To be honest, there isn't a good military history yet. If you know nothing about the Congo wars right now and want a good introduction, I'd recommend Dancing in the Glory of Monsters. It tells the story of the Congo wars and Rwandan "genocide" through first person accounts almost exclusively. It can be a little bit preachy and off topic, and personally I don't think the author is a very good writer, but nevertheless it's the best introduction to the Congo around at the moment.
If you want to continue reading, then I'd recommend Prunier's Africa's World War.

Are humans happier now then they were in say, the middle ages? I feel like even though they were pretty "oppressed", they still lived joyful and meaningful lives. It seems like every person was serving a purpose that was bigger than them, and something like that is what the human brain was hardwired for. Now we live in a super nihilist society that puts so much emphasize on becoming rich with material wealth. I know happy is very subjective, but what are your thoughts?

I think in general the amount of happiness a human experiences is pretty stable regardless of conditions. When you consider that at the end of the day its just a chemical system keeping us content to be working and feeding ourselves while we go through life.
I assume people in the middle ages counted their blessings and accepted the bad things in life just like we do, while taking for granted things that appeared normal to them (like we do with say our smartphones or abundant food supply).
I certainly don't experience added happiness from owning a smartphone, even though it objectively improves certain aspects of my life.

Qasr Amra is an Umayyad castle from the 8th century in Jordan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is considered one of the most important examples of early Islamic art and architecture, with beautiful and unique frescoes on the inside walls.
In 2014 it went trough restoration process by the Italian Higher Institute of Conservation and Restoration, in collaboration with the World Monuments Fund (WMF) and the Department of Antiquities of Jordan.
Yet when one compare pictures of the frescoes from before and after the restorations thoroughly, one notice considerable and alarming differences in the subjects of the painting, to the point of alteration their original meaning.
Most noticeably, the famous bathing woman figure had her headscarf altered to curly hair and her nipple erased, turning her into a man.
The end result of these alterations is a desecration, rather then restoration, of the fresco and it's original meaning. This should alarm any person who cares about preserving our human heritage.
