the only problem i see with it is how they used to assign mentality traits to populations depending on climate, which has been debunked and pretty much abandoned, but the relation betveen a culture and the enviroment it reproduces in is kind of a obvious thing
thing is geographic determinism used to be more about local people and explaining away cultural and economic diferences by crap like 'warm climate makes you lazy', than realy about analizing how some specific climate and geography sets conditions for development of say, forms of architecture or complex economy

Europe was stunned.
The Prussians were living in the past.
They deployed and fought as if Friederich was still in command.
Napoleon's better trained and more mobile forces took apart the stiff formations of the Prussians.
Complacent army resting on long dead victories versus most aggressive military on earth.

Some might have done that, but the resources were too much and too much was expected of them for ALL of the settlers to get along with the natives.
It's kind of like asking what if a river wound around native villages instead of running straight through and spoiling them. It may have helped but the discovery of the new world was like a dam breaking. In the end the huge influx of people, whether more were respectful or not, is bound to displace, inconvenience, and outright kill millions over the years.

Do you think the world as a whole would be "better" (or better off) if every current civilization was a first world country or a third world country?
Well if every country had a massive pile of assets magically summoned to contribute to their gdp, the world would be better. There would be more international competition, but the quality of life would increase.

Depends on your definition of "better".
I would prefer that we lived in pre-industrial world, but that's not necessarily better. I'm just the type of person that doesn't like most of what the modern world has to offer. That doesn't void the lack of quality healthcare or easy access to education at the time though. Still, I think people were happier before consumerism and factories. Life in an agrarian society wasn't so bad near the end of the middle ages.
