey thread?

PS1 is MIDI?

803 KB,
Every now and again a thread will pop up about Super Mario 64 that is about your memories of playing the game when you were young. One recurring theme in these threads is the "feel" of the game. Usually people felt uneasy or even scared of certain parts. Other people dream about it to this day. I know I do.

I think this strange, dream-like feeling comes from the contrast of realistic stuff with unrealistic. Mario clutches his ass and leaps in the air when he's burned. In contrast, he clutches his throat and floats to the surface when he drowns. There are...

I cannot tell you how many times I completed that game. I never got tired of it, and even now, if I could find a N64 controller that would have a completely fucking shot analog stick, I would play it right now (I have it on DS, too, but I can't adapt to the controls. I could get it on WiiU, but I'm not sure how that would be). It was my first truly 3d game, and I love it immensely. Got it when it came out, my grandmother bought it for me and it was one of the best presents I ever got.

102 KB,
I tried so hard to like it. But after 15 hours, I just can't do it anymore. This game is so frustrating.

I understand mostly how the system works. And in fact I specialized 8 weapons, 1 for every affinity (minus Physical). Maybe that's not the mlg pro optimal way to do it, but it worked pretty well since bosses went down very, very fast. But the way combat works can be very tedious, having to slowly and constantly go in the menu sometimes depending on the area. Going through normal areas became such a damn slog.

I respect the game (amazing graphics,...

I hated this game when it came out. A few years later I bought it on the cheap after PS2 came out because it was one of the ps1 games that took advantage of the PS2's smoothing textures and I thought I'd give it another go. I hated it. I just didn't "get" how the game worked and hated games that I had to use strategy guides on.
>>
The problem is that you're trying to "respect" a video game. You either enjoy it or you don't, how hard is it to understand that?
>>
>>3350514

I liked aspects of it which is why I persevered, but ultimately I didn't like it overall which is why I stopped playing.
