Is it still the ship of Theseus once all of its pieces are replaced?

If you replace piece by piece, then yes.

If you take the whole thing apart and built it again, then no.

Theseus and Greek Heroes- if they even existed- most likely sailed in Pre-Classical Greek Ships.

Remember: everything in Greek Myth supposedly happened in ancient times for the Classical Greeks

It stopped being Theseus' ship as soon as Theseus died

On the topic of religion

when and how did the Islamic Golden Age end?
A lot of texts I've read made me infer that Al-Ghazali's anti-rationalism combined with the Mongol sacking of Baghdad were the coup the grâce to Islamic intellectualism.

But what preceded this death? And is my conclusion valid?

As far as I know the idea that Al-Ghazali caused the end of the era was first made by an amateur physics professor writing a book on the history of philosophy, but I haven't found any actual argument to support that. It seems unlikely.

What I believe happened was that the madrasa became increasingly standardized, patronage of which steadily replaced patronage of individual thinkers. The later madrasa had no place for advanced non-religious sciences, so these were pushed into the private homes of scholars and enjoyed little protection from angry mobs of Sufi mystics which had begun to appear around the 13th century. Economic decline from environmental changes, European expansion, and nomad raids by Mongols, Bedouin, and Berbers also whittled away at the Arab mercantile middle class that made up the bulk of early Islamic scholars.

Wrongo.

It ended with the decline of the Abbasids in the 900's AD and the coming of the Turkics. The Abbasids tottered into a collection of Islamic Princedoms who were far more busy fighting each other than doing knowledge n shiet nigga.

Jews had 4000 years to give legit arguments of why their god is real.
Christians had 2000 years to give legit arguments of why their god is real.
Muslims had 1400 years to give legit arguments of why their god is real.

Magic is the answer.

Actually their arguments were and are even more stupid than that.

> Not stabbing the beast in the heart
> Not taking the centers of the Muslim world, Damascus, Baghdad, Alexandria, Cairo.
> Spooked into running after "the Holy Land"

We might have the the advantage of hindsight, but surely there were at least some people that knew Egypt was a power base for many Muslim dynasties?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusader_invasions_of_Egypt

Egypt was one of the first territories conquered by the Arabs.

How would've a successful invasion of Egypt changed history? Or the capture of Baghdad.

When you think about it, Jerusalem was a horrible red herring.

What was the legal basis for sentencing Pétain to death? How can signing an armistice be high treason?

Treason
>>
>>1280362
Legally, he was condemned for endowing himself with the full powers that the French Assembly had voted on him, which is an unconstitutional act (I'm foreign to its true specifics, but that was the legal conjecture by which the french government absolved itself of the crimes of Vichy, by asserting that the rise of Vichy was unconstitutional) and he should've known better than to seize this power.

Also, on a symbolic side, him offering an armistice was perceived as traitorous because it doomed the french army to defeat: for example, more half of the french captures by germans befell the army AFTER he first announced by radio that he intended to sign an armistice. The french morale was broken beyond repair by his intention to sign an armistice.

Anyways, that's how I recall it is.

why did hitler spend resources and soldiers on jews , couldn't he have left them alone until he could capture some states? isnt that the rational thing to do?

Because he needed them as a scapegoat to be punished to further advance his goals.

uh, that's what happened

Audio recordings of hitler speaking with his staff show that they greatly underestimated the USSR, as far as they new everything would go fine.

Why don't western Europeans feel any sense of kinship with eastern Europeans? I see the west being really chummy with each other, but they seem to bully the east. And Europe's history is full of the west fucking over the east, especially with that Constantinople thing.

>>
>that Constantinople thing

care to elaborate?
>>
>>1279906
East has had to much turk and mongol couk to be considered european
>>
>>1279912
It's difficult to imagine Constantinople falling if they didn't get sacked by their fellow Christians going on a Crusade. That incident weakened Byzantium making them easy prey for Ottomans.

Also, most of Europe didn't really help much as Constantinople was getting sieged by Ottomans.

Obviously the West had its reasons, but its still notable that a lot of the things that the West does in relation to the East tends to fuck the East over, intentional or not.

Christans of /his/, orthodox , catholic and protestants. How do you maintain your faith given all the contradictions and historical evidence that goes against the bible? How do you keep believing that Jesus was the son of god when, historically, he was most likely just an apoclitpic prophet and follower of John the Babtist who preached of end times in which Jews would reclaim their land from the Romans? How do you still believe you have free will despite god knowing your future? How does it make sense that Jesus died for things he already knew we were going to do?

tl;dr how do you keep your faith in light of all the evidence that it's no real.

Well, I'm no longer a Christian due to completely unrelated circumstances, but let me try to address what I can from my upbringing and my current faith.

>How do you maintain your faith given all the contradictions and historical evidence that goes against the bible?

Faith is something stronger than evidence. I have faith in my gods because of what I've experienced and because of how I feel. I imagine the same goes for Christians. Also, if you take their doctrine of a 'fallen earth' as fact, then all evidence is suspect. After all, Satan is the God of this world (2nd Corinthians 4:4), and he's often called the prince of lies. Dunno if there's a scripture reference for that, would be interested to know if any Christfags wanna bring it up.

> How do you keep believing that Jesus was the son of god when, historically, he was most likely just an apoclitpic prophet and follower of John the Babtist who preached of end times in which Jews would reclaim their land from the Romans?

'He was most likely...' this statement is a claim, and the sort which easily allows bias to creep in. Personally, I think he was just a follower of John the Baptist who got lucky, but you do have to wonder why he became so successful after death, when that region was CRAWLING with 'messiahs' at the time. Why were none of the others so successful?

>How do you still believe you have free will despite god knowing your future?

Christianity grappled with this quite a bit, and a shitton of heresies cropped up over it. You oughta look into them, they're super fascinating.

>How does it make sense that Jesus died for things he already knew we were going to do?

A sacrifice that can give itself willingly for things it understands is the purest sacrifice of all.

Salve, my name is Meximedius.

I’m a 21 year old Ottoman Romanophile (Roman fan for you barbarians). I assemble mosaics and write poetry, and spend my days perfecting my art and reading superior Greco-Latin literature. (Julius Caesar, Cicero, Homer)

I train with my Paramerion every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I started getting tutored in the art of the sword 8 years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak the languages of the Roman Empire fluently, both Latin and Greek, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Roman history and their Corpus Juris Civilis, which I follow 100%

When Orban is done building my cannons, I am invading Konstantiniyye to crown myself the Casear to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an architect for Hagia Sophia or a mosaic designer!

I own several laurels, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Rome, so I can fit in easier. I salute my elders and seniors and speak Greek as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Rome!

It would have worked if turks converted to Orthodox Christianity. Then you'd have an Ottoman-led Roman Empire, which would have been the coolest thing ever, maybe able to land in Italy due to increased stability brought by having a population of the same religion.

TL;DR: Islam is cancer
