Was Khrushchev a villain or a hero?

On one hand, he's responsible for the de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union, thus saving the USSR from turning into a North Korea.

On the other hand, he's almost led the world into a new world war.

On one hand, he's responsible for igniting the Space Race, responsible for many of the technological leaps of the past century.

On the other hand, he considered avant-garde artists and musicians hacks and outright oppressed them and their art.

I don't think you can quite blame the old man for that as the reason he placed Missiles in Cuba to rach the east coast was that the USA placed missiles in Turkey to reach Moscow.

Pissed off elites is the most important part. When making reforms it's important to actually have some fucking support for them. See also: Pavel I.

Can we get a serious, non-/pol/ thread about the Palestinian Exodus (Naqba) from what became Israel in 1948?

Efraim Karsh on the Arab armies inciting Palestinians to leave their homes: https://web.archive.org/web/20140224112045/http://www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/depts/mems/people/staff/academic/karsh/articles/WerethePalestiniansExpelled.pdf

Benny Morris on the "four wave" analysis of Palestinian exodus: http://jeffweintraub.blogspot.ca/2008/02/benny-morris-on-fact-fiction-propaganda.html

Benny Morris criticizing Ilan Pappé: https://newrepublic.com/article/61715/politics-other-means-0

Ilan Pappé responds to Benny Morris: https://electronicintifada.net/content/response-benny-morris-politics-other-means-new-republic/5040

Benny Morris on the justification of a transfer policy: http://www.counterpunch.org/2004/01/16/an-interview-with-benny-morris/

You don't need to keep it civil, but please, remember that this isn't /pol/ and we are looking for serious discussions more than "damn evil kikes" or "fuck the muslims".

As a Palestinian from the West Bank, I never really dealt with such things, although some here are mentally ready for another similar scenario.
It's sad when you're talking to some guy, and when asked where he's from, he says
>My family is originally from X village, but we live in Y town now.
These people don't forget their roots, and many people have names related to their original village.
I had a friend in school whose family name was "il-Yaseeni" from Deir Yassin.

I remember some Palestinian talking about finding his original family home in one of the coastal cities, when he finally got a permit to enter the areas, he found the neighborhood Jewish.

Thanks for the links.

Are there any good places to learn about how different societies reacted to each others' foods?

I'm talking about how the natives of America tasted beef for the first time, how western traders reacted to Chinese foods. How the British reacted to curries. About how when the Japanese gave up isolation and sent out diplomatic parties, how they reacted to the food they were given. How India grew to love the chili pepper. How Korea, the Hermit Kingdom, integrated peppers into their daily cuisine.

Not the whole broad economic view of setting up the spice trade or whatever.

Individual reactions to the dishes they were eating.

I heard that when the Spanish conquistadors first encountered the potato, they heard from the Incas that it was an edible plant, and tried eating the fruits (which are poisonous) and got sick. I can't find a source for this story, but I have read that the potato met some resistance in Europe, because people thought it was bad for you and caused disease.

FTFY

I see more Marx and Stirner more often. The right-wing seems to focus more on religious (Christian) debates, even though the Church owns a large chunk of its philosophy to Platonism.

Dionysus, for example, quoted Proclus verbatim without naming his source and was considered an authority by the Church for many centuries.

Augustine said in his confessions that "the books of the Platonists" played a part in his conversion. You would think, why not convert to paganism instead? But Roman Paganism was so degenerate at the time that the only place one could live out the ideals laid down by the Platonists (notice I don't use the term Neoplatonists) was in the Christian Church. Platonism was extremely at odds with the actually existing Greek and Roman religions from the start, so much so that Plato envisioned banning Homer from his Republic and the Later Platonists had to come up with entirely new ways to interpret Homer so as to save face. They were in a sense reformers too, but they never got their way, partially because their religion was too elitist and intellectualized and missed the devotional aspects, whereas Christianity was adapted to the minds of illiterate slaves and old wives.

Ironically their exegetical method of interpreting seemingly absurd texts in a "spiritual" fashion was applied to the Torah by Philo and inherited by the Christian Church. We find this style of exegesis in Aquinas (there's the literal and the "spiritual" meaning of scripture. The ones that are absurd are usually the "spiritual" ones). It is one of the many influences Platonism in the Christian theology. Christians of course will ignore or deny this because they are dishonest and resistant to truth, but such is life.

Romefag here, got a shit ton of books on ancient Rome, and loved "The History of Rome Podcast".
After I finished that I looked for more history podcasts, and have greatly enjoyed the "History of China Podcast". Now I am looking for good recommendations on ancient Chinese history books, preferably something more over-arching to begin before getting anything on specific dynasties or eras.

>Pic related, saw these neat bastards when I went to the Chicago Field museum 2 weeks ago, They had a cool ancient Greek exhibit there too that just closed up.

Why were the Mongols so destructive? How were they able to take on and essentially destroy the scientific capitals of the world in the middle east? How did they create such a dominant military presence in Asia, essentially forcing their presence in the gene pool in countries that are now the likes of Pakistan and India?

The Mongs had 0 to do with the Mughal Dynasty.

The only thing "Mongol" about it was its founder, Babur, being descended from Genghis Khan via his great great grandmama's side. Babur himself did not think he was a Mongol, but a Muslim Prince. In fact he detested mongols as they were barbarians.
>>
>>922436
Multiculturism and open border policies weakened those nations that promoted such liberal values. So its no surprise those are the nations that fell first to the mongols, even with all their "advanced" science and knowledge.
>>
>>922455
Multiculturalism? As far as I know, the middle east , up to Iran, maybe even Afghanistan has for the most part of history been pretty multicultural. Multiculturalism has always been at the very heart of those societies, as race didn't make a difference in your social class. I am aware that slavery was obviously present in history, but race wasn't a factor, and darker skinned peoples weren't considered lower races on a pan-societal level. Over simplifying the situation and blaming "multiculturalism" and "open border policies" is pretty ignorant.

Spending = income. If there's a sudden drop in spending, there will necessarily be a drop in income.

The problem is, wages are sticky, if the business loses money people don't all take a pay cut, they get fired.

More people getting fired -> even less spending -> more people getting fired.

The way out of this is to just step in and make sure spending doesn't drop (through government spending, typically).

>And so, in conclusion, I believe I have amply demonstrated that "Your Mother", also sometimes referred to as "Yo momma" and "Dat Bitch" was not an actual, historic figure, but rather a composite character, formed from the melding of many mothers, and thus forming a non-human battery of traits such as excessive weight, sluttishness, and stupidity. Any questions?

what are you trying to say
>>

You've seen the evidence. We have gigabytes of data, transcribed onto thousands of pages, that refer to this figure of "Your mother". She was not an actual, living, breathing person. She was never a historic personage. She was a composite. All references to "Your mother" should be read carefully, in the proper historic context, and with the understanding that very likely, each of them refers to a different woman, if they even refer to a woman at all.
