This one had a little plexi window/lighting setup that both simulated the laser and helped to aim.

Pretty neat and a big step up from trying to use the peep sight on Operation Thunderbolt, haha.

This is one of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. Looking at the inside, the electro-mechanical parts appear much less complex than a lot of pinball tables. It works like a Stylophone, and it doesn't look like the circuit layout is a hell of a lot more complex than a Stylophone either.

Not retro, but does anyone design new EM games like this?

Closest thing to a modern EM I've seen are Foosball tables with additional features (covered playground, annoying sound fx, automatic ball serving, LED score board, etc...).

They were a lot more prevalent in Japan before the fighting game craze, since a lot of arcade games were never available in dedicated cabinets unless they were a racing or gun shooting game. You only got the PCB and a few instruction sheets.

It's mainly about getting the video output right with a hack driver like crt_emudriver. Then you just need to use proper controls and write them up correctly and to avoid the temptation to run games that the hardware isn't powerful enough to run but MAME can easily be set to show you its frame rate so you can tell for sure.

It's kind of ugly but fits the goofy ass B-Movie theme of the game perfectly. I mostly dig the part where they managed to capture events from the game and wire them to the cab's lighting. There's plenty of potential on that shit for immersive gimmicks, kinda like the light up buttons from the spy hunter cab.

The game itself was hard to play. Splatterhouse was a straight up side-scroller iirc so the femur controller wouldn't have been too bad. All the custom doodads and shit look so expensive though. No cheap looking stencil art slapped on the cabinet either. It looks just like an old sewer or something with an iron cover for the service box. A trackball is maybe okay considering how many games use it and that it can navigate Windows. You'll never have all the dials, twinsticks, drums, giant butts etc to play every single game though and the more you try to put on your panel the dumber it starts looking. I think generally it's best to just have some hidden USB ports and some various accessories tucked in the back or better yet to build additional cabinets with novel controls - been really wanting to get hold of a comfy gutted racekar cab myself to build on.

One of my favorite motion cabinets. The hydraulic seat shakes and bumps around differently based on what road surface you're on. When you go over a jump, all the motion stops, and then you hit the ground with a jolt of the seat.

The game is great too, basically "Namco Rally Championship".

I got to play Gunmen Wars again today. Third person shooter where two teams of power armor soldiers shoot it out. The gun controller works as an analog stick to move your character, and turning the gun left and right lets you rotate.
