Is the sun rising or setting?
The earth is rotating on an axis causing the illusion of the sun rising from the east in the morning and setting in the west in the evening.
>>1297215
The sun is traveling around the galactic center like a speck of dust in a newly-flush toilet. We're on a spinning object, constantly plummeting toward it while on just a trajectory to miss every time.
Optimism and pessimism are for dreamers. Realists go home to fuck the prom queen.

What would had happened if the good guys won the hundred years war and formed the united kingdom of Britannia and France?
The royals of England would never stop speaking and identifying themselves as French and the English language would be exctint today.
>>1297120
Alright now that the frog butthurt has settled lets discuss the Geo-political benefits like no world wars or napoleon
>>1297125
The English monarchs only started to use English as their main tongue in the hundred years war, aquiring land with a much bigger population than their own would probably just give them even more reasons to stay French.
Favorite passage of Philosophical Text?
"From this point of view one might consider that the appropriate form of address between man and man ought to be , not monsieur, sir, but fellow sufferer, compagnon de misères. However strange this may sound it corresponds to the nature of the case, makes us see other men in a true light and reminds us of what are the most necessary of all things : tolerance, patience, forbearance and charity, which each of us needs and which each of us therefore owes"
From Schopenhauer's essay "On the Suffering of the World".

Why are philosophists so try hards? Why can't they just write normal and not try to make their text sound as hard as possible?

There isn't one. It's just chance that we're here and alive. Pleasure is nice though, so go and have fun, and remember the universal rule of life: Don't be a dick.

What will I miss out on doing one vs the other? (Just enough credits left to complete one.)
If I do English, I'm afraid I'll miss education in the ideas of thinkers from other traditions (eg German, French philosophy).
If I do philosophy, I'm worried I'll miss out on education in some grand accounts of muh human condition (which is important to me), though I don't know whether academic English really goes into that at all.
Thoughts?
I want Baker-sensei to spank me
In most American universities you'll be doing a lot of analytic stuff, so that means logic tables and sperging about math and language, it's not all phenomenology and human condition unfortunately. Where I go, a pretty analytic university overall, there's still plenty of existentialism and philosophy of art courses and stuff but you can't get around taking symbolic logic and metaphysics at some point.
English of course is going to focus more on literature while Philosophy will have a bent more towards critical thinking. Both will give you a substantial writing education.
I don't know my man, I guess it comes down to taste and what you plan to do after school is out.

Why are so many Christians also patriots and nationalists, even though the teachings of the Bible directly contradict the concept of nations (with Jesus himself declaring that he will strike down the national borders upon his second coming)?
Moreover, why is it so hard to realize that the Bible is mostly a collection of allegorical moral and philosophical teachings, which are in no way special and severely detached from the reality of the modern world? It is in no way a true account of the world.
Religion is mostly used by those who seek to justify shitty policies and...

Religion is a right-hand of politics. Always was, always will.
If you think something's changed you're deluded.

*Protestants
Protestants are pseudo-Germans. They have no capacity in their brains to learn anything but racism, xenophobia, imperialism and anti-semitism.

Catholic leftist, probably detected.
I'm a deist centrist btw, what do you think about guns?
How come France has become a third rate power? Like even in Europe nowadays they barely have a voice. In world politics the UK is far more important than they.
What happened after De Gaulle?
>>1296695
they were mainly important because they made up such a large percentage of europe's population. by the end of the 19th century this stopped being true
>>1296695
You're simply a deluded Briton
Europe in general is irrelevant nowdays, but the two most relevant among them are Germany and France
Britain is the pinacle of irrelevance, and basically an US satellite state
>>1296695
>UK is far more important than they.
What are you on about?
At least France got the power and will to interdependently pursue its own foreign policy in North Africa, Britain will only do whatever the USA allows and asks them to.

Is it philosophically possible NOT to be depressed after accepting these facts?
It's pretty liberating tee bee ache
I've seen these threads numerous times, is this a single gorillaposter who makes the same philosophy threads over and over?

Being wrong all the time must be depressing, yes.
I remember reading once about how the entire story about Jesus and Barabbas being presented to the crowd and Barabbas being chosen and the entire "his blood shall be on our hands!" was born from a mistranslation: namely, that the name Barabbas simply means 'son of the Father' (bar-Abbas) in Hebrew, and is not an actual given name. However, it could have been en epiphet, and one likely used by Jesus, such that when the crowd yelled for 'Barabbas!', they were actually clamoring for the release of Jesus.
How true is this, /his/? If true, wouldn't...

So we just paint our dummies into different colors, form lines, and command them to stay against each one and shoot. Also they can charge... And sometimes cavalry shows up... Also artillery shells the motherfuckers as they stand close enough to each other.
What sense does it make?
Wouldn't it be better to use some kind of a disguise? Shoot from the cover and attack in small groups?
That's 18th century style.
Napoleonic style is more dynamic.
>>1296390
I mean those kinds of rifles are only considered accurate in mass volleys. You could go for a stealthy approach, but how would that work with 20+ people? Not only that but after you fire your position is immediately compromised.

Well I dunno how bout you pick up a fucking book and stop making this thread every few hours?
In greatest and most likely probability, Jesus was nothing more than an apocalyptic preacher in 1st century Judea who taught about either the need for the reform of Judaism or that he was the Jewish messiah and that the end times were near (or perhaps a combination of both). However, he was most likely put to death under orders of the Romans for causing agitation, and either through a 'pious' crime or actual displacement of his body/grave (either by mistake or grave robbery or some other method), was believed to have either resurrected or ascended into Heaven like...
