What's the most historical, unbiased account of Vlad's life?

I assume stories about him eating roasted toddlers and using blood as a dipping sauce are propaganda.

I want someone to tell me about one period of american history in which they where not at war and how did this work out for them in economic terms. (20th-21st century)

I do this because I believe american economy is based on war, and that is why their government will start a war against anyone, even if it is against drug cartels or the islamic state.

I do not state this as a truth, I just want to find examples that might contradictorias what I think.

Peaceful, logical discussion please.

Is there an escape from physicalsim? I know there are supposed criticisms but it does seem like the world is mechanistic and deterministic. Things happen accroding to certain rules we can predict. People react in predicatable ways..
If you suddenly see a car about to drive over you you jump out of the way etc...Not only are we predictable in our culturally dependant reactions but also on an instictive level.
Could this all be a result of a severly entranched physicalist set of physicalist related world views?
Can I rethink certain fundamentals about How i view reality and life to escape this seemingly inescapable physicalist deterministic world view?
Things like the value we assign to predictability would need to shift. Why is predictabiltiy important to us? Because through things that predict behaviour of phenomena we can solve certain problems.
We however define the problems ourselves.
We define the problems, we define the standards for what a good solution to them is and we find those solutions ourselves, all in parallel.
Is there an escape?

Where the fuck did you get that from? For the last 100 years western science and philosophy have both pretty much reached an agreement on how analytical thinking is pretty much wrong and the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts
>>
>>584221
In what sense?
>>
>>584221
>the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts
Many mathematicians would say that is deficient.

Why did Voltaire think this? He once said about Catholicism:
>the most ridiculous, the most absurd, and the most bloody religion which has ever infected this world
So why would he think that we need a god?

because it's what takes us apart from other animals - we are always trying to make sense of the chaos that life is and we wear clothes.

for some there are no immutable rules, no universal laws and no inteligent concept in the universe and nature is seen as a chaotic element following random paths... and this is too much to bear for some so they decided to believe all that ever happened in the universe is all part of a major plot decided by someone we can't see but sense

So we all know about the gladiators, but which other cultures had bloodsports?

What were they?

>>
>>584100
Aztecs had straight up blood-everything. Their actual sports would end with a sacrifice. This isn't including the custom of kidnapping other tribes' warriors, lashing them to a tree or stone, giving them a shitty weapon, and expecting them to defend themselves from highly skilled eagle warriors.

The ancient norse has Glima, which was like grapple style wrestling... that ended with someone's spine severed on a fucking rock.

Does anyone listen to this podcast? I'm on the Punic Wars episodes. It's actually pretty enjoyable.

I never studied rome though so I don't know how accurate it is. He claims to provide a historian consensus on Rome, but often takes time to present conflicting accounts.

Any thoughts?

How different was the approach towards philosophy throughout history? Specifically in Western (what can be categorized as Western) societies. Take for example ancient Greece and Rome, did philosophical schools influence the politics or people? Or during the middle ages, when Christianity was favored over pagan philosophies, how much did it actually affect? The treaties during the enlightenment era?

What I'm basically asking is how much did philosophy actually matter in shaping the zeitgeist? And how was philosophy expressed? By expressed, take for example two contemporary philosophical fashions, schools of thought - call it whatever you like:

"Social Justice" (not just feminism) and the "Redpill".

Well shit my other half of the post didn't copy and I can't be assed to write it all down again. But what I'm asking is basically, how come the aforementioned world views, whether you agree them to be philosophies or not, affect public discourse (on the internet and/or IRL), and "Social Justice" affecting academia, school systems and public opinion, while actual philosophers do not? inb4 Zizek, what he says hardly influences anything.

I suppose this is partially due to viral media, you no longer need to write a well thought out book or essay, all you need is a blog and a keyboard or a camera and a youtube account, and, like magic, you suddenly affect public opinion more than any philosopher.

Might add later something else that I maybe forgot from my original post

anyway discuss

>affect public discourse (on the internet and/or IRL), and "Social Justice" affecting academia, school systems and public opinion

While having no coherent work or "the" book behind it. Obviously it's because it's widespread and appealing ideas, but that's the thing, did a situation like this occur in the past as well?

You have a philosopher jerking off in the dark writing some would be brilliant idea, say Plato, Schopenhauer or Locke (just a random example) but his ideas don't reflect his contemporary society.

Intellectual discourse is shaped mainly by salaried, professional intellectuals. Actual philosophers tend to lie outside that narrow sphere/clique.

Intellectuals and academics have historically drifted towards socialism and social justice because of a desire to inhabit and design societies where the talents of the intellectual/academic will always be in demand:

He is generally seen as a manipulator for his alleged pulling of the strings, even were it were only true to a lesser extent.

Also, the aristocracy saw him as an uppity strannik, who more or less invaded the top class.

Hi lads,

There was a Zoroastrianism thread a couple of days ago asking what it meant to be Zoroastrian. Someone had written several sentences that I completely forgot to save.. It included something about gluttony and just general values. It was pretty well written. Does anyone remember what it was?

Are you talking about this?

To ride, shoot straight and speak the truth
Moderation in worldly pleasures, both celibacy and lechery, gluttony and temperance is not encouraged
Charity and love for all human beings
Industry and honest toil
Forgiveness, mercy and tolerance

Arrogance, greed, petty quarrels, wrath and jealousy are discouraged

Isn't the "ugh there ain't no objective morals there's no god what do" existential crisis just puerile? If you can't even accept morals as an historical ideological product or a tacit pact for coexistance, I agree you should kill yourself.
The "shiet life is real boring and tasteless" crisis is much deeper imo

>>
Deriving your morality from dumb shit like cathegorical imperative is just as dumb.
>>
Morals are simply humans being able to coexist and advance society. I'm not being reductionist; if we had no morals, there would be no cohesiveness, and thus no advancement.

I don't see what's so hard to understand. It's an evolutionary trait. Humans work better together, as simple as that. Nihilism is just a product of not needing to work to live 24/7 so we have time to actually reflect on how insignificant we are. We still eat, fuck and shit like all other beings, so we've just constructed "morals" because we have the capacity to do so.
