Has nationalism actually ever caused wars? I hear this very often, but it seems kinda trivial to me.

Yes, of course. Wars of national liberation are a perfect example.
However, most wars and skirmishes that are associated with nationalism are actually due to imperialism and colonialism, two phenomena that long predate modern nationalism and on some level are even at odds with it.

Not too sure about the Balkans. Most of it was just countries deciding to leave the federal republic and Yugoslavia not accepting the secession. Srpska wanted to secede as well. To be clear, I don't think separatism is the same as nationalism.
