So I saw this port of Cave Story to the Sega Genesis the other day, and I was pretty impressed with how someone managed to get a game from 2004 running on a console from the 80s.
And it got me wondering, are there any other examples of non-retro games being ported to retro consoles? This kind of thing is fascinating to me
>>3350082
Retro City Rampage can both be downloaded and played in DOSbox, or the developer sells a version on floppies that can be played on an authentic 486 MS-DOS machine. He's also working on a version for the NES. I would get links but this info isnt hard at all to find. Retro City Rampage came out in late 2012.
>>3350082
jesus why does every 'retro styled' modern game have way worse pixel art than actual retrogames.
its like they arent even trying
>>3350112
because they don't have the budget to hire proper artists
And I'm talking about absolutely obscure games. Pic related, Valhalla.
I found this in an old brazilian magazine CD full of demos.
Developed by Anarchy Enterprises, who now develops shitty mobile games, Valhalla (beta) is a pretty simplistic and incomplete fighting game based around the nordic pantheon of gods. The game features hand-drawn graphics, blood and "fatalities".
I can't found a single mention of this game in the interwebs.
>>3348604
There are many games totally lost to time, some that aren't even on google or some that only pull up a few links on google if that.
Oh, I found a mention of Valhalla in this list.
http://retro.icequake.net/numbers/www.seven7seven.com/f176-200.htm
Although labeled as a "beat'em up", Valhalla is a traditional fighting game and not a belt scroller.
>>3348604
There are probably hundreds of freeware and shareware games from the 90s that have no record whatsoever of them anymore. Possibly thousands. And then there's all the games from the 80s that people programmed in BASIC.
What keeps them from doing another fun game like that?
Harvest Moon 64 was better.
>>3348583
I agree. It felt more seamless? BTN seems very clunky in comparison, and slow as hell. I liked being able to cook but at times BTN almost felt like it had too much to offer. 64 was maybe more 'barebones' in the selection of crops and such, but it worked much better IMO.
>>3348572
What keeps who?
Has there ever been a better device for /vr/ than the wii with homebrew installed?
yeah
the actual hardware, retard
>>3348358
I don't know man having the entire game library for each classic console along with this controller is pretty dope.
>>3348358
>Wii
>Play the majority of every /vr/ game ever made for free
>Console
>Play maybe a few hundred games you have to buy from resellers
Classic series:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Mega man and Bass (Rock man and Forte); 9, 10 (> not retro)
Pocket: Dr. Wily's Revenge, II, III, IV, V (GB), Mega Man (GG), Rockman & Forte: Challenger from the Future (WonderSwan JP Only), Rockman Battle & Fighters (Neo Geo Pocket Color)
Not cannon: Mega man X Street Fighter [fun]
Mods and fan games:
Required to play:
4 Minus Infinity: colossal work, from remixed music from different NES titles and enemies from different mega man games to levels and bosses that will make you sweat hype. There are slopes, ok!?
Ultimate: completely new game, may as well have been made by Capcom (except good haha), easily up there with 9 and 10
7 FC and 8 FC: make 7 and 8 into 8 bit gold with 9 in mind. If you're wary of 8 (and there's not a whole bunch of reasons), play the demake
Suggested to play:
3 BC: complete remake fasting the game's fastage to fastest fastility
5 AS: complete remake adding air slide
4 BCAS: baby of 3BC and 5AS - complete remake with super speed and air slide
Claw: hard as fuck, but graphics is shitty in places
2 Ultra: since 2 is easy af
2 No Constancy
2: Deus Ex Machina
2: Function-9
In progress:
2.5D: the shit is gonna be huge
X series:
X1, X2, X3, X4; X5, X6, X7, X: Command Mission, X8
(Xtreme 1 and 2 on GBC)
Zero series:
Zero 1, Zero 2, Zero 3, Zero 4
Legends series (3D action/adventure):
Legends, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Legends 2
Battlenetwork series (real time RPG on GBA)
BN 1, BN Transmission (GC only), BN 2, BN3, BN4, BN5, BN6
FAQ:
> Where should I start?
1, unless you're 16-babby in which case consider X. Make your way onward.
> Does 8 suck?
It's mediocre at the very best for a mega man game, but it's still a shitload of fun. If shitty camera triggers you too much, play the demake, 8 FC. Good game.
> Are there gonna be demakes for Powered Up and Bass?
Doesn't seem to likely at all, in fact forget about it. Let's hope someone else picks up the idea and does it.
> I have autism and can't play mish-mash mods like MI, are there any games with integrity?
Ultimate should be your first choice, also play MM X SF and perhaps 3-5 BC-AS series as well.
> Series aside from Classic and X worth playing?
Eh...
> Anything "special" I wanna know about?
Mega man 8-bit Death match. Personally, I play every other evening.
Couple of levels for 2.5 already available: http://petersjostrand.com/index.php/faq
> Is Wily Wars worth playing?
If you simply can't miss anything classic mega man, there's a cheat code for instant access to Wily's Tower, original bit of WW. Aside from that, the port is shit. Music murdered, graphics below average like it's some C genesis title, buster doesn't even shoot right.
> What about Powered Up?
Graphics is controversial, but it's a fine remake with ability to play as robot masters. New ones suck though.
Also here's a vote for a favorite boss in 1. Guy intends on getting 500 votes and then moving on to 2, etc. http://www.strawpoll.me/10596784

