Definitely an aesthetically interesting game.

It feels similar to Dynamite Headdy in color palette for a lot of levels. It's all really unique and doesn't really feel like it's trying to be a rip off of anything which is surprising.

I just found out there's going to be a remake of Dino Dini's Kick Off. Those old Kick Off games were great. It got me thinking about sports games. It feels like every company could make them twenty years ago and do well, because people cared more about fun gameplay than realism and licenses.

What are your favorite sports games?

Under E for Elder Scrolls... it's where the glare is in the pic.

What are the best games to emulate on phones? The buttons are a bitch so games like platformers are difficult.

I know turn-based RPGs are best, but what games do you enjoy?

Probably Pokémon. But lately I just play a random game for about ten minutes until I get pissy at pressing virtual buttons.

I've played the shit out of Pokemon. I was hoping for a few besides that, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound.

When I did, I played Pokémon.

Hey /vr/, I've been looking for Tips & Tricks magazine for October 1998 but all I can find is the cover. Do I have any chance of finding scans of it?

Also gaming magazine thread I guess.

Did it rape your mother or something? It wasn't something to subscribe to but it was cheaper than buying a strategy guide to a new game and often easier to find too.

I read my gaming magazines from cover to cover.
(This was when I didnt have internet) so it was my only source of info.

I dunno, I would just pick one of these up off the shelf in the store and see it's half codes, half reader artwork, and like 2 gaming articles.

I have $100 in birthday money and I want to buy a new retro system to celebrate this new year. I already own a Dreamcast, SNES, N64, and an Atari2600 but I would like to extend my retro gaming collection but be able to stretch this money as much as possible. I'm torn between the Sega Saturn and the NES but those can get pricey and I am open to suggestions.

Which retro systems to you recommend /vr/?

Considering the money you have and the consoles you already have you should definitely be getting a Genesis next, either a model 1 and a Chinese Everdrive to go with it or an integrated CD system like a CDX or X'Eye
>>
>>2789359
I'm a nintendrone and I agree with this guy 100%.
>>
Get a Mega Drive and find Gunstar Heroes, too, that's the best game on the system and one of the best games ever made. You'll also be able to play Master System games on it with a Master System Converter.
I'd only recommend a Saturn if you could speak Japanese.

Congratulations!

You've just been selected as the first foriegn AD! And because you're a gaijin, they want you to select classic titles for the Kacho to play.

The rules are:
Nothing beyond Playstation era
The title must have been developed and published in a country outside of Japan.

What do you put him up against, /vr/?

X-COM. Would have to be the PS1 version because AFAIK that's the only version that was translated to Japanese. I'm sure Arino would have fun renaming all the soldiers which would add a lot of entertainment value.

Also the Japanese cover art is awesome.

Previous thread(s) - >>2773698 >>2773424

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Well back in 1999 most people either had dial-up or early DSL which was only marginally better, so most websites were are entirely completely basic or offered a basic version as an option.

Anyone else just loves the aesthetics of those top-down GB games?

Something about the technical limitations of the console and small size of the screen forcing devs to make everything look big and cute, by comparison SNES games had more colors and sprites, but end up feeling less warm and charming. It also affects the gameplay and made games more fast-paced.

I bought the Konami Shmups book from HG101
http://www.amazon.es/Hardcore-Gaming-101-Presents-Unofficial/dp/1500737178
Is a book which copy/paste multiple articles from HG101 webpage about konami shmups.
If you like HG101 articles, shmups and hate to read from his webpage, is a good book, but is a bit overpriced for what it offers.

I watched the entire first volume dvd, didn't really impress me much. The internet drama with the crazy mgs2 translator feminist was a far more fun read.

What classic RPGs will induce a lot of feels? Earthbound's final battle came close, but didn't really get much out of me.

No video games has made me cry to date, but so far I've mostly been a casul who's played FPSes.

What do you mean by "RPG"? To role-play requires an audience and is not possible in a single-player game per Gary Gygax.

Chrono Trigger's music alone gives me the feels, but I didn't really give a shit about the story. Specifically this theme:

Why people insist ?

Crpg and Jrpgs , they are two completely different genres.

and I LOVE BOTH , my favorite game is Ultima IV , but Chrono Trigger It is the most fun thing in the world for me.

why CRPGs fans usually hate JRPGs? Why JRPGs fans only play jrpgs/weaboothings and don't give a try the first Fallout or any other beautiful CRPG (like Darklands, Wizadry 8 or Might and Magic II ) ?

why the fucking fuck all fucking people thinks CRPGs and JRPGs are the exact same thing ?

why all people read RPG and the first thing they thinks is Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest , like all RPGs in the world are JRPGs completely ignoring the existence of CRPGs ?

all this is so fucking stupid

As someone who played JRPGs my whole life, I want to expand my horizons a little and try some CRPGs.
What would you recommend? The smoother the transition, the better.
>>
How do you define the genre's exactly?

Is Etrian Odyssey a JRPG or CRPG?

Is Morrowind a CRPG or a WRPG?
>>
>>2782923

I guess for the most seamless transition you could try JRPGs with CRPG elements like SaGa Frontier, it features a free scenario system where you can travel the world talking to people and whatnot from the get-go. I personally didn't like it and found it a bit too free but I encourage you to try it and see how it feels to you.

If that's a little overwhelming for you then try Legend of Mana, that game is far more JRPG friendly and only has a few elements similar to CRPGs. You have complete control over your characters battle abilities, right down to equipment crafting (literally the most in-depth crafting system in a retro game, btw) and you get to pick what quests you take in almost any order, not to the degree of Frontier or most CRPGs but it should be enough to give you a sense of it all.

If you really want to dive right into a CRPG and see if you like it you could try Silver. I'll preface this by saying it's a fairly unique game as-is and it's not aged very well but it has a cool feature of being relatively linear and leveling you up automatically as the story progresses.
