I don't understand how the HRE worked.
In what ways was this more than a bunch of independent states?

What were the powers of the Emperor from 1500 and on?

Why did great powers like Spain or Austria even bother with the religious and administrative affairs of independent states?
Finding information about the specific practical organization of the HRE is hard, at least online.

You really think anyone knows how the HRE was even a thing past Charlemagne?
>>
>>1032972
The HRE didnt exists in Charlemagne' time
When the Frankish Empire divided in 843, the glorious Western part became the Kingdom of France, and the shitty Eastern part became the Kingdom of Germany (which renamed itself into "HRE" in 962)

Why isn't he regarded as an enormous protestant hero?

Because he didn't free the Church from the control of corrupt officials. Instead he just put himself in the position of Pope and kept the same system while altering a few doctrines here and there. He also had Protestant reformers killed.

of course. anyone who claims otherwise is an overzealous liberal. the tigris and euphrates caused mesopotamian society to flourish, the nile caused egypt to flourish, etc.

what liberals reject that geography determines history? this seems to be more likely for /pol/-types to reject since it is counter to the claim of there being superior races that do better than inferior races

Was Iran-Iraq the most unfair war in all of history?
Iran was on every nation's shitlist (except Syria, but who gives a shit) and Iraq was given full support by the west, sovblock and arab states and even got a get out of jail card for using chemical weapons.

Do any other conflicts feature such apparent one-sideness?

The Anglo-Zanzibar War was pretty unfair.

Besides, most countries were just trying to make sure neither Iran or Iraq won, because a victory for either one would be disastrous.

Hey /his/ so I'm thinking about what career I want in the future, and since I love history, I've been thinking about becoming a historian. The only problem is that no matter what I google, I can't find a straight forward answer on what they do. So, what is a historians job, not what a historian IS but what do they physically do? Do they spend their time reading all day, and writing reports? Do they just shit around in museums all day? I need an answer

Saying "I want to be an historian" is like saying "I want to be a scientist", there's a fuckton of categories that do a fuckton of different things.

Basically - Historians do historical research professionally.
Some write books and if they pick an appealing subject, they sell them. Some teach.
I had a job doing archival research on military files to try and help identify WWI and WWII bodies when they get found. It didn't even occur to me that this was an application of history education but there you go.

Here are the kinds of jobs and small business activities that historians conduct:

The majority of historians are employed as lecturers by Universities. At current standards this involves producing two to three research monograph equivalents, sucking AHA cock or the equivalent, finally if you're super lucky and good getting a full time job at 35, which involves 60 to 80 hour weeks teaching shits who don't want to be there nationalist lies and pumping out more monograph equivalents on topics which disinterest you. In non-unitary pay systems the pay is worse. The research funding is worse.

The second most common occupation for the historian is the Government Glorifier of Nationalism and the Military. Generally you need to have hit captain or major in the military officer hierarchy to be eligible. (Special forces involve lower requirements). Your national cultural institutions (museum, library or archive as appropriate to your nation's shit fight between curators, librarians and archivists for funding) may also employ glorifiers. You don't control your research, but you have to be a person who believes the old lie dulce et decorum est pro patria mori to get the job.

Another stream is the historian for hire. Here you glorify private and commercial institutions, and the small government institutions, for pay. Remember, your base research rate is the lecture rate and triple triple for oncosts and unbillable hours. You generally need to be someone's son to get work.

Another category of glorifier is the party worker. These tend to be from labour parties and leftwards (bourgeois parties hand out academic sinecures to their old war horses). Here you have to be active senior cadre, continue your "day job" for the party, and write approved party history.

Finally, there's unemployment / disability pension plus living in a caravan near archives. I know at least one historian who made his career like this.

>but what do they physically do?

Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, conduct marking, and sit in the attendant staff meetings (60%+ of their time).

>Do they spend their time reading all day, and writing reports?

You generally can't sustain reading for more than two to four hours straight, unless you're on archival materials in which case you can sustain 10+ hours straight (because its archives mang.)

Most people can't write for more than 2 hours a day seriously. Then again 2 hours a day is more than enough to get your thousand words out.

>Do they just shit around in museums all day?

I generally shit once or twice a day, less when reading archives because of the nervous tension and dehydration. Museums have an obligation to collect the physical remains of the past to typify. Historians are interested in the documentary record of the past, and the physical remains of the past are rarely fruitful enough documents. Historians prefer libraries and in particular archives.

Most of their time, though, is taken up by reading books they'd rather not read for teaching, review purposes, or because they are obliged to cite them if only to show they disagree.

>I need an answer

Your needs don't matter in this world, mate. Learn it. Try reading some fucking labour history.

Why do so many here hate the reformation?
I get it did add to the thirty years war in a way, but considering how corrupt the Church was at the time there wasn't really many other ways possible. Martin Luther even tried to reform the Church from inside before they decided to try and get rid off him.

Let me clarify myself a bit. People seem to act as if the Reformation wasn't a fully natural reaction to a Church that needed reformed but refused reforms. The Reformation even indirectly lead the Church to improve, as they didn't want to be the super corrupt douchebags of Europe anymore.

You are right in that the Church reformed as a result of Luther. However, Luther also created Protestantism, which is basically a living, breathing, heaving edifice of heresy. Let me reiterate that : Protestants are heretics. They are in complete violation of Christian teachings. If any Protestants are good Christians, they are so in spite of their Protestantism, not because of it.

So no, the Reformation on balance did nothing good. It caused the Devil to enter in and pollute Christendom. But of course all of this was foretold, and true Christians have kept the Faith.

It led to schism. A schism that went wrong. Look at America today, it's filled with heretic cults and sometimes very hateful sects. This is why we had synods, you know, to avoid this kind of shit.

Every single way you conceive of war is wrong. Mobility>Firepower and guns are only localized suppressive Fire.

The only use for firepower in this day and age is to pin the enemy while you close.

>Muh Marksmun
>Muh Riflemun

Jominites keep complaining about bullets being to " weak" when ammo is just meant to pin troops while you maneuver and close.

Is Japan the bastard son of China with the West?

I can see numerous similitarities and influences from China and Western Europe/United States in Japanese culture and history.

Japan is just Japan. It mirrors a lot of things from China in Japan's old times but modern day it leans more towards America and the West because we forced them to starting with Perry, and later after WW2.

So basically, Japan is just a country that likes to copy others but make it there own.
