Why aren't World's Fairs a thing anymore? Yes they exists but no landmarks are getting built because of them, no groundbreaking inventions or spectacles. Not to mention that beautiful art.

Is there any philosopher, philosophical concept or school of philosophy that can be used to analyze and discuss (or just say something intelligent) about video games?

Some things I had in mind are Aristotle's idea of practical reason and the irreducability of experience, Kant's notion of imagination as "uninterested interest", and some theories of imitation and learning. Even Marx can come in handy here.

Since I'm not even a gamer myself, I'm more interested in the theoretical or reflexive aspects of gaming here. However, feel free to break it down to genres, history, and so on. You can also bring up philosophical ideas that are expressed in games, implicitly of explicitly.

>>
Games are fucking games. Buzzfeed articles are not proper critique.
>>
Games are, for all effect, simulations.
With that in mind, any philosophical theories that to apply to simulations (or sports, for that matter) also apply to videogames, if only by extension.
Since you were so kind as to stamp the great 'stache on your thread image, we can start with Nietzche:
Nietzche says any form of illusion weakens you and should be avoided. Therefore, it can be said that Nietzche strongly oppose the existence of videogames.
>>
Also, on "Republic", Plato discourses on how necessary sports are for an ideal civilization as a form of self improvement. If you are willing to consider videogames a sport, then Plato is pro-gaming.

So I'm new to the board and I'm debating if I should stay or not.

Have you actually learned something through /his/ or do you just come here to show how much you know?

If so, what's the most valuable thing you've learned here? How valuable do you rate the board in general?
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Neither. I just come here to have stupid arguments.
>>
>>884826
Learned a little bit about philosophy here, and occasionally someone brings up a subject I read up about so I understand them.

But most of this board is just Catholics and Orthodox arguing with one fundamentalist protestant
>>
Ive gotten some great book recommendations, however I have also run into the most disingenuous and deceitful people on 4chan. However if you stay out of the religious threads and to a lesser extent Rhodesia/ Revanchism ones you should be set.

If the United States and South Vietnam had invaded North Vietnam they would have won the Vietnam War.

in a purely military sense? probably, though it would still be very costly, without a staging ground and point to receive supplies from china or russia, the communists would have a much harder time fighting and effective guerilla conflict.

though diplomatically its unthinkable, which is why it never happened

So I figured Id have a better chance getting a real answer on on of these threads than some of the others. I am obsessed with masks. All kinds of masks. Not so much horror masks. Not so much like eyes wide shut kind of masks or anything. But I look at my walls and I count 6. I am fascinated by them. If I go to a history museum its the the thing I look at the most. When I went to london I spent so much time looking at the masks of each culture I hardly looked at anything else. Is there a term for this? I think I understand the psychology behind it. The anonymity. The fact that I am whoever I want to be behind a mask and if my other body features are hiding than I am whatever image I want to be. I am not really ashamed by this. More fascinated. I get no sexual gratification or anything like that from it. So is there a term for what I am describing? I am also not a bad looking guy and girlfriends would sometimes get upset if I wore a mask for halloween between they wanted people to know it was me with them in the picture. Anyway was just curious.

I too am fascinated by masks. I think you can lose yourself and become anything or anyone with a mask on. There is also an intimidation factor. I don't know if there is any psychology term for it, but I always loved dressing up in masks in Halloween as a little kid. Pic related, watched Hellboy countless times as a teenager just for the Kroenen scenes.
>>
I know oni masks are one of the things I think are fucking sick. Japan has some sick masks going on.

Have this exact same attraction. For me, it has something to do with being simultaneously human and non-human, being able to adopt a role that goes beyond normal experience. I guess also it's a way of giving up my ego.

If you went back in time to 1900 with your fully functional laptop (no internet of course) and handed it over to the government, would history be drastically altered due to reverse engineering, or would they be unable to work anything out?

Presuming the laptop battery could be charged, that is.

This, Quantum physics, pretty the theories that let us use computers today, weren't even known then.

Einstein wouldn't have calculated his theory of relativity for another decade at that point.

They might manage to figure out semiconductors, but the adequate silicon refinement technology wouldn't be available for like seven more decades.

