So I have this co worker who's heavily into Northern and Western European history. He made a claim that, according to research, the Picts were actually a Germanic culture and related or even interchangeable with Saxons.
However, he has a dubious background as a neo-nazi and he couldn't (or wouldn't) name his sources so I became suspicious. On the other hand, I am still curious, because it could very well be that I had missed out on some groundbreaking new discovery since I don't really keep up with the latest history newsletter.

Is a perspective thing really. I used to struggle with nihilism, always trying to go further in the reach of meaning. If you go to the begining there is no meaning in that, you go to the end and thers no meaning in that. But in the middle there is a lot of things happening. Not too sure about the Balkans. Most of it was just countries deciding to leave the federal republic and Yugoslavia not accepting the secession. Srpska wanted to secede as well. To be clear, I don't think separatism is the same as nationalism.

Its a two parter and covers the whole period from the beginning to Robespierres death. Its awesome, not really biased for any side and has great scenes.
I'm pretty good at history, especially military history, history is my favourite, so I'm putting most of my educational effort on history.

Specialize in a specific area of history, find the teaching authority in that area, study/make friends with him, produce some original research that taps an area of modern interest to the world/scholarship/public in pursuit of your PhD, get hired by a college who wants to snatch up a hot commodity

Read his Rothschild book, Sigmund Warburg book, read the ascent of money and the Cash nexus.
He is a very good Historian. He does a lot of great archival work and his book on Warburg and from what i have heard of the Kissinger, books are fantastic. The cash nexus is also very good though quite academic and is really just a collection of essays but it as a corpus of his thinking it is absolutely brilliant.
I do have a lot of respect for the guy but while I do admire his boldness he fancies himself a bit...