Timeman from powered up is awesome. Fuck the haters
What are your thoughts on this game and the sequel?
Amazing game. I find it hard to go back to the originals now, just too old. But Commandos 2 will always be my favorite, still very playable today. C3 was cool but way to damn hard I found.
>>3345820
Commandos 2 is a 10/10 masterpiece. Very good games all of them.
>>3345820
I bought the trilogy years ago but never got around to playing them, should probably fix that
Previous thread >>3328580
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

So I finally figured out what the fuck was wrong with my old TV. Turns out I was only able to see half the spectrum of blue shades. Went into the service menu and had to crank up the blue cutoff, then adjust the red and green to get the colors right again. Now my blacks look gray, though. How fucked am I?
>>3345320
Adjust the brightness?
So I downloaded a massive pack of pre-patched english translated JP only SNES roms. Been going through and trying different games here and there to see what we never got. So how about a general thread for short reviews for english translated JP only games?
Tales of Phantasia is pretty good. The story is basic RPG + time travel, and the graphics are pretty as hell, but the main draw is the real-time battle system. Was having great fun with it, up until I got to the Sylph(sp) fight and couldn't attack half of them. I may need to read the manual.
Brandish 2. I remember messing around with the first one, and heard this one had SNES Mouse support, so I decided to give it a shot. Kinda didn't realize you start off with 1HP. Walked into an enemy, one-hit me. Came back to life where I saved, except all people and items are missing. Fell down a hole into a room full of enemies that 1-hit me. Keep reviving in the same room. This might be cool, if I could figure out what the fuck I'm supposed to do. Might restart and try again, but I'm not really impressed so far.
Tried the Kunio-Kun Dodgeball game, but I couldn't even figure out the controls, much less all the other shit involved in this one. Uses the Start button for pretty much everything, and every other button appears to be cancel. Who the hell thought this up?
Anyone else got any recommendations or reviews to share?
Seiken Densetsu 3, nigga
Glory of Heracles 3 tells a stellar story with rather simple mechanics
The scenario was planned by the guy who did FF7, so it has a dark sense of humor and good bouts of serious mind bending moments.
Don't do that to yourself.
Go the hard route and learn the language instead of fooling yourself with those "translations". You'll get a lot more out of it in the long run.
Enjoying physical media anons? Gamecube games are next in line
>physical media
As opposed to eternal magic media?
Even some of my cheap burnable discs are still in good shape.
>>3341178
Gee, sure is nice that my N64 uses carts.
Fuck this third stage
>>3339356
You just need to get used to it, man.
Which one is three? I got stuck on the one with the bridge. It's either three or four. Then stuff came up in life and I never got back to it.
Normally the game gives you an item if you past the stage in Grand master rank.
Which stage is it? that one where you have to cross an entire village? i don't remember much since it has been ages since i have played this.
Recent purchases thread? Pic related, the results of my trip to the used book store yesterday.
I've been looking for a copy of Arkanoid Doh it Again for nearly 15 years. I'm stoked to have finally snagged one.
I just bought my first retro console (NES). A friend of mine was selling it and I couldn't resist.
I don't have any games or even tv yet and I don't know where I should buy them (I live in central Finland) or where I even fit it in my small student apartment.
I'm stressed but happy.
>>3338760
Didn't your friend have games too?
>>3338760
Finnpoor here mongolbrethren, its HIGHLY unlikely you do to find any cheap retrogames from flee markets or anywhere nowadays, theres shitton of resellers who scavenge them through and charge ridicilous prices, but i recommend modding the console for ntsc and using ebay for much cheaper prices than within finland
Few absolute must havs for the NES
>mario 3
>ninja gaiden
>megaman 2
>guardian legend
Multiplayer fun
>chip & dale
>turtles 2-3 arcade games
>river city ransom
>contra
>bubble bobble
>bomberman 2
>nintendo world cup
>battletoads (hard as shit tough)
I still sometimes play this one.
Also stumpled upon the list the other day. So many memories
http://www.scofen.com/categories/best-nes-games
I never played that crappy console in the first place.
>>3326609
How old are you kid?
>>3326580
It's funny, I watch old games on YouTube all the time but it never occurred to me to play any of them. Are there any good ones on NES or GameCube or whatever?
Cool, fugly, gimmicky... just post 'em.
>>3310425
Tapper is actually a really fun game to play at the arcade, shame it gets so overlooked for the other "classics"
> A-B
> 1-2
> A-B-C
Simple sequence (NES, Master System, basic Genesis)
> A-B-C + X-Y-Z
Linked sequences (expanded Genesis)
> A-B,X-Y + L-R
> A-B-C,X-Y-Z + L-R
Linked sequences + position-based (SNES, Saturn)
> ■ -▲- ● - x + L-R (x2-3)
Glyph group without preconceived "order" + position-based sequences (PlayStation)
What's the best possible button labeling pattern, /vr/?
>>3359082
Atari.
>FIRE
> ■ -▲- ● - x + L-R (x2-3)
>Glyph group without preconceived "order" + position-based sequences (PlayStation)
the shapes clearly represent 1,2,3,4 and are arranged in snes order - right to left, bottom to top
>>3359082
>Glyph group without preconceived "order"
The PSX buttons still have a 1-2-3-4 order based on the number of lines that are used to create the symbols.
Thoughts?

No price known yet.
So it's like the Colecovision Flashback? Guess it all depends on how it runs but I don't see any real reason to buy it.
is this real fucking life?
