How did the French Revolution even succeed? And I'm not talking about the phase where they took on all of Europe, I'm talking about the phase where they took control of the entire French government in the first place. It wasn't exactly the romantic "starved peasants storming the Bastille" scenario as the grand majority of France remained royalists (hence later Vendée, Toulon and Lyon), the Revolution was mostly supported by the rather small middle class. So how did this small and mostly untrained middle class manage to take on one of the most professional armies in Europe, including Swiss mercenaries who had literally made it their profession to kill others?

And conversely, why did the Revolution manage to prevent Royalist take-overs, especially with the Royalists literally raising their own armies often with foreign funding?

It wasn't the middle class, but a group of Freemasons in positions of power within the court, and banking.

Paris was the only city that mattered. Every single civil authority had been centered there over the course of the past few centuries. When those authorities were converted to the use of the National Assembly, the whole rest of the country, including the army, had no option except to follow suit.
>>
>>1394479
Makes sense, but those authorities and institutions were still guarded by professionals.

Is this actually true or just some conspiracy theory?

Literally any book by Ann Applebaum.

Tell me about the Republicans, /his/. Were they the "good guys?" Did they commit atrocities, just like any other Red movement? Would Spain have been better off if they had won?

That's why I'm asking you dickwad
>>
I would say they started out as the good guys, but since no one else in the international community would offer anything more than a sympathetic head-shake (thanks Britain, France, and the US) they were forced to rely almost entirely on the USSR for aid.

This meant that Stalin could basically force the Republic to make whatever concessions he liked, lest the Soviet Union withdraw support and leave them floundering. So towards the end of the war, the NKVD had effectively subverted the entire republican government and turned it into a Stalinist puppet (this is when they started purging Anarchists and Trotskyists).

The choice was, at that point, between a Marxist-Leninist dictatorship and a traditionalist one, and honestly, the latter was probably better for Spain in the long run.

Don't get me wrong, I would have much preferred that Franco and co. either never chimped out to begin with, or were quickly suppressed by a French-American-British backed Republic. But if the Soviet-supported state had won, it would have just meant an Iberian incarnation of Eastern Europe post-1945.

Can we all agree that religions who preach that material world is inherently and invariably bad and one should just "endure it" in preparation for the next stage (heaven, reincarnation, etc) are cancer upon humanity?
54 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
No, it's a pretty accurate outlook on the material metaphysical plane.
>>
Atheists are often depressed because their deepest experiences are found in vain sesnusal pursuits. They experience, yet do not recognise 2 facts; 1) nothing is ever as good as it seems and 2) one is frustratingly unable to attain those vain things one so desires most of the time. Thus the atheist is completely blind, but too starstruck by sex, drugs, or whatever worldly thing they happen to fancy that the enlightened beliefs of a spiritual man seem to him abhorrent. One may liken it to a sinking cruise ship; the atheist tries in vain to continue dancing as the ballroom collapses around him, whilst the spiritual man searches for a lifeboat.

Why do STEM students have a hate boner against philosophy?
149 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
>be STEM graduate
>spend NEET period studying philosophy
I don't understand?

Why are you straw manning? STEM love philosophy because they use it to BTFO of the Marxists who unjustly target them with affirmative action. The only "hate" is that STEM students feel it's a waste of money to take a degree in it and that people should research it in their past time instead. This "hate" is simply the belief that tertiary studies should teach industry skills rather than interests.
>>
Also is this a worldwide phenomenon, or is it just the USA? This doesn't happen in my country.
>>
>>1395308

Other way around. Philo SJWs hate STEM.

If the abos had domesticated the megalania instead of making it extinct, could this have turned the tide against European colonization?

>On 6 May 2001 he became the first Catholic pope to enter and pray in a mosque, namely the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria. Respectfully removing his shoes, he entered the former Byzantine era Christian church dedicated to John the Baptist, who is also revered as a prophet of Islam. He gave a speech including the statement: "For all the times that Muslims and Christians have offended one another, we need to seek forgiveness from the Almighty and to offer each other forgiveness."[92] He kissed the Qur'an in Syria, an act that made him popular among Muslims but that disturbed many Catholics.[186]

How were the Roman patricians/emperors referred to in their private life by people? Was Brutus called Brutus or was he Marcus or Marcus Junius Brutus? Was Octavian Octavian or Augustus? Tiberius? Caligula?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1400112
Judging by the texts we can assume that Brutus was referred to as Brutus, for example, but that could simply be a formality, i.e. how he would be addressed in text or in the senate.
We simply have no idea about many Roman colloquial mannerisms.

>The praenomen was a true personal name, chosen by a child's parents,
>Roman men were usually known by their praenomina to members of their family and household, clientes and close friends; but outside of this circle, they might be called by their nomen, cognomen, or any combination of praenomen, nomen, and cognomen that was sufficient to distinguish them from other men with similar names

I don't know if this is the right place, but why not a thread for (anti) war songs?

This song has different versions (this seems to be a shorter one), but it's basically about Death in war. From what I know it's a song composed in WWI that was also sung in WWIi

Is Hades the most misunderstood god in history? He is always demonized but he just does his job it's not like he sends every single soul to Tartarus or that the guys who are in Tartarus are innocent to begin with and as for Cerberus (at least in the version I've read) he is actually nice to the guys who enter Hades he just goes pitbull mode if someone tries to escape.

Also why is Grim Reaper demonized as well? He is another figure that does nothing wrong yet everyone treats him like shit.

And the Grim Reaper figure only got invented during the Black Death when people thought they were seeing a skellington with a scythe behind the town just before the plague struck.

>In October 1599, the parlement of Paris officially petitioned that Henry marry a princess worthy of his dignity. Henry took note and began considering candidates from several foreign states. According to Sully, however, he ruled out a German wife, on the grounds that it would feel like going to bed with a wine-barrel.
