Maybe not treasures but some famous ships are still missing. It's true we've found most of them but there are a few still missing.

“In the middle of April [1917] the Germans took a sombre decision. Ludendorff refers to it with bated breath. Full allowance must be made for the desperate stakes to which the German war leaders were already committed. They were in the mood which had opened unlimited submarine warfare with the certainty of bringing the United States into the war against them. Upon the Western front they had from the beginning used the most terrible means of offense at their disposal. They had employed poison gas on the largest scale and had invented the ‘Flammenwerfer.’ Nevertheless it...

This isn't news. And a country financing political dissidents in an area they want to destabilize, regardless of whether they agree with those dissidents, is nothing uncommon. I expect Germany didn't anticipate Lenin being so successful.

I'd say it's comparable to the middle east right now. You support some fringe radical groups for geopolitical reasons then it gets out of hand and they hate your guts.

It was a very disloyal, bitch move though. The Kaiser and the emperor of Russia were cousins who spoke via telegraph frequently!

The tsar had already resigned by the time of Lenins return to Russia though.

Have there ever been a greater meme concepts than Tabula Rasa and the myth of absolute equality? Why the fuck are these challenged more often?
11 replies and 4 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
Because science answers those questions now.
>>
>>1150269
Lots of things are more like guidelines rather than absolute truths. Semi-truths that are needed to make some society function properly.

That said everyone implicitly holds those concepts to be faulty yet holding them true makes life a lot easier and justifiable.

It's annoying when they bleed over into real life, for example the whole 'every aspect of society has to reflect the census' meme. It's never fucking challenged, it's just a given that everyone is absolutely equal and born with the exact same capabilities with any discrepancies chalked up to -ism, e.g. '50% of scientists aren't female because sexism'

>His speech was intended to inspire a coup d'état to restore the power of the emperor. He succeeded only in irritating the soldiers, and was mocked and jeered. He finished his planned speech after a few minutes, returned to the commandant's office and committed seppuku. The assisting kaishakunin duty at the end of this ritual (to decapitate Mishima) had been assigned to Tatenokai member Masakatsu Morita, who was unable to properly perform the task. After several failed attempts at severing Mishima's head, he allowed another Tatenokai member,...

Canada is a pretty cool guy. Free Healthcare and doesn't afraid of anything

I like how bro-tier Canada was during the Klondike gold rush at the end of the 19th century, when border disputes and law enforcement was shared between both countries with a minimum of rude landgrabbing and infighting.

They could have been dicks about all the dumb american prospectors edging in on their land but from what I've read they were honest and unnecessarily helpful in ensuring american safety.

There's a saying in philosophy that you're either an instinctive Platonist or an instinctive Aristotelian. I'm the former. Reading the Socratic dialogues in college was amazing, and then when I read the Republic it felt right and true in a way no book ever had before.

I think that's why I'm more of an Augustinian Catholic than a Thomistic one. I of course love Aquinas, but Augustine and his deep Platonism resonate with me more. I fucking love Plato.

So, lads, have you ordered your souls justly? Does your Reason have control of your Appetite...

Hey everyone, I'm looking at really delving into research on proto-indo-european languages and similar linguistic origins, so if anyone has any good sources for me (books, articles, etc) I'd be super appreciative.

Comparative Indo-European Linguistics, Robert S. P. Beekes
Indo-European Language and Culture, Benjamin W. Fortson
From Proto-Indo-European to Proto-Germanic, Donald Ringe
New Comparative Grammar of Latin and Greek, Andrew Sihler

You can find pdfs of them all on libgen.io

I suggest reading Beekes first since it also has a few chapters introducting historical linguistics.

To deal with high, heavy armor, what is better an axe or a mace?
Assume the weapon to be used with a shield and the user to be recently trained, strong and use heay armor himself.
Obviously, medierval settings, prove your claims .

Too many factors. Clarify time period and what you mean by heavy armor which with the previous bit can be anything from a gambeson and mail to lamellar to plate harnesses.

Also why a shield? Once armor advanced, shields fell out of favor heavily with people that could afford that armor in preference of more devastating weapons, starting with the dane axe and going into two handed warhammers, the pollax, halberds, etc.
Seems like an odd question.
>>
Consider the bill-hook, stilletto pairing.

Most heavily armored knights would be mounted in a realistic setting, and so the first step is to get them off their horse, and preferably on their backs.

To do this the English employed the billhook. Similar to a halberd but lighter and consisting of several bird-bill like hooks, it was used not to damage the heavy armored opponent but snag on his helmet, armor, or strappings and read him down or tangle him.

They would then finish the job with a thin dagger through the eye visor, or between the plates in the...

Neither. For heavy armor you want to use piercing weapons.
