On he 72 virgins
>Other details of the houris that have been pointed out by religious scholars include that the houris would not urinate, defecate, become pregnant or menstruate.[12] It has also been said that all houris are "transparent to the marrow of their bones",[13][14] "eternally young",[15] "hairless except the eyebrows and the head",[15] "pure"[14] and "beautiful".[14]
Damn, where do I sign up? Shia Islam says I don't have to be a martyr for that, just do good deeds.
I don't think Sunni Islam requires martyrs for that either.
Any man who enters heavan gets multiple wives and houris from what I remember.

Hot damn, that's cool. Wish they didn't take their religion so seriously so you could get fun trashy Islamic mythology novels the way you get trashy Christian mythology novels about the Rapture or fighting demons. Seems like they would be fun reads.

Which historical period had the best aesthetic?

Hidden by Ptolemy after the jealous maniac Aristotle poisoned and killed his star pupil. It was likely in Alexandria. or perhaps silentely interred with Hephastion
Hey guys,
I am doing this project and I might need your help.
It's related to nation borders, basically irredentism in Europe.
Perception of ones greater country, f.e. Greater Croatia, or Greater Portugal.
I found some information on Wiki,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irredentism
But i am not sure if those i should trust that much, and thus i came here.
Could Europeans check their countries on this link?
And report back if this is valid - peoples opinion. Or just history that nobody cares about anymore.
Or adjustments to existing...

Ofc if your country is not on the list. please drop some info here.
>>372137
Here you go. Everyone(relevant) wins.

Modern irredentism is about getting back those lands, still inhabited by Slovenes.
>pic related: 1848 map that is still relevant today
What reason is there to care about anything at all besides one's basic animal instincts?
What reason is there to care about one's basic animal instincts?
>it's a nerd with thousands of hours on steam is having an existential crisis episode
>>372110
Animal instincts don't need a reason for you to care about them. Things like hunger and pain demand to be felt.
Was there ever are more prosperous country than Japan in the 1980s? Seemed they were going to take over the world...
>>372055
And then the Asian crash happened. And they've never really recovered. Certainly not to the meteoric levels of growth they had before the crash.
>>372055
I miss 80's Japan.

I agree. Also, there's definitely a dearth of cultural/social history on this board.
ITT: We discuss how things might have been if lennin hadn't died and stalin had never gotten into power.
>>372008
Things would've been exactly the same.
The bolsheviks were a bunch of ruthless thugs. Lenin was a murderous psychopath.
>>372008
Very much the same except without the social conservatism of Stalin. So it would be homosexual Communism.
Nazis would have stormed forward without too much opposition. Stalin's brutality was really the only thing keeping the Soviet union from shattering when Hitler and friends came knocking.
Hey /his/, first time poster. I've been lurking for the past few days and you all seem somewhat reasonable so I thought to ask; what are the essential books to read as primers to history? Like there's the classic literature that influences basically all of literature that follows it, what are the seminal books when it comes to huge ideas like art, religion, war, etc.
Pic not related, posting from new phone.

Philosophy fag here. Copleston's History of Western Philosophy. Much better scholar and historian than Russel.

HE SAID HISTORY YOU FUCKING RETARD NOT PHILOSOPHY HOLY SHIT

OP here, thanks for the contribution. It looks like a good place to start.
if england never got involved via the belgium technicality, did germany have a chance?
>>371491
No, because as your pic explains very well, Belgium was just a pretext
Britain had an alliance with France and Russia, and would have gotten involved regardless
>>371491
In the west, probably but that crucial gap and the lack if those corps would've prevented the Germans from getting into Paris.
I don't see Britain sitting this out even if Germany didn't invade Belgium. Only if the Germans don't annex any French or colonial territory. The same applies to any inch of Russia
>>371491
Britain was also interested on fucking germany's shit up.
After the battle of hastings in 1066, when the english were defeated and overthrown by the normans, and england became a norman state up until now, arent english people not actually english people, just normans? Why is it still england and not just land of the normans? It was completely conquered and anglo saxon england was wiped out, so why is it still england, and why are the people still considered english?
Bump im fairly curious myself
>>371445
Because the Anglo-Saxons/English themselves weren't wiped out?
>>371445
because the vast majority of people are still descended from anglo saxons
You wake up tomorrow and find yourself having been transported 1000 years back in time. What information could you impart to the people then that would actually be useful to them?
I'm guessing just about nothing.
>>371372
>I'm guessing just about nothing.
Pretty much this. First of all, I can't communicate with them. Assuming I can learn to speak to them, any half assed explanations I can offer to them would just be laughed off anyway.
For the sake of argument, disregard the problem of learning their language.

nothing that wouldn't earn me a trip to the inquisition gallows, such as "magically curing fevers"
so innawoods it is
Beautiful names like
>Constantinople
>Byzantium
and then
>Instanbul
WHY?
>>371194
>implying Istanbul isn't a 10/10 name
The rest of the Turkish cities have turboshit names but Istanbul is fucking respectable.
>>371205
I dunno family I'm a sucker for all those accented letters everywhere, it was a pretty nice way of "westernizing" their language.
>>371205
It just means "Inner city".
It's lazy as fuck.
Plus it's historically nothing.
Byzantium and Constantinople are noble names.
How do the different Abrahamic faiths (especially Christianity sects) feel about killing?
>>371055
Murder is wrong. Killing within the bounds of law (war and punishment) is acceptable.
>>371060
Hypocrisy.
>>371085
Care to elaborate?
Religious people of /his/ : Do you proselytise?
If so, why? And how successful is it?
If not, why not?
>>371001
Orthodox Jew reporting in.
No, I don't proselytize. It's not our way, and it's just rude. If someone looks, is searching for God, I'll give my 2 cents, but to go banging on people's doors is counterproductive, and as often as not when it "works", you get shallow and superficial converts, not people who are in it to learn and understand.
>>371001
Longtime baptist son of a fuck reporting in.
Because of where I live, in the Northeast of the US, proselytizing is actually pretty hard. The local politics are super fucking partisan and religion gets lumped in with conservatives all the time up here, so public displays of faith are usually met with some ignorant comment about how I probably wanna lynch gays. Or they're catholic and I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Just having faith these days can call people to judge you, so I am not gonna go through...

How do I get back into the good graces of the Church lads?
I spent many years as an edge-lord, rejecting my faith, committing informal apostasy, worshipping other gods and demons (mostly as a joke) and just in general thinking I was better than my heritage and upbringing. Is confession enough to atone for this? How do I confess to being a fedora tipper for the better part of the last decade?
Also, discuss being a Catholic. No Orthodox funposting pls
>>370907
Pic related, we always find our sins to be unforgivable, but God died to atone for them. Confess your sins, hold nothing back and be unbound from the chains of edgelording sin.
Welcome home brother.
>>370907
Fun fact: Catholics are allowed to enter confession with a registered man of the Catholic Church. If that really is what you need to begin your transition back into the Faith, then do so. You could also do a quick google search for Catholic organizations in your area. Shelters, monasteries, soup kitchens, etc. Give them some of your money and time. Make friends with some of the other Church going people. Hell, they might just be faithful people who don't go to church.
I would not gauge your worth or devotion...

Apologize with your heart, accept your penance like a man and from that day forward do better. Catholicism is a religion of WORKS not faith. being a "believer" or "filled with faith" or any of that other protestant nonsense isnt enough.
Again, your life and works will be the embodiment of your soul in action. Remember that.
