Why do historians use this term "Scramble for Africa" as if its a treasure or object without any self-determination or will of its own to manifest via the peoples who inhabit it? No, the continent Africa, and its exploitation and enslavement, has been resigned to the status of "the last box of pizza pops in the frozen food isle" and not one person seeks to change that

I resent it

who cares, they certainly didn't.

there were different values and goals during their time period that are anachronistic to your own, so don't try and pervert it because it makes you feel bad.

>as if its a treasure or object without any self-determination or will of its own to manifest via the peoples who inhabit it?
Because that's how it was viewed by the people scrambling for it, and how they documented their doing so?

The self-determination and will of Africa is overrated anyway. Good government > Self government when the choice is between Rhodesia or Zimbabwe, and I say that as someone who spends half their time campaigning for the self-determination of his own nation. (because mine demonstrates the ability to withstand foreign exploitation instead of collapsing into coup after coup after coup.)
>>
Because it was valuable land and resources in the eyes of colonists. The "scramble for Africa" sounds like a fight for goodies because it was a fight for goodies as they saw it.

It's fucked up, but welcome to history. If we don't remember the mistakes of the past, how are we to learn from them? The name isn't the issue, the mindset it refers to is the bad bit. Teach people the history and point out the errors, simple as that. It's all we can do without misrepresenting the past.

There's a meme in society of some kind of entrepreneurial post-capitalist industrial-scientific "productivity" thing, and they are expressing the meme because they are demi-conscious memebuoys floating on a slurry sea of currents you can only see if you zoom out
It's exhausting even trying to give an answer to this question. You need to like phenomenologically bracket every single word and write a book explaining that they aren't even people. They aren't even conscious. They aren't even having "opinions". STEM people are like robots with human skin stretched over them. To say "they are dismissive of the humanities" is implicitly to admit I think there's a "they". STEM people don't even fucking exist. They are a statistical gaseous nebula of random particles wafting across continents and periodically expressing junk they picked up along the way. Why would you even talk to them?
Talking to a STEMfag is literally like being some kind of Buddha, ascending reality, then coming back down and talking to bees who were dudes in past lives. I'm sure these bee niggas can be saved or whatever, but let's just wait until they're back in human form. Don't walk around going "BEES, STOP BUZZING, PUT DOWN THAT POLLEN, LISTEN TO ME ABOUT HOW EVERY CONCEPTUAL CATEGORY YOU HAVE FOR EVEN THINKING OF THINGS WAS SHAPED FOR YOU BY AN UNCONSCIOUS SLUDGE OF MEMETIC POLYALLOY THAT FLOWS IN PREDICTABLE CURRENTS FROM YEAR TO YEAR THROUGH THE HIVE IN WHICH YOU WERE CONCEIVED"

What are the 'feels' involved with the Treaty of Trianon? Especially Hungarians, who lost 70% of Hungary's territory and 60% of its population?

Seems quite brutal on paper, how did each nation involved react?

Irish Rebellion against the British-was it justified?
Asking in terms of the whole island, but especially interested in how justified the Troubles in the North were, specifically on whether action was necessary to stop any oppression the Irish people in Ulster were under.

Probably.

NICRA had tried peacefully moving for change, and had been met with paramilitary violence.

After the first clashes, the British security forces interned thousands of Catholics and precisely zero Protestants, despite the fact that the IRA had only stepped in because Catholic civilians were unable to defend themselves.

Be warned, this topic brings out angry Britbongs. It's like talking about the Donbass conflict around Russians.
>>

>NICRA had tried peacefully moving for change, and had been met with paramilitary violence

Really? By the same groups that fought in the Troubles, like the UVF/UDA?

>angry britbongs
My experience in trying to gather information on this from britbongs or unionists is "IRA are terrorists who all deserved to die, unionists good guys irish are bad" so I tend to prefer outside resources or irish people for information.

I've heardthat the IRA in the troubles lost the "we're protecting irish people" idea and went a bad gang-tier toward the middle or end. Any truth to that?
I feel like there's that many splinters that it must be hard to tell.

>By the same groups that fought in the Troubles, like the UVF/UDA?

You've got to think of the Protestant paramilitaries as like the KKK in the old south. The Royal Ulster Constabulary had next to no Catholics in it and operated as an apartheid police force, in concert with the paramilitaries.

Later on, it would be revealed that the police and military of Northern Ireland shared information with the paramilitaries, and in some cases off duty cops and soldiers carried out the killings themselves under the auspices of the RUC.

>I've heardthat the IRA in the troubles lost the "we're protecting irish people" idea and went a bad gang-tier toward the middle or end. Any truth to that?

This is mostly true after the Good Friday Agreement, where most of the members of the IRA that were there for political reasons agreed to the ceasefires.

Any IRA activities you hear about going on today are the work of RIRA, who are a glorified mob family.

The actual PIRA engaged in things like smuggling, protection rackets, and forced disappearances, but they did manage to kill less civilians proportionally than the actual security forces did.

All I know about them is that they were basically some Mad Max style gangs that came out of nowhere (no previous historical mentions) and wrecked most of civilization in the fertile crescent in the late Bronze age over the course of a century, destroying like 90% of settlements and replenishing their losses with the displaced populations, and only the Egyptians managed to resist them because the Nile allowed them to concentrate their defenses in one direction.

Many historians think the sea people didn't actually exist, or at least we're extremely exaggerated. The bronze age collapse was most likely caused by economic failure rather then warfare, the sea people could just be an easy explanation for ancient people who didn't understand economics.
>>
>>1353491
That's utter bullshit though.
Sea peoples are documented by nunerous ancient sources like Egyptians, Hittities and the Levantine people

I guess I am.

I found out my university's library had a copy of Ancient Greece - A political, Social and Cultural History, which is surprising considering I'm a spic and English books aren't quite common over here (be it library's or books stores, unless they're specialized or the books are extremely popular).

I don't think I can get most of the others though, so what I can't find online I won't be able to read. At least not in English, anyway.

That one is really interesting. Outside of the regions with frequent civil disorders such as Poland or Caucasus, weapons were sold without restrictions, only consequences of firearm misuse were regulated. However, there was a crackdown after 1905's revolution and non-hunting weapons started to be sold only with a license. Pic related is a Russian ad for pistols. I'm not sure about the price range but I think it's affordable for the time, a well-qualified factory worker earned from 25 to 50 rubles per month.
>>
>>1351687
>Nazi Germany
If you were German and didn't have criminal record, mental condition, "political" problems etc. you could get any gun you wanted as long as you could afford it.
>Royal France
There were some bans/regulations centred around pistols to reduce the quantity and mortality of duels but they could never be enforced because administrative reach of ANY country back then was rather small.
>>
>>1351687
>Austria-Hungary
In law from 1852 were forbidden daggers, stilettos, trombones, tercerolas (kind of pistol) under 18 cm, pneumatic guns, grenades, petards, rockets and hidden weapons which could be used for insidious attack (like swordcanes). Latter were added probably skipped cannons but revolvers under 18 cm were not longer automatically banned. Other weapons were allowed in adequate unsuspicious amount.
On the other hand caring of weapons was regulated, gun license was issued only to unproblematic persons. People who had good reason to carry guns like gamekeepers and policemen in uniform, or members of sport shooter organization at shooting range didn't were exception.
