No, because it assumes that everyone who writes down history has an agenda, and are not genuinely trying to find out what happened.

Considering the losers most likely die, yes.

It probably sounds naive but which type of science/philosophy can solve the existential problem.I think it might be abiogenesis but still making something come out of nothing does not mean it happened the same way back then.

What are you talking about? When was there ever nothing?

Abiogenesis isn't something out of nothing. It is the last missing link in out understanding of how you can get from organic compounds to incredibly simple forms of life,

If people seriously get butthurt over the non-initiated pronouncing anglicised names as they would based on spelling, then we should anglicise the spelling to reflect the actual pronunciation.

Where does the notion of Mediterranean culture as "warm", i.e. sentimental and open, as opposed to the "colder" people of the north come from? Can you pinpoint the historical period and context where it emerged?

I know this is technically breaching the rules here, but can we have a thread about Saddam Hussein? I'm starting to look into his legacy and there is some pretty interesting stuff in how he helped shape the middle east.

Not really looking for opinions on whether his removal from power was good or bad.

You're not breaking the rules whatsoever. His legacy extended long before the 25 year limit.

Anyway, *they* say he was the world's worse president but the world's best vice-president.

Undoubtedly Armenians were massacred cruelly, and many more died by disease whilst being marched to the deserts of Syria. That being said, the Turkish argument is as follows:
The ottoman empire was a dying empire- and the Armenians were in open rebellion and supporting the invading Russians. Like the Americans relocating the Japanese to internment camps, the Ottomans had to take action. HOWEVER.. unlike the Americans the Turks were a dying empire, and the Armenians were ,again, openly attacking...
The Turks claim that the government never intended it to be ethnic cleansing, but the circumstances of total war, disease, lack of infrastructure, and unruly and disheartened gendarmes in charge of the relocation- the result was a large loss of Armenian lives.

whether or not this absolves the Turks i can't say.. but that's the other argument
>>
>>532004
(Cont) The definition of genocide would imply that there was an actual intention to destroy the Armenians- which the Turks argue it wasn't
>>
>>533516

it was definitely an ethnic cleansing that part cant be denied

It's my belief that Socrates believed hardly in any form of empirical evidence, and could play devils advocate masterfully against any idea presented to him. Believing in not much at all, he dedicated his life to virtue ethics as the only true source of happiness.

Does anyone else crack jokes about terrible historical things because study has dulled your empathy regarding it? I'm not sure if "it's okay, I'm a historian" is an excuse people would accept when I joke about atrocities.

Here's one of his bits, I might get a few of the words wrong, and I can't do the voices, but oh damn, he had all of us laughing.

It's the winter of 1944. A small camp in the Austrian alps. Snow blows across the landscape, blanketing the ugly grey barracks in a faint sheen of pure white as sunrise breaks.

A buzzer rings out, a call for all the inmates to assemble in the central square. Groaning, exhausted, emaciated men hobble out of their beds and form ranks, some eight rows of ten deep.

On a raised platform, the camp Kommandant stands, flanked by two huge SS guards. He fidgets with a megaphone for a moment, before looking out at the throng. Suddenly, he raises it to his lips and bellows.

>I am a man of honor. And honor lies in obeying the chain of command. I do not like my orders, but I will follow them to the letter. Last evening, I received a missive from the Fuhrer himself. Half of you are to go home.

Despite the freezing weather, the hunger, the privation, and the implication that they were to be silent, a ragged cheer breaks out among the inmates, a few of them at the edges of the formation even capering in the snow. The Kommandant waves a fist, and instantly the gathering goes silent.

>I was not finished! There remain a few organizational details for such an order to be carried out. We must arrange transportation, and in these times it is not easy. There will be a short delay before you can leave, but I will do everything in my power to minimize it. You will probably not be ready to leave for a day or so, while we get everything in readiness.

He pauses, lost in thought, and then continues.

>Hans! Rudolf! Get the chainsaws.

What went wrong?

Could not compete against the free market system.
>>
>>531885
Of course, communism isn't made to compete. It's like comparing grenades to houses.

Example:

War is bad for the people, but good for the economy (capitalist). So when there are wars (or proxy wars), capitalism (for the economy) will always profit and communism (for the people) will suffer. And because it's easier to start wars, capitalism will reenforce nationalism and radicals, leading to war and capitalism coming out "more successful".

Resources wasted on war, are resources that could be put into education, health system, science and agriculture (etc.). All of these things are good for life, war is not. But the artificial concept of nationalism blinds people, and leads them to reevaluate their "priorities".

Currently the west is the best (economically speaking), but if that changes, we will be the ones that suffer and slave for others. Then We won't be saying that capitalism is the best, but we won't have to power and position to say anything at all either.

But yeah, as long as we have gigantic shopping centered and other mass consumerists distractions, we do have a fantastic life. Woo Mc Donalds!

>>531885
Oh boy, propaganda memes.

Not only is this is this obviously historically incorrect, it doesn't even hold up to rudimentary analysis. China is stronger than ever. Cuba, the conservative stalwart is still chugging along. North Korea is probably the worst off economically but that clearly is not stopping it. The USSR at its end was one of the most liberal of the Soviet style countries.

>"How did a small backwater nation at the end of the Roman empire manage to affect the entire world on such a massive level?"

We all know the answer to that. There is no religion quite like Christianity and Judaism. While at the same time other religions were demanding their followers to sacrifice their children and worship fire and use magic to protect you from evil spirits. But Christianity and Judaism were teaching about virtues, charity, love, faith, the things which ease suffering and make communities strong. And what are left with today? Our history as Europeans is so intertwined with the legends of the Judaic faith that it has affected our culture, language, justice system, even our very thought process. Everything of profit and value we have today we owe to Christianity.

How in the face of this grand event spanning thousands of years can the world deny the existence of God and his son Jesus Christ?

I'll agree but we should say that we owe it to greek and christian philosophy both, they have been intertwined from the beginning.

I like how you started off with Christainity and Judaism and then switched straight off to Christainity, while posting a picture of a mosque. Also, skipping over enormous intellectual, military, political, etc. events and just chalking it up to 'Christainity' while demonstrating nothing of the sort.

4/10 personally enjoyed, despite knowing it was stupid.

Not even close. Your pictures is also misleading considering the Muslim building is 700 years older than its Christian counterpart.

Islam being a system of governance quickly expanded and united lands that had been some of the richest in the Roman Empire (east and west) and the entire area of the sassanid empire. They simply had a better infrastructure at their disposal.

Yes, Christians took over the lead by late 1100s. Afterwards, there was a transmission of inventions from Europe into the middle east, not the other way around.

What's your excuse, /his/? Atheists have no way of knowing that their absolutely is no deity, and theists have no way of knowing that a deity absolutely does exists.

Therefore, the only logical way to be is an agnostic. It's the only honest way.

If there is a God, then agnosticism is fake.

If there is no God, then agnosticism is fake.

One is true, the other isn't.

Therefore agnosticism is fake.

Does that make one an agnostic agnostic?

Is there any evidence supporting theism?

Is there any evidence supporting atheism?

No?

Then neither can be stated to be true.
