Why haven't you bought the best portable device for retro gaming yet?
>Android emulation
>Xbox buttons
I don't buy trash.
>>3230085
>Best platform to emulate on other than windows
>Uses custom made buttons and vita joysticks
What??
>>3230082
>Best
>Not powerful enough to use shaders in RetroArch
>Awkward button placement; uses the DS form factor despite not having a second screen
>Analog sticks given the sweet spot
>Mushy D-pad
>Battery has a tendency to keel over if you use a fast charging cable
What??
Is this the best book on the subject thus far? I'm inclined to agree.
What else would you recommend that is as in depth?
>$16.99
>sale price
It better be for that much.
Just lurk /vr/ for a week and you're an expert.

It's Nintendo focused, but Game Over is really good. I need to read Ultimate History though.
There is neoclassical music, so there must be the term "neoretro". ITT: neoretro vg
Super Meat Boy
I Wanna Be the Guy/Boshy
Binding of Isaac
Shovel Knight
Super Amazing Wagon Adventure
They're just called 'indie games' now. Unfortunately.
>>3229481
It doesn't matter how they are called by most. Besides, indie and neoretro only intersect, since some big developers still do neoretro (I think?).
>>3229479
Only catchy tunes I can remember were the first couple of stages in Shovel Co-niggot.
The rest are forgettable.
Should add VVVVVV to that list.
What about neoretro remixers, like RushJet1?
Reminder that Sonic 2 is a bad game
>any Sonic game

I don't get it. They fixed the one problem the first game had. And made a bigger game. Why so salty?
Should Sonic Team have just let Mario have the "3D platformer crown" during the 5th Generation?
Instead of trying to bring Sonic into 3D, they could have polished up his 2D gameplay even more. Sprite based stuff got pretty good during 5th gen, and I think a Sonic 4 made during that era would have been great.
Then, after Mario 64, once platforming was able to work in 3D, then they could have added the nuances of Sonic. That's what happened in 2D: video games had to learn how to Mario before they could Sonic.
Considering that every 3d Mario has been inferior to Mario 64, no.
Stop crying, Nights was better than a 3D Sonic game could have been on the Saturn.
Shiggy himself praised Naka for Nights.
>>3229427
not crying, and I'm trying to say that they shouldn't have even tried to 3D Sonic on the Saturn. 2D Sonic would have been the better way to go. Level design was already at its peak, as was the physics system. Just needed to improve sound quality, visual quality, and boost the amount of content. Just refine the fuck out of it.
Still haven't played NiGHTS yet.
So, I recently played through Avernum: Escape from the Pit, which is a remake of Exile: Escape from the Pit, made by the same people (mostly one dude, if I'm not mistaken) in the 1990s.
Fucking loved it. Looking for more old school, top-down, turn-based rpgs. I already know Fallout, Wasteland, Ultima, and Arcanum.
Any more specific contents you're looking for?

I like having lots of options available in building a character and in what quests/missions to go on, who to talk to and what to say to them, and multiple possible endings. I especially like being able to talk shit to evil characters to start a fight.
Something sci-fi (or, hell, science fantasy) would be nice, but I'm fine with whatever you have.
For me, the best of these games tend to be from the mid-late 1990s.
I grew up playing the exile series. 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. Spiderweb even sent me a free copy since I was still registered for buying the original on 3.5" floppies directly from them 20 years ago.
That being said, I can't fucking stand Avernum. I pray the do a 64-bit release of the Exile series.
Why is she so perfect?
>>3229395
because she's a drawing

Who the fuck is this bitch?

>he hasn't played Valkyrie Profile
Am I the only one who starts an RPG by going in blind and willing to experiment, but shortly after the halfway point compulsively turn to guides to make sure I'm getting all the best gear and doing the quests right?
I'm just really afraid of investing 20+ hours into a game and making it to the end and not being able to beat it because I missed some great weapon or spell. It feels like cheating but I can't help it. I don't want to have to start over and waste all that time.
I'm exactly the same. At the 20 hour mark I'm looking for guides. I don't feel bad about guides at all though, I'm an adult human, I love long-ass JRPGs, but I want to play them, beat them, and then play another. If I take 70 hours for a 50 hour game, that's eating into time I could spend on the next game.
The only rpgs I felt compelled to use a guide on were the old nes FFs so I wouldn't get lost and Shining Force since you could easily miss a few characters and never get the chance to get them again. I hated that trope.
I've never had a problem beating a standard RPG even when I didn't get some elusive item or made some mistakes in character development.
I mainly check guides when I'm stuck for a prolonged time.
Can we get a retro game tunes thread going?

Whats the oldest vidya normies / little kids could get into? I think 4th gen still appeals to pretty much everyone.
When ever works on a tablet.
Atari 2600
old arcade games like pac man
Find a flaw.

It's a shmup
One of the very few remotely interesting ones, but still
Not as good as Radiant Silvergun.
it's literally perfect
I've never played any Quake single player campaign. Are they any good?
>>3228407
quake 1 has a badass campaign
quake 2 is ok
Yes very, its my favorite series and I've played the story for quake one a million times
>>3228407
If you do play Quake make sure to play it through a modern source port like Quakespasm and not emulated.
Why didn't more games take advantage of Lock-On Technology?
Or rather, why didn't console expansion packs catch on when they were clearly possible.
Shit like the SEGA CD and 64DD failed because it's a whole extra console, if it's just an expansion for a game then it could still work.
>>3227580
Because there's no advantage it's just a gimmick. Damn. Decades later they're still fooling kids.
I was physically hurt in my lower abdomen by the obscene amount of leverage being applied to those S&K carts
Sega CD was pretty successful for what it was, actually. It certainly can't be compared to the 64DD which only had like 10 games and sold 15k units.
your opinion of the bomberman series
I like the 3D bomberman games better than the original games.
sorry /vr/
Dumb party games with zero skill.
>>3227475
But the N64 Bombermans are still /vr/ and pretty awesome.
Unless you mean that abortion released on PS3 by some western dev.
What are some best arcade games of all time?
Twinkle Star Sprites
My favorite video game of all time.
