Alright, well first I'm gonna tell you that this is a large undertaking. Not to discourage you, but what we consider to be the medieval period is literally a millenium. So anything you read is going to either be really generalizing and vague or focused on one particular area and time.

For anything regarding weapons ever, always check out pic related. You can get it new for forty bucks, but the nigga is dead so get it cheap and used. There may be some inaccuracies due to it having been written in the '30's, but it very much lives up to its name. This book...

A lot of eastern euros collaborated with the Nazis - I think the highest percentage of any Jews killed happened in the Baltic. A lot of ethnicities within the SU took any chance they could to fight it, like the Ukrainians.

Nope, compare the numbers of collaborators vs. the numbers of people being in the resistance.

Basically just pre-war Polish policemen, forced to work on the pain of death and deportation of family.

How come the Huns were able to defeat and plunder the Eastern Roman Empire, the richer, more populous, more united half of the empire, yet were defeated in their first major battle against the poorer, weakened Western Romans?
21 replies and 6 images submitted. Click here to view.

since they were richer, more united, and more populous Attila was more cautious around the East Romans only raiding shit and not causing any real damage

West Rome wasn't so he thought it would be easier and thus wasn't as cautious and went full force despite it being further away and having the stronger Germanic tribes surrounding it.

Short answer: Goths and their shitty communication system, and the Romans using a very strong charge directed at Attila's position.

Long answer: The Visigothic king Theodoric stood with Western Rome because fuck those horse niggers, they kicked us out of our homeland. The Alans and other Germanics tagged along because why not, and the Western Romans provided a sizable force also because fuck those horse niggers.
The Huns did what they do best: kill. They had tons of allies too, but they were tagging...

Try Niall Ferguson's "Empire", if that isn't one of the books you're bashing

In the end, we really did collapse because of money. We were broke from the Second World War, needed loans from America, so took them, with conditions attached that we would commit to decolonisation.
>>
>>1087271
Land empires are old school anyways
especially sprawling overseas ones are far too expensive to maintain

the collapse of the British empire I understand, what's more strange is the French loss of North Africa considering costs were low and it was so close to the motherland unlike India.

What European colonial power was more likely to colonize Japan?

None, maybe portugal or spain for a few years before getting kicked out because stretching out supply lines that far away from europe is not beneficial to any power. It became pretty much impossible by the time Japan was unified.
But even if they were colonized, there's nothing worthwhile on Japan to harvest compared to South America or other places.

>Conversely, is happiness attainable at all(which ever way you define it)?

Yes, of course. It doesn't always last, but happiness is easily within the grasp of the average man. The tragedy is that so few people take the time to really consider what would make them happy, and so spend lives of quite desperation just waiting for "happiness" to find them, instead of going out there and making it happen.
>>
>>1087149
So happiness is something you "gain" from doing certain actions that you find pleasurable then?

What if you can't get it, or fail? Is your life meaningless then?

>>1087162
Why do you presume that life is worthless without happiness?

1. Because most of our sources for ancient history is written by Greeks and they are mostly about how Greeks are awesome and cool and how everybody else isn't. That's pretty annoying.
2. Western historiography tends to overemphasize supposed similarities between ancient Athens and modern western world for political reasons. I mean, they ostensibly too had liberties, democracy, freedom...

Did any American government ever tried to ignore the Supreme Court's ruling? How did it end?
21 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

Lmao yeah of course. Checks and balances are based on power struggles, and the Judicial Branch is inevitably gonna get fucked over at some point in history

The Trail of Tears was the result of Andrew Jackson blatantly ignoring a Supreme Court ruling. He actually told John Marshall to find an army to enforce his ruling if he wanted it obeyed that badly. Then he killed a bunch of indigenous by marching them from Georgia to Oklahoma.

It ended okay for Jackson, considering he got to be on the 20. It ended less well for all the people who got ethnically cleansed
>>
Andrew Jackson.

FDR also attempted to pack the Supreme Court with six more sycophant judges because some of his New Deal proposals weren't passing.

When and how did the Byzantine army transformed from the legion-based late Roman army into one consisting of soldier-farmers and a small cream of professionals?
6 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theme_(Byzantine_district)#First_themes:_640s.E2.80.93770s

Basically the deal was to form joint military-administrative units in which soldier-peasants will be tied to land so they can defend it anytime it's needed

Needless to say it worked pretty well in halting Arab invasions across Anatolia
>>
>>1086799
Before the theme, the legion had already collapsed and was steadily replaced with local mercenaries and private guards. The reason was much the same as in the West - the collapse of the annona tribute fleet that supported the standing legionary army, only this time in the East it was Justinian's campaigns and subsequent plague that crippled Roman shipping and taxation for generations, leading to the Sassanid debacle and ultimately the Arab conquest.
