For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

2
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Unless those neighbors believe in more than one God. Then you have free reign to murder and torture them till they give up their beliefs for yours.

Pyramids look neat. They're also relatively symmetrical and easy to understand building wise.

Take one level, build it, then take a smaller sized level and put it on top of it.

1. Some princes wanted to stay Catholic, some wanted to be Protestant. Whichever would let them hold onto their titles

2. People were in fear that their after life was at stake

3. It evolved into a civil war

And into a dung heap. That's an important part.

1: There are a bunch of tribes living in an area, each one governing itself that squabble for power
2: One of these tribes (for simplicity sake your tribe) gains a slight advantage in administration, war fighting ability, a good alliance, the misfortune of others or some combination there of manages to conquer one of it's rivals and make them vassals
3: Now that you have a vassal you can use them to fund the creation of larger, better armies and so the conquest of a third tribe gets easier and so on for a bit, putting your loyal supporters and exceptional warriors in charge of new provinces to rule them as their little sub-dynasties, thus a kingdom is born.
4: Eventually your kingdoms hit a wall due to complications in regards to communication, rebellious vassal lords who want to make their provinces into either independent kingdoms or take over, costs of maintaining garrisons, run into or simply run out of land to conquer and expansion stops.
5: Time goes by, technology advances and language becomes more uniform across your kingdom.

6: Eventually your kingdom becomes unstable due to the population becoming more politically involved and ideologies based on ideas of the equality of all human beings comes up threatening your precious feudal oligarchy.
7: Have a bunch of hack writer declare that the people of your specific land are not "the subjects of your throne" but "the People of your country" and that they have with them a distinct history (leaving aside that most of it was being illiterate peasants bossed around by thuggish warriors and nobles) and many proud accomplishments (even if up until 200 years ago you were considered the most ass backwards collections of morons on the continent) along with how they posses a "inherent spirit of nobility" and other such meaningless pap which needs to be defended against the foreign hordes and their 'corrupting influences'.

to push aside or deflect a pike so the swordsman can close with his blade
>>
>>292990

Not really. They were more of a duelling or a self-defense piece of equipment. In most pitched field battles, you wanted some kind of two handed polearm as your primary melee weapon. Swords of any stripe tended to be more of a backup/sidearm sort of thing.

Wouldn't you want a larger shield, then? So you can protect yourself easier or defend from arrows?

Why have the Slavs had such a hard time consolidating democracy? Non-slavic post soviet states like the baltics have become true democracies, but russia, Ukraine, Belarus et al all are corrupt to the teeth

So I saw the recordings of graffiti at Pompeii a while back and the really down-to-earth, relatable, understandable nature of it struck me as pretty interesting.

Does anyone know of any other "normal" historical text or writings? Like, stuff from the ancient past that captures day-to-day life and so forth? Records of mundane events, commentaries, graffiti, that sort of thing?

I'm not really sure if there's a term for what I'm looking for but I'll willing to check out anything neat you can think of. Thanks.

There's loads of this stuff, actually.

I remember reading that one of the oldest surviving written documents records a goat transaction or something, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Florilegium Urbanum has lots of great primary sources on this stuff. Lots of it pertains to buisness contractions in the Middle Ages that details otherwise simple, mundane transactions.

Check them here: http://users.trytel.com/~tristan/towns/florilegium/flor01.html

>On holy days, the schoolmasters assemble their students at the churches associated with the particular festival, for purposes of a training exercise. There the students debate, some using demonstrative rhetoric, others using dialectical logic. Yet others "hurtle enthymemes", while those who are more advanced employ syllogisms. Some undergo the debating exercise just to be put through their paces, it being like a wrestling match of the intellect; for others it is to help perfect their skills in determining the truth. The contrivances of sophists receive credit for the torrent and flow of their arguments. Others apply false logic. Occasionally some speakers strive to persuade by delivering rhetorical orations, taking care to observe the rules of their art and not to leave out anything related to them. Boys from different schools fling versified arguments against each other, disputing matters of grammatical principles or rules governing the use of the future or past tenses. There are those who make use of epigrams, rhymes, and metrical verse – types of sarcasm traditionally heard at street-corners; with "Fescennine License", they freely ridicule their associates, without naming names. They hurl "abuse and jibes"; with Socratic wit they take digs at the character flaws of their fellows, or even their elders, and "bite more keenly even than Theon's tooth" with their "bold dithyrambs". The audience being "ready to laugh their fill", "with wrinkling nose repeat the loud guffaw".

This is pretty cool, thanks!

>>292690

Yeah, that'd be something I'm interested in. I like history's big events but the little things I think help me more in visualizing the world the events happened in, giving them more context and depth.
