I'm looking for any good reference books that briefly go over the age of sail. An overview of ships themselves, battle tactics and how they evolved, day to day life of sailors on board ships, and even logistics for travels - how much water and food was packed per sailor per trip? for example. I'd settle for well researched fiction along the lines of CS Forester of Patrick O'Brien.

Six Frigates by Ian Toll. Although it is not at general as I think you are looking for - it may be a good start.
>>
>>1283502
Not a bad start, but I was hoping for something more worldly. Most accounts focus on the royal Navy during the colonial era and the Napoleonic wars, with mentions of French of Spanish navies depending on if it's focusing on age of exploration or Napoleonic war era, so I was hoping for something that focuses on ships as a whole.

How will our civilization be remembered in 2000 years?
Is there anyone even in the last 200 years who will be remembered in that time?

Napoleon, surely. Probably George Washington, Einstein, Hitler, Elizabeth II (for list in records of ruling female monarchs), Peter Higgs, Edwin Hubble, a few other theoretical physicists if their theories pan out, like Michio Kaku.

Assuming we don't have a MEE or anything that compromises our means of archiving our history, chance is what happens in this era on will have a library for it so there's no way our history can get lost or confused and combined with other past or future eras...

Said the Atlantans.

As far as people go, History has shown that the ones most likely to be remembered are Royalty/World Leaders philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians.

tl;dr, Hitler will be remembered in the annals of time.

Are developed countries developed because of democracy or is democracy developed in developed countries because they are developed?

Are rich countries often democracies because democracies are good for the economy?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
democracy does not mean republic.

Republics are good for the economy (compared to monarchy or despotism) because they encourage continuity of government (less likelihood of market crashes/power reshuffles) and because they encourage an extensive, nonpartisan bureaucracy to implement the law.

Developed countries tend to be republics nowadays because the nationstate ideology overcame monarchism 200 years ago. In the future, you may see nationstates decay as globalism/corporatism/"movementism" become more effective administrative apparatuses.
>>
Ok, there have been studies to suggest that as a country gets richer, the more the middle class pushes for democracy. Certainly this idea was pushed by a political scientist called Seymour Lipsett. But as we have seen recently this isn't the entirely the case.

We see around the world incredibly rich states existing with very little democracy. For instance the Arab Oil Sheikdoms, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea until the 1990s and Taiwan until the 1990s as well.

There's no real correlation that says firstly democracy=wealth or even the reverse of wealth=democracy. When rich countries don't democratise there are usually three reasons why they don't.

1) The authoritarian regime makes enough money to pay off its people, i.e Saudi Arabia, China
2) The authoritarian goes to great lengths to prevent democratisation, i.e South Korea until the 1990s, Taiwan
3) a combination of both, i.e Singapore

So it's really a complex relationship between money, power relations and civic culture.
>>
democracy purportedly started out in greece (scratches head). by modern standards, they are...what? average most likely; not super rich, that's for sure

and it started being practiced well before empires were established on it (united states, eruopean union, ussr (not democracy for real, but a simulacra for sure))

so, no, i don't think wealth determines it per se; i.e. pursuit of democracy.

does democracy promote enormous wealth necessarily? no, as above cases show. capitalism promotes wealth generation; that's essentially what it is. might as well be called "wealthism."

so the point of this exercise is that you can't have an economy without a political system and vice versa; but you can't attribute democracy to wealth nor wealth to democracy

>exactly 5 sec after reading this you are transported back in time to Rome circa 100AD, when the empire was roughly at its largest.

>Only thing that goes with you is whatever you are wearing right now
How do you gain power wealth and safety?

What knowledge or skills do you possess that could immediately set you apart?

(inb4 : ill draw a gun, dur hur. without knowing EXACTLY how to build and manafacture all the different parts, its useless)

Engineering feats.

Most people alive understand the principle of mechanical energy and thermal energy. Show your engineering marvels by building mechanical pulley systems, hydro power, bicycle, etc

Literally any sort of mechanical device will a genius invention to them. The wheel barrow for example is a perfect example that China invented later on(or maybe around same time).

>gun
While gunpoweder might be hard to do on your own, you could effectively utilize the fluid dynamics to create hydrolics based weapons or tools/systems. System of elevators can be done using primitive hydralics systems.

Well, with my superior knowledge of the modern day world, I would most likely become some sort of genius.

Current history shows that his diagnosis of the process of capital is VERY correct.

For over a century, his prediction of workers wages falling did not come true.
But for the past 40 years, wages have either dropped or stagnated.

We live in the world Marx and Engels wrote about over 150 years ago.

He actually was supported by Engels, who ran his father's company.

His wife, Jenny supported her husband and believed in his cause.

Marx was a brilliant man who read and spoke multiple languages.

Just because you disagree with Marxian theory is no reason to call him foolish.

His influence on the world is permanent.

Why is Saint Louis so popular, or even considered a saint for that matter? Hell, he wasn't even the greatest French monarch in living memory considering Louis the Lion was his father and the impeccable Philippe Auguste his grandfather. Is "he was really, really Catholic" his only claim to fame?

His claim to fame is that I'm named after him.
>>
>>1280685
He's identical to Richard the Lionheart.

Absolutely shit king, but he went on crusade and did things for religion, that's all that mattered to medieval people so they idolised the fuck out of him. They were basically like idiots today idolising celebrities for doing fucking nothing.
>>

Context. Being a good Catholic was the most important virtue and the main life objective of every man.

Do you welcome modern life or not? It seems that technologies such as self driving cars, Google, etc. save you time and reduce low level problems (while stopping you from getting good at low level skills e.g. no one will drive in 100 years). But then you have stuff like downloading information in to your brain, getting an entire day's nutrients and calories in pill form, robots doing all minimum wage jobs (even without AI) and people wonder what they will do with their lives or where their motivation would come from in a utopia.

I think I'm fine in general with it but it really solidified my nihilism. 100 years ago I could've cared about whether or not I get an education or lunch. This year I have everything but I'm supposed to care about poor people and I can't. In 100 years either everyone will have equal access or I would have been told to care about brain information download speeds for poor people.

That's ignoring apocalyptic scenarios, which I think are comforting for people to imagine will happen

In one sense, no. Modern society is creating crybabies who have never known difficulty and will kick up a fuss over the slightest thing.
>>
Yea, I'm definitely one of the losers of the modern age.
I might have been one in the losers in early history anyway.

Change is inevitable though, only a fool would reject the new world, as fucked as it can seem the world has been much worse.
