But I believe that it has something to do with the fact that Jewry in Europe weren't barred from practicing banking for the purposes of profit. Whereas Christians were, (not sure about Islam though.) This caused Christian Europeans to be suspicious of Jews, which was exacerbated by Jews becoming quite wealthy due to these practices, despite their small population relative to non-Jews on the continent.