What would another world war do for modern society? Would it be positive or negative in the long run?

Depends where it is. It would fuck us up right properly, though; all the asbestos that would be released from the inevitable destruction would probably kill just as many people in the long run as the war itself.

you tryin to tell me there's ever been a world war that was positive or what?
>>

I don't think you realize just how profoundly different everything today would be if WW2 in particular had not happened.

Were the changes more positive than negative? Nobody can say, but you would be a fool if you were to claim that they didn't at the very least pave the road for quite a few very useful things.

Have white Nationalism ever had any popular support at any time in History?
As I get it all sorts of nationalism through history have been either religious or culturally based.
Not even the Nazis or the KKK was much for white nationalism in the end, having some white group that they hated either because their genes, their religion or their culture.

Anything from Bronze age European cultures is welcomed.

Pic related a Nuraghe from Sardinia, there are more than 7000 of them still standing, archeologists theorized there were around 10000 during the bronze age, they were mainly built between 1600 and 1100 bc.

Their original function is still hotly discussed.

They almost surely were not used as mansions, during that time people lived in either circular stone huts, or sometimes rectangular houses with different rooms, but the latter were less usual.

They probaby were not fortresses either at least most of them, except maybe the castle looking ones like Barumini or Arrubiu.

So it's been theorized by some that they were astronomical observatories and some interesting light pehomena occur in many of them, though I'm not an expert on the subject.

In some cases, like pic related, a settlement was built around the structure, in this case we have a Nuraghe consisting on many different towers and layers of walls, built in a span of different centuries during the late bronze age, this is one of the cases in which the structure could have been used as a fortress, Barumini (the nuraghe I'm talking about) is a UNESCO site.

The Nuraghi weren't the only type of monument built by the Nuragic civilization.

The water well temples are also quite common, even though less numerous than the Nuraghi, there is still quite a good number of them.

Some of them, like pic related (Santa Cristina) display a good knowledge of architecture, but not only that, apparently they were used as astronomical observatories too, according to astronomer Arnold Lebeuf St.Cristina Nuragic well temple was the most precise astronomical monument of the time in Europe: http://www.academia.edu/2336031/The_nuragic_well_of_Santa_Cristina_Paulilatino_Oristano_Sardinia._A_verification_of_the_astronomical_hypothesis

Is there any branch of Christianity that exclusively follows the teachings of Jesus?

What I mean by that is the Old Testament is mostly garbage that can be dismissed offhand. Also, most of the New Testament after Jesus died is garbage too (Paul is a poser who most likely never even had a vision)

I like the teachings of Jesus, but not much else. Is there a Christianity for me?

Marcionism may be the thing for you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcionism

>Marcion believed Jesus was the savior sent by God, and Paul the Apostle was his chief apostle, but he rejected the Hebrew Bible and the God of Israel. Marcionists believed that the wrathful Hebrew God was a separate and lower entity than the all-forgiving God of the New Testament. This belief was in some ways similar to Gnostic Christian theology; notably, both are dualistic, that is, they posit opposing gods, forces, or principles: one higher, spiritual, and "good", and the other lower, material, and "evil" (compare Manichaeism), in contrast to other Christian views that "evil" has no independent existence, but is a privation or lack of "good",[2] a view shared by the Jewish theologian Moses Maimonides.[3]

How is it even possible to be Platonist and non-dualist? Those who say mathematical objects exist and constitute another reality are clearly dualist. However, when one explains what dualism means, these people are quick to claim that they aren't dualist, but still defend Platonism.
How can one be so inconsistent?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Isn't this "dualism" stuff some meme that only people on 4chan's /his/ care about that doesn't really affect philosophy in any way?
>>
>>883880
No.
>>
Also, Platonism is fucking retarded.
Just as psychology majors who have low IQ tend to love buffoons like Jung instead of modern, empirical psychology, low tier philosophers and mathematicians love Platonism.

I guess a bit of both. Wasn't the downfall of the WRE (and the total united empire in the first place) simply due to overextension? When the vandals, goths, huns whatever finally realized this it was game over.

How off am I? I'd love to learn more.

There's a number of factors in the fall. I personally lean on Dialectus and the Formation of the Tetrarchy as the catalyst for fragmentation.
